听力原文: Have you ever felt your mind got confused after a sleepless night? You couldn't come up with an original thought no matter how hard you tried.

You were probably right if you thought that was caused by a lack of sleep. Dr. Home, a sleep researcher in England, studied 24 college students divided into two groups. One group got their normal eight hours of sleep. The other group didn't get the smallest amount of sleep--they stayed awake all night. The next day, Dr. Home tested the students. He asked them questions that required creative and original thinking. One of the questions was "How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?"

The results? The wide-awake students did well on the tests. The tired students did poorly.

Research has already shown that tired people can do okay on tests of routine thinking, like simple addition. But Dr. Home tested creative thinking only.

As part of his study, he offered an amount of money as a reward to the sleepy students if they did well. But even this encouragement wasn't enough to help the students overcome their tiredness. They still did poorly. Dr. Home believes that the cerebral cortex--the part of the brain where thinking takes place--may get worn out during waking hours. Sleep may help to repair the brain overnight. "Without any sleep," he emphasizes, "even if you concentrate harder, you cannot do better." This study gives people something to think about, especially people like hospital workers and airline pilots, who must stay awake all night and then make emergency decisions.

(33)

A.The lack of sleep.

B.The difficult question.

C.The requirement of your creative thinking.

D.The requirement of your original thinking.

听力原文: Americans usually consider themselves a friendly people. Their friendships, howe
ver, tend to be shorter and more casual than friendships among people from other cultures. It's not uncommon for Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime. They tend to divide friendships, having "friends at work", "friends on the softball team", "family friends" and so on. Because the United States is a highly active society, full of movement and change, people always seem to be on the go. In this highly changed atmosphere, Americans can sometimes seem impolite or impatient. They want to get to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something else. Sometimes, at first, they will ask you questions that you feel very personal. No result is intended; the questions usually grow out of their real interest or curiosity, and their impatience to get to the heart of the matter. And the same goes for you. If you do not understand certain American behaviors or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask them questions about themselves. Americans are usually eager to explain all about their country or anything "American' in which you may be interested. So much so that you may become tired of listening. It doesn't matter, because Americans tend to be uncomfortable with silence during conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores that deal with silence. On the other hand, do not expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or world affairs, unless those subjects directly involve the United States. Because the United States is not surrounded by many other nations, some Americans tend to ignore the rest of the world.

(33)

A.American society.

B.American culture.

C.Americans' personality.

D.Americans' activity.

听力原文: A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way to get people to avoid unhealthy foods: change their memories. Scientist Elizabeth Loftus of the University of California at Irvine asked volunteers to answer some questions on their personalities and food experiences. "One week later," Loftus says, "we told those people we'd fed their answers into our smart computer and it came up with an account of their early childhood experiences." Some accounts included one key additional detail. "You got sick after eating strawberry ice-cream." The researchers then changed this detail into a manufactured memory through leading questions—Who were you with? How did you feel? By the end of the study, up to 41% of those given a false memory believed strawberry ice-cream once made them sick, and many said they'd avoid eating it.

When Loftus published her findings, she started getting calls from people begging her to make them remember hating chocolate or French fries. Unfortunately, it's not that easy. False memories appear to work only for foods you don't cat on a regular basis. But most important, it is likely that false memories can be implanted only in people who are unaware of the mental control. And lying to a patient is immoral, even if a doctor believes it's for the patient's benefit.

Loftus says there's nothing to stop parents from trying it with their overweight children. "I say, wake up—parents have been lying about Father Christmas for years, and nobody seems to mind. If they can prevent diseases caused by fatness and all the other problems that come with that, you might think that's a more moral lie. Decide that for yourself."

(33)

A.To improve her computer program.

B.To find out their attitudes towards food.

C.To find out details she can make use of.

D.To predict what food they'll like in the future.

听力原文: My child seems sad. Is he suffering from depression? Not necessarily: Normal sadness or grieving is not depression. Don't worry if your child occasionally feels blue or down. Life has its ups and downs, and it's normal for children to grieve over a loss or feel sad for a few hours or days at a time. But if his melancholy lasts for more than a couple of weeks or seems to interfere with his regular activities and relationships, he may be clinically depressed. Depression is far more than a temporary change in mood; it's marked by a sense of hopelessness and a lack of energy and enthusiasm that can last for weeks, months, or (in rare cases) even years at a time. The good news about depression is that it's almost always treatable. The key is identifying the problem and getting help. What are the symptoms?

It might seem logical that the most obvious symptom of depression would be sadness, but many depressed children say they don't feel sad or gloomy. Interestingly, one of the key signs of depression in children is irritability. Children may be depressed if they have trouble getting along with other kids and family members or have dramatic swings in mood. Other signs of depression include lack of energy, inability to concentrate, poor performance in school, a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, and frequent complaints about physical ailments like headaches or stomachaches.

If your child exhibits any symptoms of depression, ask yourself three questions: Is this behaviour new? Is it long-lasting or going on for several weeks or more? Are the symptoms interfering with his ability to function at home, in school, or with his friends? If you answer "yes" to any of those questions, you should probably have your child evaluated by a child or adolescent psychologist, psychiatrist, or other licensed mental health professional trained to work with children and adolescents.

(33)

A.The child seems sad.

B.The child occasionally feels blue or down.

C.His or her sadness lasts for a rather long period of time.

D.He or she feels life has its ups and downs.

Questions 26 to 35 are based on the following passage.

The method for making beer has changed over time. Hops (啤酒花),for example, which give many a modem beer its bitter flavor, are a (26)_______ recent addition to the beverage. This was first mentioned in reference to brewing in the ninth century. Now, researchers have found a (27)_______ingredient in residue (残留物)from 5,000-year-old beer brewing equipment. The majority of the grains, about 80%, were from cereal crops like barley (大麦),and about 10% were bits of roots, (32)_______lily,which would have made the beer sweeter, the scientists say. Barley was an unexpected find: the crop was domesticated in Western Eurasia and didn&39;t become a (33)_______food in central China until about 2,000 years ago, according to the researchers. 听力原文: Zachary Taylor was elected as the 12th president in 1849. It's surprising because he was the first president that didn't have any political experience. The main reason he was chosen as a candidate was because he was a war hero. In the army, his men called him old, rough and ready, I guess, because of his rough address. He was kind of blunt and he didn't really look like a military hero. He liked to do things like wearing civilian clothes instead of a uniform. even in battle. And he was so short and plump that he had to be lifted up onto his horse. But he did win a lot of battles and he became more and more popular. So the Whig Party decided to nominate him for the presidency, even though no one knew anything about where he stood on the issues. I couldn't find much about his accomplishments because he was only in office about a year and a half before he died. But one thing, he pushed for the development of a transcontinental railroad because he thought it was important to form. a link with the west coast. There was a lot of wealth in California and Oregon from commerce and minerals and stuff. Also, he established an agricultural bureau in the Department of the Interior and promoted more government aid to agriculture. He died in office in 1850. So his vice-president took over.

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

32. Why was Zachary Taylor chosen by his party as a candidate for president?

33. What can we know about Zachary Taylor?

34. Why did Taylor have little political achievements?

35. When did Zachary Taylor die?

(33)

A.He was well-known on the West Coast.

B.He made many political achievements.

C.He supported financial aid to farmers.

D.He was a popular war hero.
