第2题

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were
going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard (柜橱) outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow."Buy it, "my wife said at once."We'll carry it home on the roof rack.I've always wanted one like that."

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the roof rack. It was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.

In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said,"There's a long line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake, I wonder?" In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.

"Right, sir, "he said. "Do you need any more help?"

I was a bit puzzled. "Thanks, officer, "I said. "You have been very kind. I live just on the road."

He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. "Well, well, "he said, laughing. "It's a cupboard you've got there! We thought it was something else."

My wife began to laugh. The truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. "Yes, it's a cupboard, but thanks again."I drove home as fast as I could.

In fact the husband _______ the cupboard.

A.would like very much to buy

B.badly wanted

C.was glad to have bought

D.would rather not have bought

Passage Two:Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.“Congratulations, Mr. Jo
nes, it’s a girl.”

Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different response from every man who hears these words. Some feel pride when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good father. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy (怀孕) was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.

Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this resocialization process. Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only recently has literature focused on the role of a father.

It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father’s role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother’s role. The mother’s role seems to require a complete transformation in daily routine (生活规律) and highly innovative (创新的) adaptation, on the other hand, the father’s role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing numbers of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.

第26题:According to the author, being a father ________.

A) brings a feeling of excitement to some men

B) has a different meaning for those who have daughters

C) makes some men feel proud and others uneasy

D) means nothing but more responsibilities

第4题

Some futurologists have assumed that the vast upsurge of women in the workforce may porten
d a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The converse of this concern is that the prospects of becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to putting off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy comes to life, the number of marriages also rises.

The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife's work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible (似是而非的). Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. By raising a family's standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family's financial and emotional stability.

Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union.

Also, a major part of women's inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.

The word "portend" in the first sentence of the passage is closest in meaning to"______".

A.signal

B.defy

C.suffer from

D.result from

听力原文:David Smith and his wife went to the Isle of Wight for their summer holiday. But
they were by no means pleased with their hotel. As soon as they returned home, David decided to write to the manager of the travel agency.

David: Can you spare a moment, dear? I want you to listen to this letter.

Sally: Go ahead, then.

David: Dear Sir, my wife and I arrived home last night after a holiday arranged by your firm, in

Jersey. We stayed at the hotel described in your brochure as a comfortable, medium-sized hotel, with a magnificent view of the sea, offering courteous, old fashioned service and excellent food, served in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Sally: Yes, that's what the brochure said.

David: In fact the hotel is situated at least half a mile from the sea. Our room overlooked a car park...

Sally: Through the gates of which motor vehicles were constantly arriving or departing.

David: Yes, that's good. The food was strictly beef-burgers and chips or fish and chips. Wine was available, but at exorbitant prices, and as for the courteous, old-fashioned service, the majority of the staff were foreign and virtually incapable of speaking or understanding the English language.

Sally: Yes, that's quite true.

David: In addition to this, we were most unhappy with the arrangements for our journey home. We were instructed to catch the 11:00 am ferry...

Sally: Wasn't it 12:00?

David: No, 11:00... but this was apparently delayed and we did not get away till 6 o'clock in the evening. Now that our holiday is over, it seems fairly pointless writing this letter, but I should like you to know that we were most disappointed with the hotel and travel arrangements and shall certainly not be booking any futurc holidays through yours. Yours faithfully, David Smith.

Sally: Yes dear, that' s a very good letter.

What did Mr. Smith decide to do when they returned home?

A.He decided to go to the travel agency for complaints.

B.He wrote to the manager of the agency.

C.He'd like to consult with his wife for complaints.

D.He did nothing but complain with his wife.

Concerningmoneyoranythingelse,conflictsbetweenhusbandandwifeusuallyreflectapowerstrugg

Concerningmoney or anything else, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect a power struggle. Conflicts between parent and child often center around the same issue. As children enter adolescence, they begin to demand greater freedom to go where they please, do what they please, and make decisions without parental interference. Many American parents do not know how to deal with their teenagers and seek advice from books, lectures, and parent training courses. Parents want to maintain a friendly relationship with their teenagers and also want to guide them so that their behavior will be whatever the parents consider proper and constructive.

But in a society of rapidly changing social and moral values, parents and children often disagree about what is important and what is right.

(77)Arguments may concern such unimportant matters as styles of dress or hairdos. But quarrels may also concern school work, after school jobs, decisions, use of the family car, dating, and sex behavior. Some families have serious problems with teenagers who drop out of school, run away from home, or use illegal drugs. Because so much publicity is given to the problem teenager, one gets the impression that all teenagers are troublemakers. Actually, relatively few adolescents do anything wrong, and nearly all grow up into “solid citizens” who fulfill most of their parents’ expectations. In fact, recent studies show that the “generation gap” is narrowing. The vast majority of teenagers share most of their parents, values and ideas. Many parents feel that they get along with their adolescents quite well.

According to the writer, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect ________.

A.feeling of hatred

B.power struggle

C.that they don't care for each other

D.that they may appeal to divorce
