Personality comes from the Latin word "persona" which means "mask". Thus, it can be said t

hat personality is a ' mask' a person wears to face the world. No two persons are identical in terms of personality. A person's tastes and ideas add to the colors of his or her personality. Effectively, personality is the outward reflection of a person's inner self. If John is a person who likes to give to the less fortunate, people will remember him as a kind person. In a sense, personality is the colors of a person.

In the normal walk of life, we come across people who are more popular than others. Popularity is a subjective phenomenon and many a sociologist is still trying to figure out what makes for popularity. A person with a bright personality is usually more popular than a person with a dull personality, right? Beautiful people are usually more popular than ugly people, right? Actually, it's hard to pinpoint (确定) what kind of personality is popular and what is unpopular.

Behavior. can be described as the manifestation of personality in response to a situation. No two persons will react to the same situation in the same manner. This is because of the person's personality. Let's take the example of an introvert and an extrovert. We shall create a situation to study how they behave in the same environment. The introvert and the extrovert are placed into two identical rooms at the same time. Every effort is taken to ensure that the environment is the same. They are told to read a book in 2 hours. Then, we ask a group of hooligans (小流氓) to go into the rooms and beat the rooms. How do you think the introvert and the extrovert will behave in such an environment? We don't know but we know they will behave differently.

Are you satisfied with how your career is turning out? You may not consciously know it but your personality has a great bearing of your job performance. If you are extremely shy and hate to socialize, you are not cut for a sales job or a PR(公共关系)position. You may try to change your ways and take on a more outgoing style. but you may not be happy. There are some personality characters which are inherent. If you know yourself well, you will find a career that suits your personality and excel in it.

We may infer from the first paragraph that______.

A.we have to face the world with masks

B.personality can be shown through one's actions

C.people's personalities are all fixed through their life

D.people's personalities are totally different from each other

Among the minds powers is one that comes of itself to many children and artists. It need n
ot be lost, to the end of his day, by anyone who has ever had it. This is the power of taking delight in a thing, rather than in anything, everything, not as a means to some other end, but just because it is what it is, as the lover dotes on whatever may be traits of the beloved object. A child in the full health of his mind will put his hand flat on the summer turf, feel it and give a little shiver of private glee at the elastic firmness of the globe. He is not thinking how it will do for some game or to feed sheep upon. That would be the way of the wooer whose mind runs on his mistresss money. The childs is sheer affection, the true ecstatic sense of the things inherent characteristics. No matter what the things may be, no matter what they are good or bad for, there they are, each with a thrilling unique look and feel of its own, like a face; the iron astringently cool under its paint, the painted wood familiarly warmer, the cold crumbling enchantingly down in the hands, with its little dry smell of the sun and of hot nettles; each common thing a personality marked by delicious differences.

If you thought handshakes were just a gesture of greeting, then think again! A handsha

ke is not only a way of greeting; it can also show your personality. Since we all want to set a good first impression, it is important to know the right shaking hands manners.

Stand up and maintain eye contact while shaking hands. If you are seated when someone comes for a handshake, stand up and shake his or her hand. It is impolite to be still seated. Keep right distance between the two of you; not too close, but enough distance to shake your hands well. Keeping eye contact makes the other person feel welcome and comfortable.

Keep a handshake brief and firm. You let go of each other's hand after 2-3 seconds. Make sure your handshake ends before your conversation does. One's handshake should show a feeling of strength and warmth. The hand should be firm and not lifeless like seaweed. Then, how firm should a handshake be? Text 2

Identical twins are a perfect test case for theories of personality development. If a theory can' t explain the differences between identical twins, then it cannot explain environmental effects on per-sonality. Even identical twins brought up in the same home have different personalities.Take Ladan and Laleh Bijani from Iran. They were identical twins who had spent their entire 29 years joined at the head. And yet, Ladan, the more outspoken of the pair, told journalists,"We are two completely separate individuals. we have different world views,We have different lifestyles, we think very differently about issues. " Why did Ladan and Laleh have different person-alities?

Self-organized systems in insects can provide us with some ideas. A colony of ants, for exam-ple, can be seen as a self-organized system. No supervisor tells the ants what to do, and yet all the jobs get done. The system works in such a way that if one ant carries out a particular job, it be- comes less likely that another ant will attempt that job because it no longer needs doing. The result is what economists call "division of labor. "

Self-organization also produces division of labor in human groups. Each individual looks for something to specialize in, his or her own suitable position in the group. If one position is occu-pied, the individual will seek another. This process increases the differences even between identical twins, because once they' ve chosen different specialities, a circular mechanism causes small initial differences between them to widen.

Although identical twins look very much alike, people who know them well will distinguish between them. They might ,for example, address more questions and comments to one twin than the other-perhaps by chance first. But the consequence is that the twin who is addressed more often will do more talking than the other twin, which will cause people who know them to address still more of their questions and comments to that twm. The result, over time, will be one outspo-ken twin and one quieter one-like Ladan and Laleh Bijani.

51. According to the writer we learn that identical twins_________

[ A] differ in personality

[B] differ in appearance

[C] have the same lifestyle

[D] have the same outlook

Early or Later Day Care

The British psychoanalyst John Bowlby maintains that separation from the parents during the sensitive "attachment" period from birth to three may scar a child's personality and predispose to emotional problems in later life. Some people have drawn the conclusion from Bowlby's work that children should not be subjected to day care before the age of three because of the parental separation it entails, and many people do believe this. But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion.

Firstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents found in modem societies does not usually exist in traditional societies. For example, in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a child did not rear their infant alone--far from it. Secondly, common sense tells us that day care would not be so widespread today if parents, care-takers found children had problems with it. Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carded out, and even if they were, the results would be certain to be complicated and controversial. Thirdly, in the last decade there have been a number of careful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neutral or slightly positive effect on children's development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are not widely enough accepted to settle the issue.

But Bowlby's analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead to, say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics. Whatever the long-term effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with. Children under three are likely to protest at leaving their parents and show unhappiness. At the age of three or three and a half almost all children find the transition to nursery easy, and this is undoubtedly why more and more parents make use of child care at this time. The matter, then, is far from clear-cut, though experience and available evidence indicate that early care is reasonable for infants.

Which of the following statements would Bowlby support?

A.The first three years of one's life is extremely important to the later development of personality.

B.Early day care can delay the occurrence of mental illness in children.

C.Statistical studies should be carried out to assess the positive effect of day care for children at the age of three or older.

D.Children under three get used to the life at nursery schools more readily than children over three.
