(阅读理解)Having returned from her round trip(往返旅程), the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station.“The railway owes me£12,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office.“You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket.“Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely.“I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd.How could he have made such a careless mistake? “Yes,” she answered, shyly.“The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”

“I’m four,” the child said proudly.“I’ll be four and a half.” Harry turned to the mother.“I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said.“But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”

“Er, well——” the woman looked at the child.“I mean...she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”

“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam.A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs…let me see…£13.50.So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe£1.50.The law is the law, but since the fault was mine…”

Fishing is my favourite sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of (代替) catching fish, they catch old hoots (鞋子) and rubbish (垃圾). I am even less lucky. I never catch anything ... not even old hoots. After having spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. "You must give up fishing!" my friends say. "It's a waste of time." But they don't realize (意识到) one important thing. I'm not really interested in fishing. I'm only interested in sitting in a boat doing nothing at all!

第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

Dina Borzekowski made a study of a group of third-grade students from six American schools. During a school year, nearly 400 students and their parents were asked to report on whether they had such things as televisions and computers in the home, as well as how often the child used them. The children's language ability was tested (测验) twice over the year. Children who had a television set in the bedroom but did not have a computer at home scored (得分) the lowest, while students without TV in the bedroom but with a computer at home scored the highest. Students who had a television in the bedroom over the school year scored lower than those who had their TV taken away during the same time.

"This study suggests that taking TV sets out of children's bedrooms, or not putting them there, may be helpful," said Borzekowski. "While this study does not prove (证明) that bedroom TV was the reason for the lower test scores, it suggests that children shouldn't have TV in their bedrooms. It also suggests that a home computer may help a child's test scores. The best way was having both: no TV in the bedroom and also a home computer to use. "

Who took part in the study?

A.Teachers and parents.

B.Students and their teachers.

C.Students and their parents.

1.The Golden Rules of Negotiating

The art of negotiating is a difficult skill for most of us, even good salespeople. Here are three golden rules for you to follow: Always Start the Negotiations.

You must initiate the process. This is because whoever controls the start of the negotiations tends to control where they end. If you let the other party start negotiations, you will be constantly giving up control, often without even realizing it. For instance, when you ask someone what his project budget is, you are allowing him to start the negotiations. You will then spend your time chasing his number rather than finding the best solution. So, never let the other party control the negotiations.

2.Always Negotiate in Writing.

The purpose of negotiations is to arrive at a formal written agreement, not tell a story or spend time talking. From the first moment you begin a proposal, you should create a document and take it to the client. It will include all the points of agreement and become real to the prospective customer. Negotiating first and then having to create a document adds unnecessary time to a transaction. But if you build your written agreement as you negotiate, you are prepared to ask for a signature the moment the decision to buy is made.

3.Always Stay Cool.

The negotiation table can be loaded with agendas, egos and emotions. Great negotiators know how to stay cool, providing leadership and solutions, while the rest of the room becomes insanely invested in personal agendas and useless emotions. Crying, getting angry and blowing off steam may make you feel good, but such behavior will not benefit you while negotiating. When the rest of the room gets emotional, stay cool and use logic to negotiate and close.

1.If you let the other party start negotiations, you will be completely grasp the control, often without even realizing it.()

2.So, never let both parties control the negotiations.()

3.Negotiating first and then having to create a document doesn’t need necessary time to a transaction.()

4.Great negotiators know how to stay cool, providing leadership and solutions, while the rest of the room becomes wild or helpless during the negotiation.()

5.When the rest of the room gets out of control, stay cool and use logic to negotiate and close.()

1:阅读理解 In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of the inadequacies of
the judicial system in the United States. Costs are staggering both for the taxpayers and the litigants and, the litigants, or parties, have to wait sometimes many years before having their day in court. Many suggestions have been made concerning methods of ameliorating the situation but, as in most branches of government, changes come slowly. One suggestion that has been made in order to maximize the efficiency of the systems is to allow districts that have an overabundance of pending cases to borrow judges from other districts that do not have such a backlog. Another suggestion is to use pretrial conferences, in which the judge meets in his chambers with the litigants and their attorneys in order to narrow the issues, limit the witnesses, and provide for a more orderly trial. The theory behind pretrial conferences is that judges will spend less time on each case and parties will more readily settle before trial when they realize the adequacy of their claims and their opponents' evidence. Unfortunately, at least one study had shown that pretrial conferences actually use more judicial time than they save, rarely result in pretrial settlements, and actually result in higher damage settlements. Many states have now established another method, small-claims courts, in which cases over small sums of money can be disposed of with considerable dispatch. Such proceedings cost the litigants almost nothing. In California, for example, the parties must appear before the judge without the assistance of counsel. The proceedings are quite informal and there is no pleading—the litigants need to make only a one-sentence statement of their claim. By going to this type of courts, the plaintiff waives any right to jury trial and the right to appeal the decision. In coming years, we can expect to see more and more innovations in the continuing effort to remedy a situation which must be remedied if the citizens who have valid claims are going to be able to have their day in court. The word "litigants" in Paragraph 1 refers to______.

A.judges

B.attorneys

C.persons concerned in a lawsuit

D.government officials
