听力原文: Well, I got this as a present from my father when I was 14. And I like it very much. But my family thought I might lose my interest soon, and then I went off the idea. Mum doesn't believe there will be any money in it, but Dad is quite interested because besides football it's the only thing I can talk to him about at the moment. If you're not going to make the effort to practice it, no one is ever going to be interested in you. I think one of the reasons you see few people playing in concerts is that they are not willing to do all that work.

What is the father interested in?

A.Singing and dancing.

B.Gift-making.

C.Football.

Passage 2

In her early days as an emergency room physician, Doctor Joanna Myer treated a child who had suffered a second degree burn. After the child had been treated and was being prepared for discharge, Doctor Myer talked to the parents about how they should care for the child at home. Also listening to her were a half a dozen other family members. A few hours later, when she came to say goodbye, the family asked her to settle an argument they’d been having over exactly what advice she had given. “As I talked to them, I was amazed.” she said, ”All of them had heard the simple instructions I have given just a few hours before, but they have three or four different versions. The most basic details were unclear and confusing. I was surprised, because these were intelligent people.” This episode gave Doctor Myer her first clue to something every doctor learns sooner or later- most people just don’t listen very well. Nowadays, she says she repeats her instructions, and even conducts a reality check with some patients. She asks them to tell her what they think they are supposed to do. She also provides take-home sheets which are computer printouts tailored to the patients’ situation. Doc. Myer’s listeners are not unusual. When new or difficult material is presented, almost all listeners are faced with the challenge because human speech lacks the stability and permanence of the printed word. Oral communication is fast-moving and impermanent.

听力原文: Well, I feel it is very important for families to have regular meals together. One of my good child memories was dinner with my parents and two sisters. Because my husband and I both work and our three children are busy with their studies, we seldom had a chance to get together as a family. But we thought it would be possible for us to sit down and enjoy meals together every week. First we try setting three fixed days: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. But almost everyone was unhappy. Then my son has the idea that every one told me his or her most convenient days and I would choose the two best days. For a while, the children were still unhappy with the idea. They said they would rather spend the time with their friends playing sports. Gradually, though, they began to see these evenings together as interesting, and helpful. We loved a lot. We made plans for trips. We discussed each other's problems. After a couple of months, anyone who had to miss a family meal felt regretful. And now, we all feel that we have been able to build much stronger relations within the family than we had before

Even so ,my wife was still worried. It was true we had a large garden, but there was still the problem of feeding(喂养)four growing boys.

"And what if it rains? she added.

Luckily Saturday morning turned out to be bright and clear when I went to the station to meet Aunt Clara. I pushed the boys, together with the luggage(行李) ,into the back of the car, with great difficulty of course. The youngest sat in front, with Aunt Clara and me.

On the way home. I talked over the shoulder(肩)to David, the eldest boy," I didn't see your tents among your luggage"

"The tents!" cried David. "My God! We left them at home."

听力原文:W: I heard that your family arrived yesterday, didn't they?

M: Yes, they did.

W: That's good! Dr. Morrison, your family is now in China with you. You won't miss them, then. To talk about the family, I want to ask you some questions about American families. Er. . . Do you most Americans live in "small families" or "big families"?

M: In the United States, most people normally choose to live in "small families", but we call them "nuclear families".

W: What is the average size of a nuclear family?

M: Well, it depends on the number of children, because the nuclear family consists of a husband, a wife and children. However, if there are no children, then the husband and wife are the nuclear family. Of course, there may be only one parent due to a death, separation or divorce. In this ease, the nuclear family is the single parent and children.

W: Are there any big families in the United States?

M: Oh, you mean the extended family. No, not many. Most Americans, both the elderly and the young couples prefer to live in their own homes.

W: Since most Americans live in nuclear families rather than in extended families, the majority of the elderly do not see their children and their relatives, do they?

M: Wall, people often make such assumptions, but that is not the case according to recent sociological research.

W: Oh, what's that?

M: The recent research shows that more elderly people in the United States live within ten minutes of their children by car than in Denmark, and over 78 percent of the elderly have seen their children within a week.

W: Now I've got a general idea about American family structure. Thank you.

M: You're welcome.

Most Americans prefer to live in

A.big families

B.small families

C.nuclear families

D.middle size families
