听力原文: In ancient times, many people believed tile earth was a flat disc. Well over 2,000 years ago, rite ancient Greek philosophers were able to put forward two good arguments proving that it was not. Direct observations of heavenly bodies was the basis of both these arguments. First, the Greeks knew that during eclipses of the moon, file earth was between the sun and the moon, and they saw that during these eclipses, the earth's shadow on the moon was always round, they realized that this could be true only if the earth was spherical. If tile earth were a flat disc, then its shadow during eclipses would not be a perfect circle, it would be stretched out into a long ellipse. Tile second argument was based on what the Greeks saw during their travels. They noticed that the North Star, or Polaris, appeared lower in the sky when they traveled south, in more northern regions, the North Star appeared to them to be much higher in file sky. By the way, it was also from this difference in the apparent position of the North Star that the Greeks first calculated the approximate distance around the circumference of the earth, a figure recorded in ancient documents says 400,000 stadia, that's the plural of the word stadium. Today, it's not known exactly what length one stadium represents, but let's say, it was about 200 meters, the length of many athletic stadiums. This would hake the Greek' s estimate about twice the figure accepted today, a very good estimate for those writing so long before even the first telescope was invented.

B.How ancient philosophers explained the cause of an eclipse of the Moon.
C.Why ancient philosophers thought the Earth was a sphere.
D.Why ancient philosophers thought the Earth moved around the Sun.

听力原文: The story of silk is a fascinating one. About 4,000 years ago the Chinese discovered the secret of the cocoon. No one knows exactly how or when this was made. One story says that a young princess was drinking tea in her garden and watching the silkworm spin cocoon. By chance one dropped into her tea, and the hot liquid softened it. When the girl tried to take the cocoon out of her tea. She pulled out a long silk thread.
The Chinese learned to weave the silk thread into cloth. For 2,000 years they were the only people who knew how to make silk. The Chinese merchants sold silk cloth throughout Asia and Europe and became rich. Silk was so expensive that it was called "the cloth of the Kings". Everyone wanted to learn how to make silk, but the Chinese kept the secret carefully guarded. Finally the secret was stolen. In the sixth century, two monks learned about the silk worms and their cocoons. They spent several years in China and finally found a way to take some worm eggs out of the country. The monks also carried bamboo canes. One day they hid some eggs in the hollow canes, and walked out of China with them. It is said that the development of the silk industry in other countries came from those few eggs which the monks had carried out of China.

听力原文: We can read of things that happened 5000 years ago in the Near East, where people first learned to write. But there are some parts of the word where even now people cannot write. The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas—legends handed down from one generation to another. (29)These legends are useful because they can tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could write down what they did.
(30) Anthropologists wondered where the remote ancestors of the Polynesian people now living in the Pacific Islands came from. The sagas of these people explain that some of them came from Indonesia about 2000 years ago.
But the first people who were like ourselves lived so long ago that even their sagas, if they had any, are forgotten. So archaeologists have neither history nor legends to help them to find out where the first 'modern men' came from.
(31) Fortunately, however, ancient men made tools of stone, especially flint, because this is easier to shape than other kinds. They may also have used wood and skins, but these have rotted away. (31)Stone does not decay, and so the tools of long ago have remained when even the bones of the men who made them have disappeared without trace.
(30)
A.They moved from one place to another.
B.They came from Indonesia.
C.They have left us information about their migrations.
D.They preserved their sagas and legends.
