Local Newspapers in Britain

1 Britain has a large circulation(发行量)of the national newspapers. The Daily Mirror andThe Daily Express both sell about 4 million copies each day.On average, every family will buyone newspaper in the mornin9,and take two or three on Sundays.

2 Local newspapers are just as popular 3S the national ones in Britain.Local papers have a weekly circulation of l3 million.Nearly every town and country area has its own paper, and almost every local paper is financially holding its own. Many local newspapers are earning good profits.

3 Local newspapers have their special characteristics. They mainly satisfy interest in local events-births,weddings,deaths,council meetings, and sports.Editors often rely on a small staff of people who know the district well.Clubs and churches in the neighborhood regularly supplymthese papers with much local news.Local news does not get out of date as quickly as nationalm news.If there is no room for it in this week’S edition.a news item can be held over until the following week.

5 Local newspapers seldom comment on problems of national importance.and editors rarely take sides on political questions. But they can often provide service to the community in expressing

public feeling on local issues.A newspaper can sometimes.persuade the counciltotake action to improve transport, provide better shopping facilities, and preserve local monuments and places

SQ3R

A Proven method for effective textbook reading is the SQ3R method developed by Francis Robinson. The first step is to survey (the S step) the chapter by reading the title, introduction, section headings, summary, and by studying any graphs, tables, illustrations or charts. The purpose of this step is to get an overview of the chapter so that you will know before you read what it will be about. In the second step (the Q step), for each section you ask yourself questions such as “What do I already know about this topic?” and “What do 1 want to know?” In this step you also take the section heading and turn it into a question. This step gives you a purpose for reading the section. The third step (the first of the 3R’s) is to read to find the answer to your questions. Then at the end of each section, before going on to the next section, you recite (the second of the 3R’s) the answers to the questions that you formed in the question step. When you recite you should say the information you want to learn out loud in your own words. The fifth step is done after you have completed step 2, 3, and 4 for each section. You review (the last of the 3R’s) the entire chapter. The review is done much as the survey was in the first step. As you review, hold a mental conversation with yourself as you recite the information you selected as important to learn. The mental conversation could take the form. of asking and answering the questions formed from the headings or reading the summary, which lists the main ideas in the chapter, and trying to fill in the details for each main idea.

The passage implies that the SQ3R method_______.

A.needs to be proven

B.leaves much to be desired

C.turns out to be practicable

D.cannot be used by every reader

第7题

Humans are the dominant (统治) species on planet Earth. Their numbers are increasing r
apidly. They are no longer restricted by their environment, as they can live in the most hostile of deserts or the bitter cold of Antarctic.Human culture is heavily based on the earth's natural resources -- oil, coal and metals; soil, water and forests. Industrialized society is using increasing amounts of these resources each year. Governments and industrialists strive for economic growth -- for factories and mines to produce more each year than they did in the previous year. But fuels and metals and, to a lesser extent, the soil are nonrenewable resources. Once used they are gone forever. In many cases the lifetime of these resources is coming to an end.Factories and machines create wastes. These wastes are poured into the atmosphere, the water and even into the soil. The damaging effect of this pollution is, in some cases, permanent. To reduce pollution creates further problems. Factories may have to be redesigned or even pulled down. This costs money and may mean loss of livelihood (生计) for many workers.Modern technology is creating an additional problem -- it is making industry more and more automatic (自动化 . This means that fewer and fewer people are needed to operate factories and offices. The consequent loss of jobs is a worldwide problem and western society is still struggling to find the answer. This introduction gives you some idea of the topics to be discussed in detail in this chapter.
