听力原文: (32) County fairs are a tradition in New England towns. They offer great entertainment. One popular event is the pie-eating contest. If you want to take part in the contest, it is a good idea to remember these guidelines: (33) first, make sure your stomach is nearly empty of food. Eating a whole pie can be hard if you have just finished a meal. Next, it is helpful to like the pie you are going to eat. The cream types are a good choice. They slide down the throat more easily. Placing your hands in the right position adds to the chances of winning. There is a temptation to reach out and help the eating process. This will result in becoming disqualified. (34) Don't just sit on your hands, if your hands are tied behind your back, you will not be tempted to make use of them.

Now you are ready to show your talent at eating pies. The object, of course, is to get the bottom of the pie plate before the other people. (35) It is usually better to start at the outside and work toward the middle. This method gives you a goal to focus on. Try not to notice what the other people near you are doing. Let the cheers from the crowd spur you on. But don't look up. All you should think about is eating that pie.

听力原文: From this lookout we enjoy one of the most spectacular views of San Francisco. A
s you can see, the city rests on a series of hills varying in altitude from sea level to 938 feet. The first permanent settlement was made at this site in 1776. For 13 years the village had fewer than one hundred inhabitants. But in 1848, with the discovery of gold, the population grew to ten thousand. The same year the name was changed from Yerba Buea to San Francisco.

By 1862 telegraph communications linked San Francisco with eastern cities, and by 1869 the first transcontinental railroad connected the Pacific coast with the Atlantic seaboard. Today San Francisco has a population of almost three million. It is the financial center of the west, and serves as the terminus for trans-Pacific steamship lines and air traffic. The port of San Francisco, which is almost 18 miles long with 42 piers, handles between five and six million tons of cargo annually.

And now, if you will look to your right, you should just be able to see the east section of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge, which is more than one mile long, spans the harbor from San Francisco to Marin County and the Red Wood Highway. It was completed in 1937 at a cost of 32 million dollars and is still one of the largest suspension bridges in the world.

(30)

A.Gold was discovered.

B.The transcontinental railroad was completed.

C.The Golden Gate Bridge was constructed.

D.Telegraph communications were established with the East.

听力原文: New York City is the largest city in the United States. Unlike most American cities, which make up only a part of a particular county, New York City is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs. They are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan, or New York County, is the smallest of the five boroughs, covering an area of 59.5 sq km (23 sq mi). It is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Among the more famous of these are the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Citicorp Center. The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center were also among New York's famous skyscrapers until they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.

Manhattan is the center of New York's cultural life. Numerous stage and motion picture theaters are located around Broadway in Midtown, which includes Times Square. The borough is the home of prominent music and dance organizations, such as the New York City Opera Company, the Metropolitan Opera Association, American Bailer Theatre, and the New York City Ballet.

In 1945, the United States Congress invited the United Nations to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. Completed in 1952, the UN complex sits in Manhattan, alongside the East River, in the city of New York.

A.Three.

B.Four.

C.Five.

D.Six
