The United States National Weather Service says that the huge winter storm has dumped some 68.3 centimeters of snow in Central Park, making it the worst blizzard to hit New York City since records began in 1869. To add to the problems facing the entire north-eastern seaboard, winds across the region have been gusting at up to 96 kilometers an hour, causing serious localized drifting. The road network in many places then is impassable. Most of the airports in the region have been closed, with hundreds of flights cancelled.

In one very long sentence, the introduction to the U. N. Charter expresses the ideals and
the common aims of all the people whose governments joined together to form. the U. N.

"We the people of the U. N. determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war which twice in our lifetime has brought untold suffering to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations, large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom, and for these ends, to practise tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and to employ international machinery for the promotion of economic and social advancement of all peoples, have resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims."

The name "United Nations" is accredited to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the first group of representatives of member states met and signed a declaration of common intent on New Year's Day in 1942. Representatives of five powers worked together to draw up proposals, completed at Dumbarton Oaks in 1944. These proposals, modified after deliberation at the conference on International Organization in San Francisco which began in April 1945, were finally agreed on and signed as the U. N. charter by 50 countries on 26 June 1945. Poland, not represented at the conference, signed the Charter later and was added to the list of original members. It was not until that autumn, however, after the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the U. S. S. R. U., the U. K. and the U.S. and by a majority of the other participants that the U. N. officially came into existence. The date was 24 October, now universally celebrated as United Nations Day.

The essential functions of the U. N. are to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to cooperate internationally in solving international economic, social, cultural and human problems, promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and to be a centre for co-ordinating the actions of nations on attaining these common ends.

No country takes precedence over another in the U.N. Each member's rights and obligations are the same. All must contribute to the peaceful settlement of international dispute, and members have pledged to refrain from the threat or use of force against other states.

Under its Charter, the first stated aim of the U.N. was ______.

A.to promote social progress

B.to prevent a third world war

C.to revise international laws

D.to maintain international peace

听力原文: One winter day in 1891 a class at a training school in Massachusetts U. S. A. , went into the gym for their daily exercises. Since the football season had ended, most of the young men felt they were in for a boring time. But their teacher, James Nesmith had other ideas. He had been working for a long time on a new game that would have the excitement of American football. Nesmith showed the men a basket he had hung at each end of the gym and explained that they were going to use a round European football. At first everybody tried to throw the ball into the basket no matter where he was standing. "Pass! Pass!" Nesmith kept shouting, blowing his whistle to stop the excited players. Slowly they began to understand what was wanted of them.

The problem with the new game, which was soon called basketball, was getting the ball out of the basket. They used ordinary food baskets with bottoms and the ball of course stayed inside. At first someone had to climb up every time a basket was scored. It was several years before someone came up with the idea of removing the bottom of the basket and letting the ball fall through. There have been many changes in the rules since then and basketball has become one of the world's most popular sports.

(34)

A.He took them to watch a basketball game.

B.He trained them to play European football.

C.He let them compete in getting balls out of a basket.

Yet, ff privacy is the true currency of the Interuet, as many argue, millions of us are doing that very thing every day. i Meanwhile, Internet giants amend their privacy policies in ways that allow them to harvest and sell even more of our personal data. While privacy campaigners protest, users generally vote with their clicks and carry on regardless. So should we conclude the Interuet generation is happy to trade its privacy for free or cheaper Web services? Not according to Nicola Jentzsch of the German Institute of Research in Berlin, and colleagues, who last week published research showing that most people prefer to protect their personal data when given a choice and that a significant proportion are willing to pay extra to do so. The researchers directed 443 students to a website offering tickets for a real movie showing, sold by two different uendors (商贩). Although the tickets were subsidized, the volunteers, who were able to purchase one, two, or no tickets, had to pay most of the cost themselves. When both vendors offered tickeks at the same price but only one required customers to enter their cell phone number, the more privacy-friendly yendor got 83% of sales. When participants were offered the santo choice, but with an additional charge of 50 euro cents from the privacy-friendly cinema, its market share fell to 31%. "It turns out that when you are good on privacy you can charge more and make a greater profit," says Alessandro Acquisti of the University of Cambridge, one of the authors of the study, published by the European Network and Information Security Agency. "What people say in surveys is that they care about privacy, but what they actually do is spend their time constantly updating their status on Facebo0k," says Acquisti. "This has led some to conclude that people no longer care about privacy. This new data, along with similar work we have done in the U. DAVOS, Switzerland—A year ago, at the Davos World Economic Forum, I saw elephants fly. Yes
, sir, right here in the Swiss Alps I saw big ideas defying gravity. At this year's Davos forum, though, all the elephants came crashing down. Turns out elephants can't fly after all—and the world is a better place for it.

