A new experimental vaccine(疫苗) has shown promising results in the fightagainst lung cancer. In a small Texas-based study, a vaccine developed byscientists at Baylor University Medical Centre inDallas,USA, cured lungcancer in some patients and slowed the progress.of the disease in others.

Researchers have reported encouragingfindings from this small study. Forty-three patients suffer-ing from lungcancer were involved in these trials. Ten of these patients were in the earlystages andthirty-three in the advanced stages of the disease. They wereinjected with the vaccine every two weeksfor three months, and were carefullymonitored for three years. In three of the patients in the advancedstages ofcancer, the disease disappeared and in the others, it did not spread for fiveto twenty-fourmonths. However, no great difference was seen in the patients inthe early stages of the illness.

This new vaccine uses the patient's ownimmune system It is made specifically for each patient and is in-jected intothe arm or leg. It stimulates (刺激) the body's immunesystem, which then recognizes that thecancer cells are harmful, and attacks anddestroys them

The vaccine could be effective againstother forms of cancer. It offers great hope for the treatmentof cancer ingeneral, although further studies are needed before such treatment can bewidely used.

The vaccine cured all the participants in the trial.

Culture is the sum total of all the traditions, customs, belief and ways bf life of a give
n group of human beings. In this sense, every group has a culture, however savage, undeveloped, or uncivilized it may seem to us.

To the professional anthropologist, there is no intrinsic superiority of one culture over another, just as to the professional linguist there is no intrinsic hierarchy among languages.

People once thought of the languages of backward groups as savage, undeveloped form. of speech, consisting largely of grunts and groans. While it is possible that language in general began as a series of grunts and groans, it is a fact established by the study of "backward" languages that no spoken tongue answers that description today. Most languages of uncivilized groups are, by our most severe standards, extremely complex, delicate, and ingenious pieces of machinery for the transfer of ideas. They fall behind the Western languages not in their sound patterns or grammatical structures, which usually are fully adequate for all

This study of language, in turn, casts a new light upon the claim of the anthropologists that all cultures are to viewed independently, and without ideas of rank or hierarchy.

The author uses "backward" here to indicate that ______.

A.backward languages are connected with backward groups

B.backward languages are connected with backward cultures

C.backward languages are moving forward

D.there is no such thing as backward languages

Do you have bright ideas? Ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life
easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don't often make the ideas into realities. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16. And there were eleven prize-winners altogether.

Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called "Sunshine Superman(超人)." It's important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil's is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power. You can do so much with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West's for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear as you go nearer or farther from them. This isn't new idea, But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. "We found that people were more likely to see moving signs." said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff(悬崖). Quite a warning!

The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British doesn't ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of "pupil power"!

The writer holds the view that people seldom

A.have bright ideas

B.turn their bright ideas into realities

C.make their life easier

D.think of inventing something

听力原文: An almost 100-year-old English textbook might be the earliest such book published in China, its owner, Mr. Wang, told reporters last week in Beijing.

The 440-page textbook, entitled "English with Chinese Phonetics", was possibly published in 1904 or before, predating another early textbook, "English Words at Entrance Level", which was thought to be the earliest English textbook in China.

Though almost a century old, with pages yellow with age, the various letter types listed in the book are still clearly recognizable, displaying the high standard of print quality at that time. As the title of the book suggests, the textbook uses Chinese characters to provide phonetic equivalent for English words, thus constituting a major drawback of this early school tutorial work, since there was no such a thing as standardized Mandarin at that time, the phonetics were arranged in line with the so-called "orthodox" Cantonese, resulting in misleading and what today seems a quite funny effect. Nevertheless, the book has been hailed as a "revolutionary guidebook inventing creative study methods for those ambitious people doing foreign businesses".

The book was acquired by its present owner, Mr. Wang, quite by chance. In 1992, when he was living in Papua New Guinea, an old local Chinese, originally from Guangdong Province presented him the book as a gift.

U.S., European Drug Officials Approve Inhaled Insulin

A form. of insulin for people with diabetes to take by mouth is expected to be sold within a few months. The new medicine is called Exubera. The United States Food and Drug Administration: and the European Commission both recently approved it for adults. It could make life easier for many diabetics who require daily injections of insulin to control their blood sugar levels. But it will not replace all insulin injections. And it is not for everyone. People who smoke or have stopped smoking for less than six months should not take Exubera.(46)

Three drug companies -- Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis and Nektar Therapeutics -- developed the inhaled insulin.(47)Experts say about fifteen percent of diabetics who need insulin do not take it. The treatment can involve several injections each day.

Insulin is a hormone that the body uses to change food into energy. Failure to control blood sugar levels can lead to serious problems, including blindness and loss of blood flow to the feet. It can also lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney failure4. Insulin has been sold as a drug since the nineteen twenties. This is the first new way to take it. Exubera uses a powder breathed into the lungs through a mouthpiece. Pfizer will study the long-term effects. It says some patients have reported a mild cough while using the inhaled insulin.(48).

Many people do not know they have diabetes. There are two forms. Most diabetics have the Type Two form. Their body does not make enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.(49)Most Type Two diabetics do not take insulin. Their medicines can be taken by mouth. Diet, exercise and weight control are also important. Type One diabetes often begins in childhood.(50).

Officials say diabetics with either type could use inhaled insulin, either before or after a meal. But Type One diabetics and some with Type Two would still need a longer-lasting injection at least once a day.

A. With this type the body is unable to produce insulin.

B. Pfizer recently bought the rights to sell it worldwide.

C. The control of their blood sugar levels is most important for patients with diabetes.

D. It is common in people who are overweight and not active.

E. Some patients with lung disease should not take it either.

F. People are advised to have their lungs examined before using Exubera, and at least once a year after that.

Culture, Language and Equality

Culture is the sum total of all the traditions, customs, belief and ways of life of a given group of human beings.

While it is possible that language in general began as a series of grunts and groans, it is a fact established by the study of “backward” languages that no spoken tongue answers that description today. Most languages of uncivilized groups are, by our most severe standards, extremely complex, delicate, and ingenious pieces of machinery for the transfer of ideas. They fall behind the Western languages not in their sound patterns or grammatical structures, which usually are fully adequate for all language needs, but only in their vocabularies, which reflect the objects and activities known to their speakers. Even in this department, however, two things are to be noted: 1. All languages seem to possess the machinery for vocabulary expansion, either by putting together words already in existence or by borrowing them from other languages and adapting them to their own system. 2. The objects and activities requiring names and distinctions in “backward” languages, while different from ours, are often surprisingly numerous and complicated. A western language distinguishes merely between two degrees of remoteness (“this” and “that”); some languages of the American Indians distinguish between what is close to the speaker, or the person addressed, or remote from both, or out of sight, or in the past, or in the future.

This study of language, in turn, casts a new light upon the claim of the anthropologists that all cultures are to viewed independently, and without ideas of rank or hierarchy.

The author uses “backward” here to indicate that______.

A.backward languages are connected with backward groups

B.backward languages are connected with backward cultures

C.backward languages are moving forward

D.there is no such thing as backward languages
