All common electrical conductors have a certain amount of electrical resistance. They convert at least some of the electrical energy passing through them into waste heat. Superconductors don"t. No one understands how superconductivity works. It just does.

Making superconductors isn"t easy. A superconductor material has to be cooled to an extremely low temperature to lose its resistance. The first superconductors， made more than 50 years ago， had to be cooled to-263 degrees Celsius before they lost their resistance. Newer superconducting materials lose their resistance at -143 degrees Celsius.

The superconductors cable installed at the Frisbie station is made of a ceramic material that contains copper， oxygen， bismuth（铋）， strontium（锶）， and calcium（钙）. A ceramic is a hard， strong compound made from clay or minerals. The superconducting ceramic has been fashioned into a tape that is wrapped lengthwise around a long tube filled with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is supercold and lowers the temperature of the ceramic tape to the point where it conveys electricity with zero resistance.

The United States loses an enormous amount of electricity each year to resistance. Because cooled superconductors have no resistance， they waste much less power. Other cities are watching the Frisbie experiment in the hope that they might switch to superconducting cable and conserve power， too.

There are several American Indian groups in the Southwest that still make beautiful pottery.

Some of the most interesting pottery is made by the Pueblo Indians. There are 21 individual pueblos in Arizona and New Mexico. The resulting pots: which are prizedfor their delicacy and strength，may be left white. They may also be painted with black and white patterns or with a combination of black， orange， and brown.

The black color is the result of carbon being released from the animal manure （粪肥） in which the pot is fired. Some artisans hand -rub this ware to a shiny gloss. The most famous of those， the Jarvic-7， used air as a pumping device and was attached to an apparatus about the size of a washing machine.

"I think it"s potentially a major step forward in the artificial heart development，" said Dr.

David Faxon， president of the American heart Association. However， he said the dream of an implantable， permanent artificial heart is not yet a reality: "This is obviously an experimental device whose long-term success has to be demonstrated." Only about half of the 4，200 Americans on a waiting list for donor hearts received them last year， and most of the rest died.

Some doctors， including Robert Higgins， chairman of cardiology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond， said artificial hearts are unlikely to replace donor hears." A donor heart in a good transplant can last 15 to 30 years，" he said. "It"s going to be hard to replace that with a machine."

The Abiocor has a 2-pound pumping unit， and electronic controls that adjust the pumping speed based on the body"s needs. It is powered by a small battery pack worn outside the body that transmits current through the skin.

How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well？ When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language， we often find this interesting fact. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and， what is more important， always in its genuine form， with the right pronunciation， right intonation， right use of words and right structure. and expressions， which come to him in a flash， ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation.

Then the child has， as it were， private lessons all the year round， while an adult language-student has each week a limited number of hours， which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations， always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural， such as is often found in language lessons in schools， when one talks about ice and snow in Juneorscorching heat in January.

And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again， when his attempts at speech are successful， his desires are understood and fulfilled.

Finally， though a child"s "teachers" may not have been trained in language teaching， their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.

DNA is the genetic material found within the cell nuclei of all living things. In mammals the strands of DNA are grouped into structures called chromosomes. With the exception of identical siblings （as in identical twins）， the complete DNA of each individual is unique.

The first criminal conviction based on DNA evidence in the United States occurred in 1988. In criminal investigations， DNA fingerprints derived from evidence collected at the crime scene are compared to the DNA fingerprints of suspects. Generally， courts have accepted the reliability of DNA testing and admitted DNA test results into evidence. However， DNA fingerprinting is controversial in a number of areas: the accuracy of the results， the cost of testing，and the possible misuse of the technique.

The accuracy of DNA fingerprinting has been challenged for several reasons. First， because DNA segments rather than complete DNA strands are "fingerprinted" ; a DNA fingerprint may not be unique; large-scale research to confirn the uniqueness of DNA fingerprinting test results has not been conducted. In addition， DNA fingerprinting is often done in private laboratories that may not follow uniform. testing standards and quality controls. Also， since human beings must interpret the test， human error could lead to false results.

DNA fingerprinting is expensive. Suspects who are unable to provide their own DNA to experts may not be able to successfully defend themselves against charges based on DNA evidence.

If the well-known ancient sites deliver a great sense of history to the Games， the 39 new venues add a modem touch to the city of Athens. The main Olympic stadium， with a giant glass and steel roof，is the landmark （标志） building of the Olympics.

"We believe that we will organize a "magical" Games." said Athens 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos Daskalaki. "Our history with the Olympic Gaines goes back nearly 3，000 years， and Athens 2004 could be the best ever."
