Why Seeing Is Succeeding

Robert Celik of the New York Business Institute tells

There are some executives who get it right. They launch winning products, and have a feeling for what customers like and dislike. They do not depend on research or secondary information, and yet they know the market extremely well.

Take Steve Banks, developer of the best-selling personal finance software, Nicat. He had noticed how difficult it was to use existing software products, and realized there was a gap in the market. Although 51 competing packages were available when Nicat was launched, it quickly succeeded in attracting the majority of customers.

Then consider the JR oil group who learnt that a new chain of hypermarket petrol stations was overtaking its own outlets. The competitor's success was due to a higher standard of service and facilities. The oil group's managers could have discovered this by going to observe these stations for ten minutes. Instead the oil group contacted an agency to carry out more market research.

One of the institute's most striking findings is that the best business strategists see things for themselves. They do not just analyze, but get out into the field with their customers, and gain first-hand experience of their products.

Successful executives base their strategies on reliable data about their clients' requirements.

B.Wrong

C.Doesn't say

A total of 4.6 million digital televisions have been sold, and the sales of HDTV sets have
quadrupled since last year. Consumers have bought HDTVs to play their DVDs and to have clearer pictures and wide screens. Only a small percentage of the people who have purchased HDTVs, however, have actually hooked their TVs up to receive high-definition television digital signals. Perhaps television viewers are having trouble keeping up with the changes in technology. Even the manufacturers of HDTVs, like Mitsubishi, Thomson Multimedia, Sony, and Samsung seem to have a tough time learning how to make their sets work with the various digital TV formats because little standardization has been required or implemented in the industry.

Some of the HDTVs Weigh over 200 lbs., and a variety of retailers offer a delivery service to the buyer's home to help install the heavy sets. This is known as a white-glove service and usually comes with an extra fee. After HDTV purchasers get their sets home and hook them up, they will still need to Work to get the digital signals to their systems. Most of the industry's cable providers do not yet offer high-definition programing, and only about 15% of commercial television stations have switched over to even the lowest improved digital pictures. Worse yet, viewers may need to install antenna before they can even get the digital signals to their new HDTV sets. Another frustration for home-theater seekers is that the current HDTV sets allow owners only to watch high-definition programs, not to record them.

According to the first sentence, the sales of HDTV sets since last year, by the time when this article was written, had reached______.

A.4.6 million

B.9.2 million

C.18.4 million

D.I do not know how many

听力原文: PARIS--French voters chose Nicolas Sarkozy as their new president on Sunday, giving the conservative a mandate for change. His Socialist opponent conceded minutes after polls closed.

With nearly 70 percent of ballots counted, Sarkozy had just over 53 percent of the vote, according to the Interior Ministry.

The results dashed Socialist Segolene Royal's hopes of being elected France's first woman president. The projections were based on vote counts from representative samples of hundreds of polling stations across the country.

"Universal suffrage has spoken. I wish the next president of the Republic the best in accomplishing his mission in the service of all the French people," Royal told supporters in Paris.

Washington can "count on our friendship," Sarkozy told hundreds of cheering supporters, though he added that "friendship means accepting that friends can have different opinions."

Sarkozy's election could help restart the process of finding a way forward on reviving the European Union constitution, which has been held up as Europe awaited the results of the French election.

In remarks just after his election, Sarkozy said: "France is back in Europe."

Nicolas Sarkozy ______.

A.was defeated by his socialist opponent

B.was elected as the new President of France

C.had more than 70 96 of the vote

D.announced after the election that France and the U.S. would share opinions.
