听力原文:M: Hi, Catherine. Haven't seen you for a long time. How is your vocation?

W: Terrific ! I went to Washington D. C. to visit my cousin. I saw the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House.

M: What a pity is that I've never been there. What do you like best?

W: No doubt the White House. It's been the official home of the American presidents since 1800.

M: I didn't know the history of it. Is it really as nice as everyone says it is?

W: It's a two - story building built of stones. But it is simple and dignified. It was named the White House after the British burned it in the war of 1812.

M: I remember now. The president then was James Madison. And his wife Dolly ran out of the burning building carrying the portrait of George Washington.

W: That's right, it's hanging in the East Room now.

M: How big is the White House?

W: There are one hundred thirty - two rooms inside it and covers eighteen acres of land outside. It has to be painted every four years.

M: How much are the visitors allowed to visit?

W: Only six rooms are open to the public. It's a popular, and there are always too many people waiting for their turns.

A.1800.

Among the minds powers is one that comes of itself to many children and artists. It need n
ot be lost, to the end of his day, by anyone who has ever had it. This is the power of taking delight in a thing, rather than in anything, everything, not as a means to some other end, but just because it is what it is, as the lover dotes on whatever may be traits of the beloved object. A child in the full health of his mind will put his hand flat on the summer turf, feel it and give a little shiver of private glee at the elastic firmness of the globe. He is not thinking how it will do for some game or to feed sheep upon. That would be the way of the wooer whose mind runs on his mistresss money. The childs is sheer affection, the true ecstatic sense of the things inherent characteristics. No matter what the things may be, no matter what they are good or bad for, there they are, each with a thrilling unique look and feel of its own, like a face; the iron astringently cool under its paint, the painted wood familiarly warmer, the cold crumbling enchantingly down in the hands, with its little dry smell of the sun and of hot nettles; each common thing a personality marked by delicious differences.

听力原文: Hello, I'll be your tour guide here at the art museum so I'd like to welcome you
to this month's exhibit of native American pottery. First I'm going to tell you something about the way this pottery was created. Pottery was made all over ancient North America by many different groups of people. One of the earliest of these ancient American cultures was the Hohokam people. They lived in what is now Arizona from about 300 BC to 1500 AD. And it's their pottery that you will be looking at today. All of the pottery was made from clay. Some objects were for everyday use, like containers for food and water: pots for cooking and mugs, bowls and ladles for drinking and eating. You will also see finger rings and animal-shaped incense burners which we believe were probably used in special rituals. The Hohokam formed their pottery vessels from coils of clay. They shaped them with special tools to create very thin sides on the vessels. Afterwards they painted the pottery with red designs. Actually many of the pieces here have designs right on them that show how the pottery was used. Now I hope you'1l enjoy the beauty and the uniqueness of the Hohokam pottery and that it will give you some interesting insights about the people who created it.

What does the speaker mainly discuss?

A.How the museum preserves Native American artifacts?

B.The rituals of the Hohokam people.

C.Methods used by the Hohokam for creating pottery.

D.Artistic designs of Native American pottery.

How to Design Kitchen Well

Over the years economic, social and technological factors have influenced the design of kitchens. Since it is often used simultaneously by both family members as well as guests, the kitchen requires not only a glamorous look but a practical one. Also, the design elements must meet the needs of the modern family.

Environmental concerns have had an enormous impact on kitchen design. This concern includes recycling of household materials, as well as energy efficient appliances and the purity of both water and air. Research shows that up to 85 percent of the population is concerned about what might be in their drinking water. They are also often dissatisfied with the taste and odor of what comes out of their tap. This is why it's important to consider adding a water filter system.

The character of today's kitchen is very different from the way it was thirty years ago. There's more sophistication in food preparation, and more technological help with cooking and clean up.

When choosing cabinets, first consider the style. Use the architectural style. of your house as a guide. Because cabinets are a big investment, it is best to choose quality. Popular styles in kitchen cabinets are framed panel doors with raised or recessed panels of wood, cabinet fronts with glass panes, or simple slab doors in a rich painted or laminated finish. Cabinet pulls, handles and knobs are offered in a myriad of designs and finishes. Treat hardware as jewelry and don't be afraid to mix and match styles.

Because many of today's kitchens consist of two or more cooks sharing in the meal preparation, there is a need for more counter space, cooktops and sinks. Although lifestyles are changing, the primary function of the kitchen as an area for preparing food has remained unchanged. The sink remains one of the most used areas in the kitchen as well as an important decorative statement.

Appliance technology is moving at a very fast pace. Choosing what type of appliances as well as how many will depend on several factors such as how often and how much you cook and the size of your kitchen.

Don't limit yourself to one of each kind of appliance. You can have a refrigerator in one place and a freezer in a separate area or two sets of cooktops, one on the counter next to the wall oven and one on an island. You can even have two dishwashers if size and budget require and permit—think of it as saving time in the long run.

A well-designed kitchen should bemodern, beautiful and practical at the same time.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Not mentioned

Native American Pottery

There are several American Indian groups in the Southwest that still make beautiful pottery.

Some of this pottery may be sold at fairly high prices. But the makers consider their work as more than a commercial enterprise. By using methods handed downfor generations, the potters express their pride in their cultural inheritance (遗产) .

Some of the most interesting pottery is made by the Pueblo Indians. There are 21 individual pueblos in Arizona and New Mexico. Several are famous for their craftsmanship. To make a pot, these potters use a clay base and add long thin coils of clay toit in a spiral pattern. When they have reached the size they want, they use an implement such as a rock or shell to smooth the surfaces of the pot.

How a pot is decorated and fired depends on the traditions of the group making it. Traditional pottery produced by the Acoma, who have lived for centuries on a high mesa in NewMexico, is first painted with a clay slip. The resulting pots: which are prizedfor their delicacy and strength, may be left white. They may also be painted with black and white patterns or with a combination of black, orange, and brown.

Very distinctive (忒别的,有特色的) black pottery comes from the Sail Ildefonso and Santa Clara pueblos. The black color is the result of carbon being released from the animal manure (粪肥) in which the pot is fired. Some artisans hand -rub this ware to a shiny gloss. Others cut patterns into it: resulting in a part shiny: part fiat surface. Potters at Sail lldefonso make many types of wares. Potters at Santa Clara are especially known for wedding jars-jars with two necks connected by a handle.

Other groups such as the Hopi and the Cochiti also make pottery. Each group uses distinctive methods and produces distinctive .forms and designs.
