A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men's work and his own among people that different climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.
He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.
Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.
Fall is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

A.Seasonal variations in nature.
B.How intelligence changes with the change of seasons.
C.How we can improve our intelligence.
D.Why summer is the best season for vacation.

The jewellery designer
He was young and completely unknown, but Paul Waterhouse believed in himself. He'd heard that there was going to be a large exhibition for jewellery designers and he asked the organisers whether he could show some of his work. 'I was only 21,' he says, 'and they agreed, if I could show a complete collection.' So he went to the bank, borrowed £1,500 for materials, and began to work on new designs. 'The exhibition was fantastic. Although everyone else was much more experienced than I was, my designs were still praised.'
He decided to transfer his business to Canada and began to experiment with new materials: all sorts of stones from around the world, some totally new to him. 'As most of them weren't precious, it changed the way I approached design. It was great! I was able to produce much larger pieces of modern jewellery,' he says. 'Then I was asked by an advertising agency to design a wedding ring for a TV advert. The agency liked what I'd done, but their client, a car manufacturer, wanted something a little more traditional. I was happy to make changes and that work gave me a lot of free publicity.'
At the start of his career, Paul felt confident.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say

Sally,
I just got a phone call from the Tanaka Animal Clinic, and they are willing to donate $5,000 for the fundraiser. I am also expecting a call from Lou Gibbons, who said his company would donate for the shelter as well.
Before you finish the changes to the advertisement, please put the following:
"The City Animal Shelter would like to thank the Tanaka Animal Clinic and Gibbon's Photography for the generous donation to the fundraiser."
I already mentioned that we would include their names in our advertisement in hopes it would inspire other local businesses to donate. I think this fundraiser will be a great event.
Thank you for your hard work. Please show me the ad before you send it to the newspaper.
Regards,
Bruce

听力原文: During the 19th century scientists thought that each part of our man's brain does a different job. In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain. Scientists have discovered that the way the brain works is not so simple as people may think. Chemists tell us that 100,000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember everything that happens to us. We may not be able to think back the things we've heard and seen, but it is all kept there in the storehouse of the human mind. Earlier scientists thought that power of one's brain got weaker and weaker as one grew older. But it is now thought that that is not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise it keeps its power. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain. It is now thought that the more work we give our brains, the more work they are able to do.
What did the 19th century scientists think about our brain?
A.Different part of the brain had different effect.
B.Chemical changes stopped during our sleeping;
C.There was a storehouse in the brain.
