onth, and it's over $100! The worst part is, I didn't make all of the calls. There's a bunch of extra long distance calls.

M: That's unusual. Did you remember to pay your last bill?

W: Yes, I always pay on time. And the only time I make long distance calls is to speak to my sister in America. I'm on the Internet a lot, but that's a flat rate every month.

M: You should call the service provider today and see if they can sort out the problem. They can probably remove those charges from your bill.

What is the woman's problem?

A.She was overcharged.

B.She did not send payment.

C.She did not receive the bill.

D.She paid the wrong amount.

听力原文:M: The Republican Party in America is opposing stem cell research. I find it hard
to believe that in this day and age, someone would do that.

W: Stem cell research sounds pretty impressive,I'll admit. But just what is it?

M: Well,a stem cell is a special type of cell.It is a general cell that.when it divides.Call become any specific type of cell.

W: You mean,a stem cell can become a heart cell?Or a brain cell or a kidney cell?

M: That's about it.Stem cells are a part of the body's maintenance and repair system. When they divide, they can become any cell type.

W: I guess there would be some tremendous medical advantages in that sort of research.

M: You've said a mouthful.Recently, scientists were able to help a man who lost a jawbone from cancer. They recreated bone material for his jaw from stem cells. What it means is that since the new bone was created out of the person's own cells, there was no problem with rejection because the DNA was the same.

W: I bet the person was delighted. Why would anyone oppose that sort of research? It would seem to have endless potential to benefit the human race.

M: I agree, but there are people who think we should not interfere with nature and mainipulate"what is not natural".

W: It is easier to hold such a narrow view if you're not in a position to need the benefits of the research. If you're missing a jawbone because of cancer, you probably support the research.

What is the man's attitude toward the stem cell research?

A.Supportive.

B.Opposed.

C.Pessimistic.

D.Neutral.

Man: Certainly. It's 348-56-265.

Woman: And your identification code?

Man: Hamlet.

Woman: Right, Mr Bliss. What's the problem?

Man: Well, I received a statement from you this morning and there's a difference between that and our records. The statement shows a debit of£15,000 on June 10th, but no one here signed anything for that amount, so I'd like to know what's going on.

Woman: Yes, here it is £15,000. That's odd. It says cheque number 3-0-6-9-8-4.

Man: Yes, I can see that on the statement, but that can't be right. All our cheques begin with 5-0. It's not one of our cheques. You must have debited our account by mistake.

听力原文: Matthew Christopher, most countries now appear to be becoming increasingly concerned with the issue of pollution and its control. How do you see this problem?

Christopher What I see pollution as being…is the way the environment is being mishandled. Um…obviously there are certain waste products which are vomited out of motor cars or out of factories, either into the air or into the sea or into the river-ways and so on. But, you know, they are what people say is pollution, and in most of the publicity and…and action, they're just concerned on those particular items which are at the bottom of the scale. More important things that I think in terms of pollution, are the way that the environment in general is being misused…things like agriculture, where artificial fertilizers and over-cropping and so on actually… er…literally consume the environment. It is all picked up, collected…um… transported from the land in terms of food or fibres and then ends up in the sea at some stage, either through sewage or through waste products. Er…associated with that too things like erosion and also desecration of land by pushing trees down and so on, I drink that they are probably more significant.

Matthew Right. Michael, cart you tell me though whether…um… as I get the feeling, this is a problem which has been blown up by the various media, newspapers and television because people wish to avoid some of the more difficult problems to do with being a consumer society, having a growing economy and so on…and, in a sense trying to solve many aspects of the pollution problem is rather a sort of cleaning up process without getting to the root of the problem'?

Michael Well, pollution is a symptom really rather than a cause.

Matthew Mmm.

Michael But of itself it does produce many quite serious results. But we do have a problem of not really knowing what the long-term effects of many pollutants are going to be, so in those…in that sense, pollution can be extremely serious in its effects; but most forms of pollution in fact can be solved…um…fairly easily and usually by technical means. Now the problem…the difficulty with other environmental problems is that many of them have no technical solution and this is where the difference you get…the difference between those who are advocating technical solutions to problems which they see almost purely in terms of pollution or, on the other hand, you have people who see the real problems of society as a whole, the way we organize it, the way…the incredible waste of resources that we have, and so on.

Hiatthew This seems a very complex problem. Janet, how can individual members of the public, housewives, children at school, anyone…er…help to prevent pollution?

