?Read the extract below about advertising.

?For each question 31-40, write one word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

Is More Advertising Needed

The effectiveness of advertising is a hugely controversial area. Conventional wisdom in the industry is that sales may well increase for a Certain period even after the advertising of a product ends. But (31) comes a point when sales start to decline and it then becomes extremely expensive to rebuild the brand. This supports the idea of continuous advertising. But some people in the industry believe the conventional wisdom is (32) longer true. When America's big TV networks reached prime-time audiences of 90% of households, they were a powerful way to build a brand. (33) that those audiences might be as low as one-third of households, other ways of promoting a brand have (34) more competitive. Moreover, many clients never really embraced continuous advertising: when times get tough, just as they (35) after 2000, one of the first things many companies cut is their ad budget.

Robert Shaw, a visiting professor at the Cranfield School of Management in Britain, runs a forum in (36) a number of big companies try to monitor the "marketing payback" from advertising. The return from traditional media was, he says, "never terribly good". Generally nearly half of ads provide a return (37) their investment. And there can be various reasons why ads influence sales, other (38) their direct effect on consumers. (39) instance, if a producer announces a multi-million dollar ad-campaign, then retailers are often persuaded to increase, deliveries. This can result (40) a "distribution effect" that leads to additional sales.

听力原文: We may engage ourselves with music as a creator, that is a composer, or as a recreator, that is a performer, but most of us engaged ourselves with music as a receiver. That is a listener. As a listener, we respond to music with different levels of receptivity. We may be very causal and careless about the way we hear music, paying almost no attention to it. Elevator or telephone music, for example, is not meant to be listened to intently. We have all used music as background sound to create a pleasant atmosphere for our own quiet thought. On the other hand, especially when we are on the road, an easy listening station can create a dream-like haze and we may deliberately turn out the music so as to concentrate on the driving.

However, there are other times when music is the center of our focus. And we give it our full attention. This could be in a church, at a special event or at a concert. But how are we supposed to listen and what are we supposed to listen for. Basically, there are two ways to experience music. Some people let the sounds wash over them like a sauna bath and an emotional flood. This is the sensuous level. Other listeners respond on a perceptive or analytical level, paying attention to various aspects of the music as they unfold. They listen for musical events. The first level of attending to music is purely emotive. The second analytical. Ideally, we learn to listen more perceptively in order to increase the emotional impact. As a result, the second way of perceptive or analytical listening reveals the expressive power of the music composition so that we can enjoy it more fully.

Job or money?

Would you quit your job if you didn’t need the money? In a 1990 poll by the Gallop Organization, many people said quitting work was an imprtant reason to be rich.Yet researchers find that work is one of life’s chief satisfactions for people.

Consider W.Berry Fowler. In 1979,Fowler started a tutoring company that became so successful he was able to sell out and retire in 1978一a multimillionaire at 40. He bought a 50-foot cabin cruiser(可住宿的游艇)and a house in Hawaii, and busied himself vacationing.

But after five years of perpetual vacation, nower began to miss the challenges of work.So in 1992,he bought a fitness chain for children and now spends 75 hours a week immersed in balance sheets and staff meetings.“My best days on the golf course weren’t half as much fun as a good day at the office.”he says.

A job, studies show,is more than a paycheck.Doing something Well can increase confidence and self—worth. When sociologist H.Ray Kaplan surveyed 139 lottery(彩票)millionaires,he discovered 60 percent continued working at least a year after they’d won.

If jobs are so important, wouldn’t salary size be a gauge(标准尺)of job satisfaction?Americans think so.A survey conducted last year by Roper Starch Worldwide,Inc.,found that almost 70 percent of the respondents said they would be happier if their families had twice as much household income.Yet studies show that job satisfaction comes less from how much people earn than from the challenge of their jobs and the control they are able to exert.work that doesn’t engage a person will never seem rewarding,no matter how lucative(有理可图的)it becomes.
