A study that will cost $ 3.2 billion and last more than two decades to track the health of 100,000 U. S. children from before birth to age 21 will be launched in January, U. S. health officials said on Friday.

Officials from the U. S. government's National Institutes of Health said they hope the study, to be conducted at 105 locations throughout the United States, can help identify early-life influences that affect later development, with the goal of learning new ways to treat or prevent illness.

The study will examine hereditary and environmental factors such as exposure to certain chemicals that affect health.

Researchers will collect genetic and biological samples from people in the study as well as samples from the homes of the women and their babies including air, water, dust and materials used to construct their residences, the NIH said.

Officials said more than $ 200 million has been spent already and the study is projected to cost $ 3.2 billion.

"We anticipate that in the long term, what we learn from the study will result in a significant savings in the nation's health care costs," Dr. Duane Alexander, who heads the NIH 's Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, told reporters.

The study will begin in January when the University of North Carolina and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York start signing up pregnant women whose babies will then be followed to age 21.

Some of the early findings will be about factors behind pre-term birth, which has become more common in recent years, according to Dr. Peter Scheidt of the NIH, who heads the study.

The people taking part will be from rural, urban and suburban areas, from all in- come and educational levels and from all racial groups, the NIH said.

To sleep. Perchance to file？ Findings published online this week by the Proceedings of the Nation-al Academy of Sciences further support the theory that the brain organizes and stows memories formed during the day while the rest of the body is catching zzz's.

Gyorgy Buzsaki of Rutgers University and his colleagues analyzed the brain waves of sleeping rats and mice. Specifically, they examined the electrical activity emanating from the somatosensory neocor-tex (an area that processes sensory information) and the hippocampus, which is a center for learning and memory. The scientists found that oscillations in brain waves from the two regions appear to be in-tertwined. So-called sleep spindles (bursts of activity from the neocortex) were followed tens of milli-seconds later by beats in the hippocampus known as ripples. The team posits that this interplay be-tween the two brain regions is a key step in memory consolidation. A second study, also published on-line this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, links age-associated memory decline to high glucose levels.

Previous research had shown that individuals with diabetes suffer from increased memory prob- lems. In the new work, Antonio Convit of New York University School of Medicine and his collabora- tors studied 30 people whose average age was 69 to investigate whether sugar levels, which tend to in- crease with age, affect memory in healthy people as well. The scientists administered recall tests, brain scans and glucose tolerance tests, which measure how quickly sugar is absorbed from the blood by the body's tissues. Subjects with the poorest memory recollection, the team discovered, also dis- played the poorest glucose tolerance. In addition, their brain scans showed more hippocampus shrink- age than those of subjects better able to absorb blood sugar.

"Our study suggests that this impairment may contribute to the memory deficits that occur as people age. " Convit says. "And it raises the intriguing possibility that improving glucose tolerance could reverse some age-associated problems in cognition. " Exercise and weight control can help keep glucose levels in check, so there may be one more reason to go to the gym.

Life expectancy rates in the United States are al an all—time high, with people born in

2005 projected to live for nearly 78 years, a new federal study finds.

The finding reflects a continuing trend of increasing life expectancy that began in l955, when the average American lived to be 69.6 years old. By l995, lire expectancy was 75.8 years and by 2006, it had risen to 77. 9 years, according to the report released Wednesday.

"This is good news," said report co-author Donna Hoyert, a health scientist at the national Center for Health Statistics. “It's even better news that it is a continuation of trends, so it is a long period of continuing improvement."

Despite the upward trend, the United States still has lower lire expectancy than some 40 other countries, according to the U. S. Census （人口普查） Bureau. The country with the longest lire expectancy is Andorra at 83.5 years, followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and Singapore.

Much of the increase owes to declining death rates from the three leading causes of death in the country-heart disease, cancer and stroke.

In addition, in 2005, the U. S. death rate dropped to an all-time low of less than 800 deaths per l00, 000.

Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School Medicine. Said, "News that lire expectancy is increasing is, of course, good. But the evidence we have suggests that there is more chronic disease than ever in the U. S."

Adding years to life is a good thing, Katz said. "But adding vital life to years is at least equally important. If we care about living well, and not just longer, we still have our work cut out for us." he said.

When talking about the world's greatest poet and greatest dramatist, only one name can possible suggest itself;that of William Shakespeare. Nearly every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of this greatest writer. We use words, phrases and quotations form. Shakespeare's writings that have become part of the common property of English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we use. Shakespeare made full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner (or an Englishman) to appreciate the richness and variety of the english language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort, even thought some aspects of English and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day. It is a pity that we know so little about the life of the greatest English author. We only know that he was born in 1564 in Stratford on-Avon, and that then died there in 1616. He almost certainly attended the Grammar School in the town, but of this we cannot be sure. We know he was married there in 1582 and had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London, writing his masterpieces. But this is almost all that we do know. 

However, what is important about Shakespeare's life is not its incidental details but its products, the plays and the poems. For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare's life to the small number we already posses and for an equally long time critics have been theorizing about the plays. Sometimes indeed, it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear beneath the great mass of comment that has been written upon it. 

Fortunately this is not likely to happen. Shakespeare's poetry and Shakespeare's characters(Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet and all the others) have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and commentators and all their works have been forgotten.