Janet Well, I think there are lots of things people can do in the home, or at school or in the office. When it comes to tackling the problems on a major basis, I mean it's a question of continual lobbying and pressuring, writing to newspapers etcetera. But I think there are many things that particularly housewives can do in the house, like for instance just not buying things that have no use after, you know, the package has been opened, to really make a note of the sort of stuff that goes in the rubbish bin, that's very important; you can cut down on the amount of packaging, on the amount of, for instance, water pollution like buying toilet paper that's dyed and all this sort of thing that people can cut down on. You can make a great effort not to buy a drink in, sort of, er…non-returnable bottles; to…um…either make your own food, such as jams and drinks which are quite easy to do, rather than just going out and buying and consuming more and more. And if you put this into practice in all walks of life, in the home and at school and in the office, this is a very, very good, major contribution

A.Certain waste products are vomited out of motorcars or out of factories.

B.The environment in general is being misused.

C.Some waste products are put into the air or the sea.

D.The publicity is only paid attention to.

听力原文: Crime is a serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is [29] juvenile delinquency—that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years, juvenile delinquency has been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crime, stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons.

These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in need. Young people often dislike and resent the adult world. [30] They will do things to show that they are rebels. Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like.

There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. [30] In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everybody knows everyone else.

Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something wrong with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow up in. I feel that [31] the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.

(30)

A.Crimes committed by young people.

B.Crimes committed by needy people.

C.Influence on young people.

D.Stealing and violence.

Language learning begins with listening. Individual children vary greatly in the amount of
listening they do before they start speaking, and late starters are often long listeners. Most children will"obey" spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word "obey" is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gestures and by making questioning noises.

Any attempt to trace the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words lead to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves out as particularly indicative (标示的) of delight, distress, sociability, and so on. But since these cannot be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new sounds to their store. This self-imitation (自我模仿) leads on to deliberate imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arisen so to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.

It is a problem we need not get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation; and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use, at say seven months, of "mama" as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes.

Playful(顽皮的)and apparently meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself. I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents, cash in on this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.

Children who start speaking late______.

A.probably do not hear enough language spoken around them

B.often take a long time in learning to listen properly

C.usually pay close attention to what they hear

D.may have problems with their hearing

听力原文:M: Hi, I heard you're looking for a different apartment.

W: Yeah. The place I'm in now is really terrible.

M: It was OK when I was there.

W: The boiler keeps breaking and when it does, we lose the heat for several days at the time.

M: Why doesn't the owner replace it?

W: Well, she said it's cheaper to keep fixing it. She is a nice enough person, just sort of stingy in any case. I'm sick of being cold.

M: Can you get your deposit back if you move?

W: If I give one-month notice, I can get the whole thing back.

M: So what kind of place are you looking for?

W: I think I'll try to get into one of those high rises near the university. There is nothing really special but at least they are new and functional.

M: I heard those buildings are pretty noisy. The walls are thin and you can hear everything going on in the other apartment.

W: Oh. That will never do. I need some place quiet to finish my thesis. I guess I'll have to look at some more ads. Maybe new isn't necessarily better.

M: Why don't you try some of those apartment at Windsor? They're supposed to be nice.

W: Oh, aren't they awfully expensive?

M: Not really. You'll be surprised at how reasonable some of them are. The problem with being out there is the bus doesn't run that way.

W: That definitely won't be a problem I can afford a car right now. I guess I'd better check a few places here in the city before I make a decision.

What is wrong with the woman's current apartment?

A.It's too noisy,

B.The walls are too thin.

C.The buses don't go in that direction,

D.The boiler often goes wrong.

听力原文:W: Well, Charles, I must say that your shop is pretty remarkable. Do people send
the fax messages abroad, or is it just to this country?

M: It's surprising because when I started, I thought I'd be sending things to London and maybe Birmingham but, in fact, a high percentage of it is sent abroad, because it's immediate and speedy.

W: And how much would it cost, for example, if I wanted to send a fax to the United States?

M: Well, a fax to the United States would cost you five pounds for a page. And when you think that in England by the Royal Mail, it would cost you twelve pounds to send a page by special delivery, it's actually a good value.

W: Ok. What about your hours? How long do you have to spend actually in the shop?

M: Well, the shop is open from eight in the morning until six at night, six days a week, and then a sort of fairly flexible morning on a Sunday. Urn, and of those hours, I'm in it quite a lot.

W: And did you enjoy it?

M: Yes, overall I enjoy it. Running a business by yourself is hard work and you never quite like every aspect all the time. 95 % of the customers I love. Uh, 2% I really, you know, I'm not too bothered about. And 3 % I positively hate.

W: What, what's the problem with those?

M: Urn, it's hard to categorize really. I find people who are just to- tally rude, urn, unnecessary, and I don't really need their business and I suppose they form. the volume of the people that I don't like but it's a very small percentage.

B.London.

C.Birmingham.
