Under normal conditions the act of communication requires the presence of at least two per
sons: one who sends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs or symbols which mean the same to the sender and the receiver.

The means of sending communications are too numerous and varied for a systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touch play the most important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of signs and symbols.

Examples of visual communication are gesture and mimicry. Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight such as those used by deaf and dumb persons. Another means of communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, of flashing lights. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of hand stroking has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling to someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as a receiver. The most fully developed form. of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken language.

The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a short time, and the person involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore all are restricted in time and space.

Why does the author begin his analysis with the means of receiving communication rather than the means of sending communication?

A.Communication actually takes place when the message is received.

B.There are more means of receiving than of sending communications.

C.Reception of communications involves of the senses.

D.It is difficult to organize by type the means of sending communications.

根据短文回答 16~22 题。

Friendship

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted,we often don't clearly understand how we make fiends. While we get on well with a number of people,we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average among students is about 6 per person Moreover, a great many relationships come under the blanket term"friendship".In all cases, two people like each other and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their mutual interest vary enormously.

Initially, much depends on how people meet.and on favorable first impressions. As we get to know people,we take into account things like age, race, physical attractiveness, economic and social status, and intelligence.Although these factors are not of prime importance,it is more difficult to relate to people when there is a marked difference in age and background.

On a more immediate level,we are sensitive to actual behaviors, facial expression, and tone of voice,Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time Looking at each other than mere acquaintances.Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness。and it is because they may transmit the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty in making friends.A friendly gaze with the wrong facial expression can turn into an aggress we stare, and nervousness may be misread as hostility.People who do not

look one In the eye are mistrusted when,in fact。they simply lack confidence.

Some relationships thrive on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs,to have attitudes and interests in common—the, often talk about" being on the same wavelength".It generally takes time to reach this point;sometimes people。click" immediately. The more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another.People want to do friends favors and hate to let them down.Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put-up with irritating habits, and to tolerate differences of opinion.Imagine going camping with someone you occasionally meet for a drink!

In contrast with marriage.there are no friendship ceremonies,no rituals to strengthen the association between two people. But the mutual support and understanding that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling.
No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling?

If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher's interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to"play safe". He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.

I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible ! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible." It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.

Teachers differ in their opinions about ______.

A.the difficulties in teaching spelling

B.the role of spelling in general language development

C.the complexities of the basic writing skills

D.the necessity of teaching spelling
