In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery”--feeling important and wo
rthwhile--and the sources of what we call a sense of “pleasure”--finding life enjoyable--are not always identical. Women often are told “You can't have it all. ” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is: “You chose a career, so you can't expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life. “or” You have a wonderful husband and children--what's all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand develop both aspects of well--being, if they are to feel good about themselves.

Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two dimensions. One is mastery, which includes self-esteem (自尊), a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression. Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity. Pleasure is the other dimension, and it is composed of happiness, satisfaction and optimism (乐观)。 It is tied could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa. For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.

The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and remedy past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being. But we know that both mastery and pleasure are critical. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work. In our study, all the groups of employed women rated significantly higher in mastery than did women who not employed.

A woman's well-being is enhanced (增进) when she takes on multiple roles. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles--marriages, motherhood, and employment —— were the highest in well-being, despite warnings about stress and strain.

It can be inferred form. the first paragraph that _______.

A.for women a sense of “mastery” is more important than a sense of "pleasure"

B.for women a sense of “pleasure” is more important than a sense of "mastery"

C.women can't have a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” at the same time

D.a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” are both indispensable to women

第10题

Since pleasure is the first good and natural to us, for this very reason we do not choose
every pleasure, but sometimes we pass over many pleasures, when greater discomfort accrues to us as the result of them; and similarly we think many pains better than pleasures, since a greater pleasure comes to us when we have endured pains for a long time. Every pleasure then because of its natural kinship to us is good, yet not every pleasure is to be chosen; even as every pain is also an evil, yet not all are always of a nature to be avoided. Yet by a scale of comparison and by the consideration of advantages and disadvantages we must form. our judgement on all these matters. For the good on certain occasions we treat as bad, and conversely the bad as good.

We must consider that of desires some are natural, others vain, and of the natural some are necessary and others merely natural; and of the necessary some are necessary for happiness, others for the repose of the body, and others for very life.

Unhappiness comes either through fear or through vain and unbridled desire; but if a man curbs these, he can win for himself' the blessedness of understanding. Of desires, all that do not lead to a sense of pain, if they are not satisfied, are not necessary, but involve a craving which is easily dispelled, when the object is hard to procure or they seem likely to produce harm. Wherever in the case of desires which are natural, but do not lead to a sense of pain, if they are not fulfilled, the effort is intense, such pleasures are due to idle imagination, and it is not owing to their own nature that they fail to be dispelled, but owing to the empty imaginings of the man.

The disturbance of the soul cannot be ended nor true joy created either by the possession of the greatest wealth or by honour and respect in the eyes of the mob or by anything else that is associated with causes of unlimited desires. We must not violate nature, but obey her; and we shah obey her if we fulfil the necessary desires and also the natural, if they bring no harm to us, but sternly reject the harmful. The man who follows nature and not vain opinions is independent in all things. For in reference to unlimited desires even the greatest wealth is not riches but poverty.

Insofar as you are in difficulties, it is because you forget nature; for you create for yourself unlimited fears and desires. It is better for you to be free of fear lying upon a pallet, than to have a golden couch and a rich table and be full of trouble.

What does "greater discomfort accrues to us" in Paragraph 1 mean here?

A.We get greater discomfort over a period of time.

B.We are tortured by greater discomfort.

C.Greater discomfort exists in our body.

D.Greater discomfort makes us miserable.

第11题

When we think about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, a peak of grea
t delight--and those peaks seem to get rarer the older we get.

For a child, happiness has a magical quality. I remember making hide-outs in newly cut hay, playing cops and robbers in the woods, getting a speaking part in the school play. Of course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at such peaks of pleasure as winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved.

For teenagers, or people under twenty, the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love, and popularity. I can still feel the agony of not being invited to a party that almost everyone else was going to. But I also recall the great happiness of being invited at another event to dance with a very handsome young man.

In adulthood the things that bring great joy--birth, love, marriage--also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. Love may not last, sex isn't always good, loved ones die. For adults, happiness is complicated.

My dictionary explains happy as "lucky" or "fortunate", but I think a better explanation of happiness is "the capacity for enjoyment". The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to love where we please, even good health. Nowadays, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, we have turned happiness into one more thing we "gotta have". We're so self-conscious about our "right" to it that it's making us extremely unhappy. So we chase it and consider it to be the same as wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren't necessarily happier.

While happiness may be more complex for us, the solution is the same as ever. Happiness isn't about what happens to us--it's about how we perceive what happens to us. It's the ability to find a positive for every negative, and view a setback as a challenge. It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.

According to the author, happiness lies in the ability to ______.

A.think of something extraordinary

B.experience delight at an old age

C.feel the magic quality of pleasure

D.enjoy what one has at the moment