Since Davos gathers together a sample of global leaders, business executives and social activists, it's a good place to take the world's pulse. Last year's Davos was dominated by three big ideas. The first was put forth by Bush officials that the U. S. not only was ready to invade Iraq largely on its own, but could also pull off regime change there without the help of either the U. N. or major al- lies—France, Germany and Russia.

This year, Vice President Dick Cheney, who, more than any Bush official resisted cooperation with the U.N. in the Iraq war, made a firm, low-key defense of the U. S. policy. But alter Mr. Cheney spoke, a senior administration official privately told reporters that the Bush team was ready to give the U.N. pretty much whatever authority it wanted to help oversee Iraq's transition to elections—and the only thing standing in the way was whether the U. N. would assume the risks. It turns out that while there is no regime in the world the U.S. can't destroy on its own, there is also none that it can rebuild on its own.

Last year, France was indulging its illusion that it could galvanize all the antiwar, anti-U. S. sentiment to make itself the great global Uncola to America's Coca-Cola—the new balancer to America. It would be a win—win for President Jacques Chirac. He would enhance his political stature at home by opposing America and make France the supreme power in Europe, marginalizing Britain.

A year later, France was not only unable to stop the war, but it paid a big price in Europe. It turned out to be a lose—lose for France, remarked Peter Schwartz, head of the Global Business Net- work. By going to such lengths to oppose the U. S. , and by denouncing those Europeans who sided with America, France drove pro-U. S. Europeans, like Poland and Spain, deeper into the U. S. camp, noted Mr. Schwartz. This, in turn, gave Poland and Spain more backbone to resist German and French demands for greater control over E. U. affairs.

The author write this passage mainly to______.

A.bring up some interesting facts.

B.criticize some irresponsible words.

C.introduce some political figures.

D.point out the future of the world's political situation.

A. Cablevision Extends $ 90 Triple-Service Promotion

Persuaded by popular demand, Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC) is extending a promotional offer that combines cable TV, Internet and phone service for $ 90 a month. First launched in mid-June, the offer was originally slated to end July 31 but was pushed out to mid-August. Now it seems the company wants hold on to the offer still longer. The Bethpage, N. Y., company hasn't specified when the promotion will end. During a quarterly conference call last week, Chief Operating Officer Tom Rutledge said simply that the company was continuing to advertise the offer based on its early success. Rutledge also said promotional offers "will continue to play a key role in both building new customer relationships and expanding existing ones."

B. McDonald' s CEO has new surgery

The chief executive of McDonald's Corp. is recuperating after another surgery, the world's largest fast-food company said Saturday. Charlie Bell underwent a procedure Friday to correct a blockage caused by scar tissue build-up from colorectal surgery he had in May, the company said. "I am delighted to report that The procedure was a complete success and that Charlie is resting comfortably," said Andrew McKenna, chairman of Chicago area-based McDonald's. "During Charlie's brief recuperation period... there is absolutely no change in the leadership of the company," McKenna said in a statement. Bell, previously chief operating officer of the global fast-food giant, became CEO after the unexpected death in April of former CEO Jim Cantalupo at a meeting in Florida.

C. Google governance flawed

Google Inc. ranks lower in corporate governance than any company in the Standard Poor's 500 stock index, according to influential proxy adviser Institutional Shareholder Services, said a newspaper report published Monday. ISS, which advises shareholders on how to vote, found 21 weaknesses in the governance practices of Mountain View, Calif.- based Google, which is expected to join the S&P 500, said the Financial Times. These flaws, it said, include a dual-class capital structure that gives effective control to insiders, too few outside directors and a lack of stock ownership guidelines for executives and independent directors. The adviser also found problematic of the company's compensation plan that lets Google reprice stock options if the stock price falls, as well as loans to company insiders.

D. US Airways talks with pilots collapse

Negotiations between US Airways and its pilots union over a new round of steep concessions collapsed on Monday, heightening pressure on the carrier as it tries to avert insolvency. Jack Stephan, a spokesman for the company's chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, said more than a week of discussions between the two sides at the airline's Arlington, Va. , headquarters yielded little progress. "Since the beginning of these talks, we have witnessed a disturbing trend by the company to seemingly dismiss several significant proposals from our pilot negotiators," Stephan said. "Instead, management has responded by 'piling on' additional demands to their counterproposals."

E. Mylan wins OK for generic Zoloft

Shares of Mylan Laboratories Inc. rose Monday after U. S. regulators gave tentative marketing approval to the company's generic forms of popular depression and allergy drugs sold by Pfizer Inc. Mylan said the Food and Drug Administration had granted tentative approval to its forms of Pfizer's Zoloft, or sertraline, anti-depressant, and Zyrtec, or cetirizine, allergy pill. But Mylan will not be allowed to sell the copycats for several years until Pfizer's patents on the medicines expire. Zoloft and Zyrtec are among Pfizer's biggest products, with global 2003 sales of $ 3.12 billion for Zoloft, and $1.34 billion, for Zyrtec.

The company is benefiting from its promotion.
