More than 6,000 children were expulsed (开除) from U.S. schools last year for bringing guns and bombs to school, the U.S. Department of Education said on May 8.

The department gave a report to the expulsions as saying handguns accounted for 58 percent of the 6,093 expulsions in 2003-2004, against 7 percent for rifles(步枪) or shotguns and 35 percent for other types of firearms. "The report is a clear sign that our nation's public schools are cracking down(严惩) on students who bring guns to school," Education Secretary Richard Riley said in a statement. "We need to be strong-minded about keeping guns out of our schools and do everything to keep our children safe. " In March 2004, an 11 years old boy and 13 years old boy using hand-guns and rifles shot dead four children and a teacher at a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In October, two were killed and seven were wounded in a shooting at a Mississippi school. Two months later, a 14 years old boy killed three high school students and wounded five in Dasucah, Kentucky. Most of the expulsions, 56 percent, were from high schools, which have .students from about age 13. 34 percent were from junior high schools and 9 percent were from elementary schools, the report said.

Demand for Houses Still Running Ahead of Supply

A

House prices have risen again this month as demand continues to outstrip supply, according to the latest research from the property website Rightmove. co. u. k. National average asking prices asking prices rose by 2.3 per cent in September, pushing the average house price through £150,000 and setting the annual rate at 22.2 per cent.

B

"The shortage of properties coming on to the market in many areas means that it is still a seller's market, particularly in the lower and middle price brackets. This shortage and continuing demand are resulting in renewed increases in asking prices overall," Rightmove's Miles Shipside said. The findings support the latest survey from the nationwide Building Society, which showed prices rising at their highest rate since 1999, but contradict the latest Halifax survey which reported a slight slowdown in annual inflation from 20.8 to 18.8 per cent.

C

"It's an intriguing situation, with two house price indexes showing the market grinding to a halt, and two showing that the train still has a good head of steam," said John Wriglesworth, an independent housing commentator. He said that property markets should remain "well supported", thanks to "low interest rates, good affordability and low unemployment".

D

At the end of last month, nation wide said house prices surged at their fastest rate for 13 years and said it saw no sign of demand for homes weakening. The price of the average home jumped by 2.5 percent in August, for the second month in a row, to £110,890, a gain of£67 for every day of the month. Halifax contradicted that just days later, reporting that prices rose in August at their slowest rate for 10 months. It said house prices rose just 0.2 per cent, after jumping 1.8 per cent in July, bringing the annual rise down to 18.8 per cent.

It is still a seller's market.

根据下列材料,请回答题

Local Newspapers in Britain

1 Britain has a large circulation (发行量) of the national newspapers. The Daily Mirror and The Daily Express both sell about 4 million copies each day. On average, every family will buy one newspaper in the morning, and take two or three on Sundays.

2 Local newspapers are just as popular as the national ones in Britain. Local papers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Nearly every town and country area has its own paper, and almost every local paper is financially holding its own. Many local newspapers are earning good profits.

3 Local newspapers have their special characteristics. They mainly satisfy interest in local events——births, weddings, deaths, council meetings, and sports. Editors often rely on a small staff of people who know the district well. Clubs and churches in the neighborhood regularly supply these papers with much local news. Local news does not get out of date as quickly as national

news. If there is no room for it in this week"s edition, a news item can be held over until the following week.

4 The editor of a local newspaper never forgets that the success of any newspaper depends on advertising. For this reason, he is keen to keep the good will of local businessmen. If the newspaper sells well with carefully chosen news items to attract local readers, the businessmen will be grateful to the paper for the opportunity of keeping their products in the public eye.

5 Local newspapers seldom comment on problems of national importance, and editol"s rarely take sides on political questions. But they can often provide service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to improve transport, provide better shopping facilities, and preserve local monuments and places of interest.

Paragraph 2 ____________ 查看材料

A.Keeping Good Relations with Local Businessmen

B.Service Provided by Local Newspapers

C.Large Circulation of the National Newspapers

D.Special Features of Local Newspapers

E.Power of Local Newspapers

F.Popularity of local Newspapers
