听力原文: You may remember that a few weeks ago we discussed the question of what photography is. Is it art or is it a method of reproducing images? Docs photography belong in museums or just in our homes? Today I want to talk about a person who tried to make his professional life an answer to such questions. Alfred Stieglitz went from the United States to Germany to study engineering. While he was over there he became interested in photography and began to experiment with his camera. He took pictures under conditions that most photographers considered too difficult. He took them at night, in the rain and of people and objects reflected in windows. When he returned to the United Stated he continued this revolutionary effort. Stieglitz was the first person to photograph skyscrapers, clouds and views from an airplane. What Stieglitz was trying to do in his photographs was what he tried to do throughout his life: make photography ail art. He thought that photography could be just as beautiful a form. of selfexpression as painting or drawing. For Stieglitz, his camera was his brush. While ninny photographers in the late 1800s and early 1900s thought of their work as a reproduction of identical images, Stieglitz saw his as creative art form. moment. In fact he never retouched his prints or made copies of thorn. If you are in this class today, I'm sure you'd say: Well, painters don't normally make extra copies of their paintings, do they?

B.Alfred Stieglitz' approach to photography.

C.Photographic techniques common in the early 1900's.

听力原文: A couple of months ago, I went to a department store to buy a few things for the house. I needed a set of curtains for the living room, two table lamps, a rug and several cushions. I asked them to deliver the things as soon as possible, but they said they were unable to send them out until 20 days later. After about 3 weeks, I received only the curtains and table lamps. I was a little disappointed when I didn't receive all the items I had bought. But nevertheless, I was eager to see what the curtains and lamps looked like. I first opened the package with the curtains. I had bought a lovely light blue, and instead they had sent me a horrible dark purple. Well, you can just imagine how angry I was. Then I opened the boxes with the lamps. They were exactly what I'd ordered. But one of the lampshades was damaged. The next I did was to telephone them to complain. They promised to come and pick them up immediately and also to replace them with the correct order. It has been two weeks since my complaint. They have neither picked up the wrong items nor sent me the rest of my order.

(26)

A.In about 20 years.

B.Within a week.

C.In a couple of weeks.

D.As early as possible.

听力原文:Email captures the essence of life at the close of the 20th century with an autho
rity that few other products of digital technology can claim. Email, ultimately, is a fragile thing, easy to forge, easy to corrupt, easy to destroy. A few weeks ago, a co-worker of mine accidentally and irretrievably wiped out 1,500 of his own saved messages. For a person who conducts most of his life online, such a digital tragedy is akin to erasing part of his own memory. Suddenly, nothing is left. He has lost himself as well as his links with others.

Which of the following is true, according to the passage?

A.Email shows more authority than other products of digital technology.

B.Email is as fragile a thing as it is convenient to its users.

C.Email can keep as many as 1,500 saved messages.

D.Email may help strengthen your own memory.

Memory

One day more than fifty years ago, a young man had an accident on his motor-bike in which he suffered a few apparently minor injuries. There was a bruise (淤青) on the left side of his forehead and some slight bleeding from his left ear.He was taken to hospital for examination but X-rays did not reveal any other injuries. Nevertheless, the doctor who was treating him decided to keep him in hospital for further observations because the young man was having difficulty in speaking and seemed very confused.

At the time of the accident, the young man was 22 years old, and the date was Au-gust, 1933.A week later, he was able to carry on what seemed a perfectly normal conver-sation.However, he told the doctor that he was only 11 years old and that the date was February, 1922.What is more, he could not remember anything that had happened since 1922.For example, he could not recall having spent five years in Australia, or coming back to England and working for two years on a golf course.

As time went by, part of his memory of the eleven missing years come back.A few weeks later, he even remembered his years in Australia. But the two years of his life just before the accident were still a completely a blank.Three weeks after his injury, he went back to the village where he had been living for those two years.Everything seemed unfa-miliar and he did not recall ever having been there before.Despite this, he was able to take up his old job again in the village and to do it satisfactorily. But he often got lost when walking around the village and found it difficult to remember what he had done during the day.

Slowly, however, his memory continued to return so that, about ten weeks after the accident, he could even remember most of the previous two years. There remained only one complete gap in his memory: he could remember absolutely nothing about what.he had done a few minutes immediately before the accident or the accident itself. This part of his memory never came back.

第 41 题 When did the accident happen?

A.In February 1922.

B.A few years ago.

C. when the young man was in Australia.

D.Over half a century ago.

第10题

听力原文: Isn't it amazing how small the world has become in recent years? Of course, the
physical size hasn't changed, but the world seems much smaller than it did a few hundred years ago. That's because of our improved ability to visit faraway places, contact one another, and instantly learn what goes on in other places.

A thousand years ago, people rarely left their town or village. Trips to nearby areas were made on foot or horseback, and there were fears of wild animals, bandits, and bad weather. Trips abroad were almost impossible for all but the richest and most powerful people. Communications were also limited, as it took weeks or even months to send letters long distances.

About 150 years ago, train travel made trips hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away possible. Also, with the invention of the telegraph, messages could be sent long distances at a low price. Many barriers of distance and communication were starting to fall.

In the 20th century, inventions such as the automobile, airplane, telephone, and television changed people's lives greatly. People could travel across a city in a few minutes or across the world in a few hours. Televisions allowed people to witness important events while they took place. Computers and the Internet let people send letters instantly, access huge amounts of information, and make new friends around the world.

As local communities continue to link together to form. the global community, there will surely be many new tools and methods that make the world seem even smaller.

Which of the following statements is NOT true about life 150 years ago?

A.Travelling long distances were easier than before.

B.Messages could be sent quickly.

C.Crossing the ocean could be done safely.

D.The fear of wild animals became a big barrier of communication.
