听力原文: Despite the fact that healthy eating has more publicity than ever before, the sales of chocolate continue to rise.

But why do we like it so much? It's not enough to answer: "Because it tastes nice." So do other foods. But do you know any other food which some people have to keep closed until their guests arrive? They know that if they open the chocolate on their own, they'll probably go on eating until they feel slightly ill. And it isn't just the sugar that people like. In the 17th century, when chocolate first arrived here as a drink, people did not put sugar in it because sugar was too expensive.

"Comfort" is a good word to explain why chocolate is more than just another food. It makes people feel safe.

"After a busy day, I like to sit and listen to the radio with a cup of tea and a bar of chocolate."

One answer is that, like coffee, cola and tea, chocolate contains the stimulants. This could explain why it is so difficult to stop eating chocolate once you've started. Some people even fear that they won't be able to atop, and this makes them literally afraid of chocolate.

(33)

A.Because it is better than other foods.

B.Because it tastes good.

C.Because it provides comfort and pleasure.

D.Because it serves as a special food for guests.

听力原文: W: I'm not surprised that factory workers want shorter hours. How would you like to be panels or turn screws hours after hours everyday.

M: I wouldn't. I'd get bored. And I think only of my weekly wage packet.

W: So naturally, our workers are always on strike. They are bored and they want more money to spend in spare time.

M: No. What worries me is that there is far too many unnecessary disagreements between workers, trade unions and managements. We haven't yet learned to work together-as a team.

W: Is that why so many of our industries are dying?

M: What do you mean so many of our industries and what do you mean by dying?

W: That's the word you used the other day about coal mining and cotton textile industry.

M: Why do people get so upset about these industries? I suppose it's because it used to be our pride and strength. Well, there aren't any more as far as I'm concerned, the sooner people realize it, the better. Then all the money, labor and technical skills wasted on them could be put into the spending of other industries like electronics, motor cars, IT industry, and even some industry like tourism.

W: What about industries in other European countries? Haven't they got the same sort of problems.

M: Yes, hut they had more practice at fighting for markets. That's why I'm in favor of Britain being a member of Euro Zone. Industry inside of the Euro Zone are forced to take notice of their competitors.

W: Don't you feel hopeless about the future?

M: Of course, I don't. We are very invented and innovated people and we have plenty of skilled and professional workers. Besides, we still have reputation for honesty and fair dealing in business.

W: How nice to hear you boast, Charlie. The English think it's in bad taste to boast, don't they? When foreigners ask you how are things, and you answer "not bad". How they are to know "not bad" often means first class, thank you.

(47)

A.They are bored.

B.They want a wage increase.

C.They demand shorter hours.

D.They like to beat their rivals.

听力原文:W: Hi, Li Hua. What are you doing this semester?

M: Oh, I'm still learning English. I have to do one more semester before I can start my real studies at the university.

W: You make it sound like prison. How are the classes?

M: They're all right, I guess. I don't know. It seems like they never tell us what we really need to know.

W: What do you mean?

M: Look, when I study mathematics, for instance, we start with definitions. Then we have problems and some equations and processes to learn. You go to class, you keep up, you do the homework, and you know it. You pass exams. But English class is quite different. First of all, they don't want to teach us all the rules. They tell us one rule. Fine. We use that rule, but soon it won't work. It's more complicated or there are a lot of exceptions or something. Sometimes I think the teachers don't know the rules either.

W: But you don't learn a language from the rules, anyway. You have to use it.

M: Yes. That's something else they tell us. But why can't we just go to class, study, and do our homework? That's what I know how to do.

W: Look at this way, can you learn to play soccer by sitting at home and reading about soccer?

M: No, of course not. Not if you want to play well.

W: But why not? You could understand the rules of strategy, the duties of each position, and all the special situations. You have to feel the ball, practice kicking it hundreds of times, practice running down the field, moving toward the goal, and centering the ball. No one can learn that by passively studying. Learning a language is more like learning to play soccer than learning mathematics. You have to ask a lot of questions and hear how the answers sound. You have to listen to how people indicate the important part of what they're saying. And then of course endless practice on all the details spelling, "s" endings, articles.., just like practice in simple dribbling and kicking.

M: But if it's a skill like soccer, not a science, why do they teach it in schools and universities, and give you diplomas and grades?

W: That's a good question. It is confusing, but languages are important and people do want to learn them. But the main thing is to practice the language a lot, just like soccer.

M: Maybe I'll join a soccer team and practice English and soccer at the same time. I can talk with people before and after the practice.

W: That's a good idea.

(26)

A.The rules in English language.

B.Learning English and mathematics.

C.The approach to learning English.

D.Playing Soccer needs a lot of exercise.
