During both light and deep sleep, the muscles in your body are relaxed but capable of movement. As you slip into REM sleep, a very odd thing occurs -- most of the voluntary muscles in your body become paralyzed. Although your brain shows very rapid bursts of neural activity during REM sleep, your body is incapable of moving. REM sleep is accompanied by extensive muscular inhibition.

Help for Exporters to Speak the Language
The new Languages in Export Advisory Scheme has been started to help companies that are keen to export and have fewer than two hundred and fifty employees. It means that they (31) eligible for a grant of up to fifty per cent of the cost of three-and-a-half days' on-site consultancy. The scheme defines ways of meeting the business's language needs (32) relating its product or service to the overseas market.
There are two stages: the first stage, (33) lasts half a day, gives employers understanding of the issues involved in exporting and briefs (34) on local language and export information centres. The second, three-day stage provides expert advice on competing effectively (35) overseas markets. A specialist in exports and language use analyses the firm's language needs and produces a plan (36) developing strategies.
Strategies that might (37) considered include establishing on-line or phone links with an interpreting company, hiring a native of a particular country on a contract basis, advertising for someone (38) fluency in a particular language, and locating a foreign student on placement or at a local business school. Such people might help the boss to (39) up a stand at a business exhibition in a foreign city, as (40) as handle the paperwork and deal with clients. It is hoped that many small businesses all over the world will benefit from this idea in the future.

Meet Your Memory
Memory is something that cannot be seen, touched or weighed. It is thought to be abstract. It is a set of skills rather than an object. Neither is there a single standard for judging a good or poor memory. There are a number of different ways in which a person may have a 'good' memory.
Memory is generally viewed as consisting of three stages; (1) acquisition refers to learning the material; (2) storage refers to keeping the material in the brain until it is needed; and (3) retrieval(提取) refers to getting the material back out when it is needed.
Memory consists of at least two different processes: short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory has a limited capacity and a rapid forgetting rate. Its capacity can be increased by chunking(组成大块), or grouping separate bits of information into larger chunks. Long-term memory has an almost unlimited capacity.
One measure of memory is recall, which requires you to produce information by searching the memory for it. In aided recall, you are given cues(提示) to help you produce the information. In free-recall learning you recall the material in any order; in serial learning you recall it in the order it was presented; and in paired-associate learning you learn pairs of words so that when the first word is given you can recall the second word. A second measure of memory is recognition, in which you do not have to produce the information from memory, but must be able to identify it when it is presented to you. In a third measure of memory, relearning, the difference between how long it took to learn the material the first time and how long it takes to learn it again indicates how much you remember. Relearning is generally a more sensitive measure of memory than is recognition because relearning shows retention(保持) while recognition does not. Recognition is generally a more sensitive measure than recall.

B. How do we measure memory?
C. What are the stages memory consists of?
D. What is the difference between short-term memory and long-term memory?

Scientists have found that there are three distinct stages in a mosquito's assault. Stage one is at fifty feet away, when the insect first smells a man or animal to bite. Stage two is thought to come into operation about twenty-five feet from the target, when the insect becomes guided by the carbon dioxide breathed out by the intended victim. Stage three is when the mosquito is only a matter of inches from its prey: the warmth and moisture given off by the victim is the final clue. The researchers then examined how repellents (驱虫剂) interfere with its three-stage attack. They found repellents act more subtly than by just giving off a nasty smell. A Canadian researcher says that repellents appear to confuse mosquitoes first when it is following the carbon dioxide and second during the find approach, where the warmth and moisture aren't the insect's guide.
Air pervaded by one of the many chemical repellents stops the mosquito reacting to the victim's carbon dioxide, anti the repellent seems to affect the tiny hairs with which the insect senses moisture in the air. The sensors are blocked so that the insect does not know when it is flying through a moist current, or the sensors are made to send the wrong signals.
One positive suggestion from the researchers followed the discovery that mosquitoes on the hunt tend to fly very close to the ground. A dense screen of trees around a village may keep mosquitoes at bay.
The experts also agree that mosquitoes seem to prefer some people to others, but they don't know why.
The phrase "homes in on its target" (Sentence 1, Para. 1) in the context means ______.
A.find its way to the intended victim
B.move towards the prey
C.set off for the target
D.aim at the victim

2. So do his doctors. STI571, a "smart bomb" drug that targets leukemia cells without harming healthy ions, first made headlines last year when researchers announced that white blood counts had returned to normal in 31 out of 31 patients who had taken the pill. Last week scientists were hack reporting new data on just over 1000 patients. In one trial, more than 90 % of 532 people on the drug saw counts return to normal. And under microscopic examination, 28 percent showed no evidence of cancer left in their bone marrow.
3. The drug even helped, although not as dramatically, some patients in the final "blast" phase of the disease, when survival is measured in months. STI571"has ignited the cancer-research field", says Dr Brian Druker, an Oregan Health Sciences University researcher who developed the drug with manufacturer Novartis.
4. CML, diagnosed in 5100 Americans every year, is triggered when two chromosomes swap fragments of genetic information. CML starts with the mistaken swap of genes between two chromosomes. The resulting "Philadelphia chromosome" produces the mutant Bcr-Abl protein. Bcr-Abl transfers a phosphate from the chemical messenger ATP to other proteins. They initiate a flawed signal to white blood cells to replicate incessantly.
5. STI571 returns blood counts back to normal for those patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia(CML) in a "smart bomb way" by targeting the protein that sends the message to make the white blood cells. Bone marrow transplants can work extremely well, but they&39; re applicable only for a minority of patients; otherwise, standard treatment is the injectable drug interferon. Many patients, however, cannot tolerate the adverse effects, which include severe fatigue, weight loss and depression. The new pill works by deactivating the cancer cells&39; growth signal. Side effects- nausea, eye puffiness, muscle aches have been relatively mild so far.
