Facts about Stroke

1Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke. Every 3.1 minutes, someone dies of one.

Stroke killed an estimated 167,661 people in 2000 and is the nation&39;s third leading cause of death, ranking behind diseases of the heart and all forms of cancer. Stroke is a leading cause of serious ,long-term disability in the United States.

2 Stroke is a type of cardiovascular(心血管的) disease. It affects the arteries(动脉) leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients(营养物) to the brain is either blocked by a clot(凝块) or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood(and oxygen)it needs,so it starts to die.

3The brain is an extremely complex organ that controls various body functions. If a stroke occurs and blood flow can&39;t reach the region that controls a particular body function, that part of the body won&39;t work as it should. If the stroke occurs toward the back of the brain, for instance, it&39;s likely that some disability involving vision will result. The effects of a stroke depend primarily on the location of the obstruction(阻塞) and the extent of brain tissue affected.

4The American Stroke Association has identified several factors that increase the risk of stroke.

The more risk factors a persor has,the greater the chance that he or she will have a stroke. Some of these you can&39;t control, such as increasing age, family health history, race, and prior stroke. But you can change or treat other risk factors to lower your risk. Factors resulting from lifestyle. or envi-ronment can be modified with a healthcare provider&39;s help. Some of these include : high blood pres-sure,current smoking, heart disease, and high red blood cell count.

5A stroke can happen to anyone at any moment. In fact about 600,000 people have strokes every year. For many years, there was no hope for those suffering a stroke. However, recent break-throughs have led to new treatments. For the treatments to work, the person must get to a hospital immediately.

If you have a heart disease or condition, high-intensity exercise for longstretches could

Predictably, participants who(4)less than 2 times a week weredetermined to be at greater risk for a heart attack. However, counter-intuitively (直觉地 ) , participants who exercised more than the average were also twice aslikely to have a heart attack or stroke than the average.

A different study found that young men who engage in endurance exercisemore than five hours a week may(5)their risk of developing an irregular heartrhythm later in life.

Swedish researchers surveyed 44,000 men, ages 45-79, about theirexercise(6)at ages of 15,30,50 and over in 2013. Those who exercised(7)formore than five hours a week were 19% more likely to have developed an irregularheartbeat, which is a(8)factor in stroke risk.

Despite their findings, researchers(9)sounding the alarm full-force onintense exercise, citing the "benefits of exercise" while clarifying that "thestudies reviewed here, and future studies, will serve to maximize benefits obtainedby(10)exercise while preventing undesirable effects of intense exercise."

Squishy (可挤压的)Cellphones Add a Buzz (振动声) to Calls

Vibrating rubber cellphones could be the next big thing in mobile communication. They allow people to communicate by squishing the phone to transmit __ (1) along with their spoken words. According to a research team at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the idea will make __ (2) more fun.

Many mobile phones can already be made to vibrate __ (3) ring when you do not want people to know you are getting a call. But these vibrations(振动),__ (4) by a motor spinning an eccentric(离心的,偏轴的) weight inside the device, are too crude for subtle communication, says Angela Chang of the lab's Tangible Media Group."They are__ (5) on or off," she says.

But when you grip Chang' s prototype (样机) latex (橡胶) cellphone, your fingers and thumb wrap around five __ (6) speakers. They vibrate__ (7) your skin around 250 times per second. Beneath these speakers sit pressure sensors(传感器), so you can transmit vibration as well as __ (8) it.When you squeeze with a finger, a vibration signal is transmitted __ (9) your caller's corresponding finger. Its __ (10) depends on how hard you squeeze.

She says that within a few minutes of being given __ (11) the phones, students

were using the vibration feature to add emphasis to what they were saying or to interrupt the other speaker.Over time, people even began to transmit their __ (12) kind of ad hoc(专门的) "Morse Code" (摩尔斯电码), which they would repeat back to show they were following what the other person was saying. "It was pretty easy to communicate, though we didn't specifically pre-arrange __(13)," says David Milovich, one of the students who tried out the device.

Chang thinks "vibralanguages" could__(14) for the same reason as texting(发短信) : Sometimes people want to communicate something __ (15) everyone nearby knowing what they're saying."And imagine actually being able to shake someone's hand when you close a business deal," she says.
