Mobile Phone Manners
Mobile phones have changed the way we communicate (交流); they have also brought about problems in phone manners (礼仪). Gaik Lim, a Singapore-based advisor, has some advice on phone manners.
When dealing with missed calls, the person being called should return the call. "Calls should be returned as soon as possible, and no later than the following day. Anything later than that, and an apology or a reason for the delay should go with the call. "
Text messages should be kept short and to the point. If they go beyond four or five lines, call or e-mail instead. " The use of short forms should be among family members and friends, never in a business situation. "
Speak in a low voice as if you were talking to someone next to you. If the connection is bad, don't raise your voice in order to be heard, simply move to another place where the connection may be better. And if that doesn't work, tell the caller to call you back or offer to call at a later time.
When a conversation is cut off due to a bad connection, the person who started the conversation should call back. "It may be inconvenient for the other person to return the call, especially if it's an unlisted number, or an overseas call. "
When running late for a date or meeting, it is acceptable to text to inform. that you'll be delayed. Messages should be apologetic. "A message like ' Sorry. Will be about 30 minutes late due to flight delay' is considered polite and thoughtful. "
Taking calls during meetings is only acceptable if you have informed the chairperson that you are expecting an urgent (紧急的) call. If you get an unexpected but urgent call, apologize to those present and offer a quick explanation as to why you have to take that call. Then leave the room to continue your phone conversation.
What should one do if he has missed a call?
A.Text a. apology to the caller.
B.Call back if it is from abroad.
C.Wait till the caller calls again.
D.Return the call as early as one can.

Geography and Movement
To understand how astrology works, we should first take a quick look at the sky. Although the stars are at enormous distances, they do indeed give the impression of being affixed to the inner surface of a great hollow sphere surrounding the earth. Ancient people, in fact, literally believed in the existence of such a celestial sphere. As the earth spins on its axis, the celestial sphere appears to turn about us each day, pivoting at points on a line with the earth’s axis of rotation. This daily turning of the sphere carries the stars around the sky, causing most of them to rise and set, but they, and constellations they define, maintains fixed patterns on the sphere, just as the continent of Australian maintains its shape on a spinning globe of the earth. Thus the stars were called fixed stars.
The motion of the sun along the ecliptic is, of course, merely a reflection of the revolution of the earth around the sun, but the ancients believed the earth was fixed and the sun had and independent motion of its own, eastward among the stars. The glare of sunlight hides the stars in daytime, but the ancients were aware that the stars were up there even at night, and the slow eastward motion of the sun around the sky, at the rate of about thirty degrees each month, caused different stars to be visible at night at different times of the year.
The moon, revolving around the earth each month, also has an independent motion in the sky. The moon, however, changes it position relatively rapidly. Although it appears to rise and set each day, as does nearly everything else in the sky, we can see the moon changing position during as short an interval as an hour or so. The moon’s path around the earth lies nearly in the same plane as the earth’s path around the sun, so the moon is never seen very far from the ecliptic in the sky. There are five other objects visible to the naked eye that also appear to move in respect to the fixed background of stars on the celestial sphere. These are the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and the Saturn. All of them revolve around the sun in nearly the same plane as the earth does, so they, like the moon, always appear near the ecliptic. Because we see the planets from the moving earth, however, they behave in a complicated way, with their apparent motions on the celestial sphere reflecting both their own independent motions around the sun and our motion as well.
The ancient people believed that______.
A.the earth was spinning on the axis of the sky
B.the sky was a hollow sphere spinning around the earth
C.the patterns of stars on the sky would never change
D.the stars around the sky were not stationary

听力原文: Air travel is such an everyday experience these days. We are not surprised when we read about a politician having talks with the Japanese Prime Minister one day, attending a conference in Australia the following morning and having to be off at midday to sign a trade agreement in Bangkok. But frequent long-distance flying can be very tiring. The traveler begins to feel his brain is in one country, his digestion in another and his powers of concentration nowhere. In short, he hardly knows where he is.
The fatigue we normally experience after a long journey is more intensely felt when we fly from east to west or the other way round because we cross time zones. Air travel is so quick nowadays that we can leave London after breakfast and be in New York in eight hours, yet what really disturbs us most is that when we arrive it is only lunch time but we have already had lunch on the plane and are expecting dinner.
Doctors say that since air travelers are in no condition to work after crossing a number of time zones, they should go straight to bed on arrival. Airline pilots, in fact, whose experience is so obviously relevant that it ought to serve as a guide, often live by their own watches ignoring local time, and have breakfast at midnight if necessary. The less reason to worry about their health is because they are used to flying and are physically fit.
