Passage Two(题干) Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. It’s time to re

evaluate how women handle conflict at work. Being overworked or over-committed at home and on the job will not get you where you want to be in life. It will only slow you down and hinder your career goals. Did you know women are more likely than men to feel exhausted? Nearly twice as many women than men ages 18-44 reported feeling “very tired” or “exhausted”, according to a recent study. This may not be surprising given that this is the age range when women have children. It's also the age range when many women are trying to balance careers and home. One reason women may feel exhausted is that they have a hard time saying "no." Women want to be able todo it all volunteer for school parties or cook delicious meals-and so their answer to any request is often “Yes, I can.” Women struggle to say “no” in the workplace for similar reasons, including the desire to be liked by their colleagues. Unfortunately, this inability to say "no" may be hurting women's heath as well as their career. At the workplace, men use conflict as a way to position themselves, while women often avoid conflict or strive to be the peacemaker, because they don't want to be viewed as aggressive or disruptive at work. For example, there’s a problem that needs to be addressed immediately, resulting in a dispute over should be the one to fix it. Men are more likely to face that dispute from the perspective of what benefits them most, whereas women may approach the same dispute from the perspective of what's the easiest and quickest way to resolve the problem-even if that means doing the boring work themselves. This difference in handling conflict could be the deciding factor on who gets promoted to a leadership position and who does not. Leaders have to be able to delegate and manage resources wisely – including staff expertise. Shouldering more of the workload may not earn you that promotion. Instead, it may highlight your inability to delegate effectively. What does the author say is the problem with women?A.They are often unclear about the career goals to reach.

Questions 23-28

•Look at the article below about psychology in business and the questions.

•For each question (23-28) that follows, choose the correct answer.

•Mark one letter (A, B or C ) on you Answer Sheet.

Psychology in Business

Nowadays it is often not enough to be an expert in your own field of business, It helps to apply a little psychology to your business dealings. Some psychological study shows that all have different perceptions, which affect our expectations and attitudes in life in general and in our business dealings. Our attitudes and perceptions of other people affect our relationships with them.

Perceptions can often be more important than reality. When taking part in a business meeting or negotiation, it can be useful to think about how you see yourself in the business relationship. Some people perceive themselves as being in the stronger position, others consider themselves as a weaker. This immediately creates a win or lose situation. If people put themselves and their opposite number somewhere between the two positions, they are more likely to work together to find common interests and to end up with a win situation in which both parties achieve something. This outcome not only leaves people feeling satisfied but also contributes towards a successful, long-term relationship. In most business dealings, it is important to work on relationships and the establishment of rapport. This includes thinking about common interests, rather than conflicting positions.

It is useful, therefore, in a discussion to consider your opposite number's approach and to consider the best way of dealing with that person. If you're dealing with a skeptical person who does not like to take risks, you will need to build up his trust and enable him to have confidence in you. If you are dealing with various people of different professional backgrounds, it may help to consider varying your approach or presentation so that it is more relevant and interesting to the particular person with whom you are dealing. For example, people with a financial background often respond well to graphic input and a linear approach. So if you can adapt your approach to your customer or business colleague, he or she is more likely to identify with you and therefore cooperate with you.

According to the passage, our attitudes and perceptions of other people

A.have nothing to do with business dealings.

B.exert some influence on our relationships with them.

C.change greatly when we fail to reach an agreement in a business dealing.

Passage Two:Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.A breakthrough (突破) in the provision of energy from the sun for the European Economic Community (EEC) could be brought forward by up to two decades, if a modest increase could be provided in the EEC’s research effort in this field, according to the senior EEC scientists engaged in experiments in solar energy at EEC’s scientific laboratories at Ispra, near Milan.

The senior West German scientist in charge of the Community’s solar energy programme, Mr. Joachim Gretz, told journalists that at present levels of research spending it was most unlikely that solar energy would provide as much as three per cent of the Community’s energy requirements even after the year 2000. But he said that with a modest increase in the present< sums, devoted by the EEC to this work it was possible that the breakthrough could be achieved by the end of the next decade.

Mr. Gretz calculates that if solar energy only provided three per cent of the EEC’s needs, this could still produce a saving of about a billion pounds in the present bill for imported energy each year. And he believes that with the possibility of utilizing more advanced technology in this field it might be possible to satisfy a much bigger share of the Community’s future energy needs.

At present the EEC spends about $2.6 millions a year on solar research at Ispra, one of the EEC’s official joint research centres, and another $3 millions a year in indirect research with universities and other independent bodies.

Passage 1

Since early times, people have been fascinated with the idea of life existing somewhere else besides earth. Until recently, scientists believe that life on other planets was just a hopeful dream. But now they are beginning to locate places where life could form. In 1997, they saw evidence of planets near other stars like the sun. But scientists now think that life could be even nearer in our own solar system. One place scientists are studying very closely is Europa, a moon of Jupiter. Space probes have provided evidence that Europa has a large ocean under its surface. The probes have also made scientists think that under its surface Europa has a rocky core giving off volcanic heat. Water and heat from volcanic activity are two basic conditions needed for life to form. A third is certain basic chemicals such as carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Scientists believe there might be such chemicals lying at the bottom of Europa’s ocean. They may have already created life or may be about to. You may wonder if light is also needed for life to form. Until recently, scientists thought that light was essential. But now, places have been found on earth that are in total blackness such as caves several miles beneath the surface. And bacteria, primitive forms of life, have been seen there. So the lack of light in Europa’s sub-surface ocean doesn’t automatically rule out life forming.

Passage Two:Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. As supplier of most of t
he food we eat and of raw materials for many industrial processes, agriculture is clearly an important area of the economy. But the industrial performance of agriculture (the relative efficiency of agricultural production compared to other areas in the economy) is even more important than this. For in nations where the productivity of farmers is low, most of the working population is needed to raise food and few people are available for the production of investment goods or for other activities required for economic growth. Indeed, one of the factors related most closely to the per capita income (人均收入) of a nation is the fraction of its population engaged in farming. In the poorest nations of the world more than half of the population lives on farms. This compares sharply with less than 10 percent in western Europe and less than 4 percent in the United States.

In short, the course of economic development in general depends in a fundamental way on the performance of farmers. This performance, in turn, depends on how agriculture is organized and on the economic environment, or market structure, within which it functions. In the following pages the performance of American agriculture is examined. It is appropriate to begin with a consideration of its market structure.
