A team of researchers has found that immunizing patients with bee venom instead of with th
e bees' crushed bodies can better prevent serious and sometimes fatal sting reactions in the more than one million Americans who are hypersensitive to bee stings. The crushed-body treatment has been standard for fifty years, but a report released recently said that it was ineffective. The serum made from the crushed bodies of bees produced more adverse reactions than the injections of the venom did.

The research compared results of the crushed-body treatment with results of immunotherapy that used insect venom and also with results of a placebo. After six to ten weeks of immunization, allergic reactions to stings occurred in seven of twelve patients treated with the placebo, seven of twelve treated with crushed body extract, and one of eighteen treated with the venom.

The word "fatal" in paragraph 1, sentence 1 is closest in meaning to ______.

A.harmful

B.lethal

C.painful

D.disease-causing

听力原文:M: Hi, Sue. Where have you been?

W: Oh. Hi, Dan. I was just at the library. I have to hand in my biology paper tomorrow.

M: Tomorrow? Oh, no. I thought it wasn't due till Monday.

W: Oh. Don't worry. It is due Monday. But I'm going away for the weekend and won't be back till Monday night.

M: Oh, where are you going?

W: California. We're having a family reunion. It's my grandmother's ninetieth birthday. So all the cousins and aunts and uncles are going. She planned the whole thing herself.

M: Wow. That's great. How many people will be there?

W: Around sixty. My family is big and spread out but we're pretty dose. So have you started working on your biology paper?

M: Yeah. I'm doing it on bees and how they're able to recognize whether another bee is related to them.

W: How can they tell?

M: They use their sense of smell. The honey bees guard their nests this way. If another bee approaches the nest, the guard determines if the new bee is familiar. If it is, it's allowed to enter.

W: Interesting. Can other insects do this? Well, the paper wasps can. Each wasp nest has a special combination of plant fibers and se the wasps that live there have a unique smell. Those two are the only kinds I've read about so far.

M: Well, you've still got time. It sounds like that the bees are picky about who comes to their family reunion.

Most consumers are familiar with bar codes. Those black-and-white stripes appear on almost
every product purchased. Often the codes are scanned at the checkout counter, causing the item name and its price to appear on (141) the cash register screen and the receipt. This gives a record to the consumer and helps store management monitor inventory.

Many delivery services use bar codes to track the progress of each envelope, package, or crate in transit. Every item (142) a bar code, which is read at a number of points from the moment it leaves the sender's hands to the moment the recipient accepts the delivery.

An interesting use for the bar code has been developed by a scientist who works with bees. The scientist attached bar codes to the backs of individual bees in order to (143) them and to follow their movements. Laser scanners at the entrance of the hive read the bar codes to monitor how long each bee had been gone from the hive. By keeping (144) of individual bees, scientists hope to learn more about honey production. Knowing how far bees travel to gather pollen and how many trips they make back to the hive could eventually help beekeepers predict honey yields.

Where Have All the Bees Goner

Scientists who study insects have a real mystery on their hands. All across the country, honeybees are leaving their hives (蜂巢) and never returning. Researchers call this phenomenon colony-collapse (群体瘫痪) disorder. It is reported that 25 to 40 percent of the honeybees in the US have vanished from their hives since last fall. So far, no one can explain why.

Colony collapse is a serious concern' because bees play an important role in' the production of about one-third of the foods we eat. As they feed, honeybees spread pollen (花粉) from flower to flower. Without this process, a plant can't produce seeds or fruits.

Now, a group of scientists and beekeepers have teamed up to try to figure out what's causing the alarming collapse of so many colonies. They hope to find out what's contributing to the decline and to prevent bee disappearance in the future.

It could be that disease is causing the disappearance of the bees. To explore that possibility, Jay Evans, a researcher at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Bee Research Laboratory, examines bees taken from colonies that are collapsing. "We know what a healthy bee should look like on the inside, and we can look for physical signs of disease," he says. And bees from collapsing colonies don't look very healthy. "Their stomachs are worn down, compared to the stomachs of healthy bees," Evans says. It may be that a parasite (寄生虫) is damaging the bees' digestive organs. Their immune (免疫的) systems may not be working as they should. Moreover, they have high levels of bacteria inside their bodies.

Another cause of colony-collapse disorder may be certain chemicals that farmers apply to kill unwanted insects on crops, says Jerry Hayes, chief bee inspector for the Florida Department of Agriculture. Some studies, he says, suggest that a certain type of insecticide (杀虫剂) affects the honeybee's nervous system and memory. "It seems like honeybees are going out and getting confused about where to go and what to do," he says.

If it turns out that a disease is contributing to colony collapse, bees' genes could explain why some colonies have collapsed and others have not. In any group of bees there are many different kinds of genes. The more different genes a group has, the higher the group's genetic diversity. So far scientists haven't determined the role of genetic diversity in colony collapse, but it's a promising theory, says Evans.

What is the mystery that researchers find hard to explain?

A.Honeybees are flying all across the country.

B.Half of the honeybees in the US have died.

C.Honeybees are leaving their hives and do not return.

D.Honeybee hives are in disorder.
