Big Cheese Chairs (BCC) manufactures and sells executive leather chairs. They are considering a new design of massaging chair to launch into the competitive market in which they operate.
They have carried out an investigation in the market and using a target costing system have targeted a competitive selling price of $120 for the chair. BCC wants a margin on selling price of 20% (ignoring any overheads).
The frame. and massage mechanism will be bought in for $51 per chair and BCC will upholster it in leather and assemble it ready for despatch.
Leather costs $10 per metre and two metres are needed for a complete chair although 20% of all leather is wasted in the upholstery process.
The upholstery and assembly process will be subject to a learning effect as the workers get used to the new design.
BCC estimates that the first chair will take two hours to prepare but this will be subject to a learning rate (LR) of 95%.
The learning improvement will stop once 128 chairs have been made and the time for the 128th chair will be the time for all subsequent chairs. The cost of labour is $15 per hour.
The learning formula is shown on the formula sheet and at the 95% learning rate the value of b is -0·074000581.
Required:
(a) Calculate the average cost for the first 128 chairs made and identify any cost gap that may be present at
that stage. (8 marks)
(b) Assuming that a cost gap for the chair exists suggest four ways in which it could be closed. (6 marks)
The production manager denies any claims that a cost gap exists and has stated that the cost of the 128th chair will be low enough to yield the required margin.
(c) Calculate the cost of the 128th chair made and state whether the target cost is being achieved on the 128th chair. (6 marks)

Keep an Eye on CEOs
Government policy decisions could speed or slow the pace of rehabilitation for the banks, and (31) turn, the stock market. David A. Hendler, a New York-based bank analyst at Credit-Sights, says his job has shifted from financial analysis toward Washington analysis. Essentially, his task is to figure (32) how quickly the government will permit weak banks to consolidate. When investors believe (33) know which banks will survive, they'll buy their stocks. The process is (34) critical to the stock market that Richard Bernstein, chief investment strategist at Merrill Lynch, is tracking six signposts for financial industry consolidation. Among them: the extent to which the government carves up and sells bad banks rather than buying into them to prop them (35) Other strategists are keeping a close eye on the people who really know what's happening in the economy: business leaders. Biderman says he'll know corporations are getting confident (36) they start buying back their own shares and acquiring other companies. Right now they show no such bravado. Announcements of share buybacks are down 90% from a year ago, leaving that market thermometer so cold that the mercury is off the scale.
In the end, the timing of the bear's retreat (37) likely hinge on that great market imponderable: psychology. How investors feel has a lot to do with (38) they start seeing mixed signals as proof of a glass half-full. "The market stress causes the analytical part of our brains to shut down, and that makes us hyperreactive (39) bad news, "says Michael A. Ervolini, CEO of Cabot Research, a consultancy catering to institutional investors. People become convinced conditions are worse than rock-bottom bad, he says. Only (40) they see that they've overacted can things improve: "We look for the market to start saying tomorrow will be brighter."

听力原文: Are electric cars the way of the future?Automobile manufactures are under pressure to develop cars that do not pollute. One powerful motive is a California law requiring that by the year 2020 ten percent of new car sells in the state be so called zero-emission vehicles. These cars must put no pollutants whatsoever into the at-mosphere.
California is a huge market for the automobile companies,so they are working hard to meet these standards. So far the electric car seems to be the best alternative. So the big advantage of electric cars is that they don't pollute. However they will be in competition with gas-powered cars and that's where the weaknesses come out.The big problem is that the batteries that power electric cars weigh a lot relative to the amount of power they deliver. For instance,in one prototype electric car,the batteries weighed 400 kilograms. And they provide enough energy to go 250 kilometers before recharging, which takes eight hours.Compare that to a moderately fuel-efficient conventional car,it can go 600 to 700 kilometers on a tank of gas and refilling takes just minutes. If there are other drains on an electric car's batteries besides the motor,headlights,air-conditioning or a heater, its already limited range will be significantly reduced. So automobile engineers are trying to make more powerful batteries that would increase the cars'range and make them more attractive to buyers.
Why does the electric car seem to be the best alternative so far?
A.It is comfortable.
B.It is best made.
C.It causes no pollution.
D.It makes less noise.
