If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius (天才), they will cause great damage to him. According to several leading educational psychologists (心理学家), this is one of the biggest mistakes which some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parent expects. But unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children.

However, if parents are not unrealistic- about what they expect their children to do, but are hope ful in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well -- especially if the parents are very supportive of their child.

Michael Li is very lucky. He is very fond of music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Although Michael's mother knows very little about music, she supports her son. Michael's father plays the trumpet(小号) in a large orchestra(管弦乐队). However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.

Michael's friend, Winston Chen, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they make him enter every piano competition. They are very unhappy when he doesn't win. "When I was your age, I used to win every competition ! entered. "Winston's father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

The main idea of the passage is ______.

A.how parents should make a child a musician

B.how parents should bring up a child

C.what differences there are between two kinds of parents

D.what aim of a child can be much easier to reach

听力原文:W: So, what do you think of this place?

M: Well, I like the location, but it seems a bit darker than the other flat, don't you think?

W: Yes, you might be right, but that's because the walls are painted a darker colour, right?

M: You have a point there. If we can paint them a brighter colour…The rooms are not quite as spacious.

W: That's true, but there is an extra room. We could use that for storing items that we don't often use and our bicycles.

M: Good idea. There aren't so many stairs to climb either. As usual the key thing is money. This place is a little more expensive than the other one. Can we stretch our budget this far?

W: I think we can. Actually, I'm thinking less about the rent and more about the time we'll save getting to and from university.

M: Yes. We've both got part-time jobs, so we won't have any financial difficulties. We'll just save a little less, that's all.

W: What do you think of the landlady? She seems OK to me.

M: Yeah, she seems fine. Let's ask her about the painting. We can offer to do it ourselves and pay for the paint. I don't see how she could object to that.

W: Are you any good at painting?

M: My middle name is Picasso!

(20)

A.The rooms are smaller and darker than those in the other flat they looked at.

B.The rooms are larger and darker than those in the other flat they looked at.

C.The rooms are brighter and smaller than those in the other flat they looked at.

D.The rooms are brighter and larger than those in the other flat they looked at.

Do you often feel the quality of the goods we buy these days isn't as good as it ought to
be?

In the past, when things were made by hand, it seems there was a lot of pride in individual workmanship. People were really proud of things they made.

But now, of course, individuals don't make things. Most things are made on assembly lines and one person only has a very small part in putting something together so there isn't any workmanship any more.

A good example of this is a friend of mine, Mary. She bought a toaster last summer at a sale. She used it, I guess, pretty often, but she only had it a couple of months when suddenly the plastic base of the toaster cracked wide open, and at the same time the heating system in the toaster burned out.

She took it back to the store, but the clerk in the store said they wouldn't take it back, and they wouldn't give her money back, because she bought it on sale. So the only thing she could do was to buy a new one.

I'm sure Mary is more careful when she buys things now, and that's what we all have to be.

It can be learned from the passage that ______.

A.workmanship now can not be found as it was in the past

B.the toaster was broken because Mary used it too much

C.the quality of goods now isn't as good as it was

D.it is fair enough for the store not to give money back to Mary

听力原文:W: Hey, Jake, rise and shine.

M: What time is it, Shelly? I have no idea how long I've been here.

W: Hmm... the library is too quiet. You need a place that's nice and noisy to study.

M: You've got a point. I always mean to study hard but I quickly nod off. It's just too quiet here.

W: Maybe you were thinking of Professor Carlson's psychology lesson. That's as good as a sleeping pill.

M: Yeah, nice guy, but he just can't seem to come down to earth. The whole time he seemed to be talking to himself.

W: You should have been in my history class with Professor Rivers. What a trip! One student got up and challenged him to name six women who contributed to the American Revolution. He was speechless.

M: The class must have been buzzing.

W: Especially when the student started rattling off over a dozen names. She was no fool and she wasn't going to let him off the hook.

M: Seems she gave Professor Rivers a good lecture.

W: Yeah, although I felt she should have given him a chance to save some face. After all I doubt whether many people can name even one.

M: That's true. I sure can't.

W: Jake, Jake. You should attend Professor Anderson's class on women's studies.

M: Hmm... Maybe Rivers could join me.

(1)

A.He was studying.

B.He was making noises.

C.He was nodding off.

D.He was looking for a book.
