Read with Greater Speed

Do you have difficulty reading in class? If so, a special reading program that helps match sounds with letters could speed up your brain.

At least one out of every five elementary school students in the US has trouble learning to read, even when the students are good at other subjects.__________ (46) Researchers from Yale University, US, studied a group of children from New York and Connecticut State. As part of the study, 37 struggling readers received special tutoring.

Every day, instructors worked with them on recognizing how written letters represent units of sound called phonemes (音素) . __________ (47)

By the end of the school year, these children could read faster than before. They also made fewer mistakes, and understood more of what they read than they could earlier in the year.

As part of their study, the researchers used a special machine to take action photos of the students" brains.__________(48) This is the same part of the brain that becomes active when good readers read, This activated brain area appears to include a structure that helps people recognize familiar written words quickly. In lower level readers, this structure remains inactive.

A year later, the brain structure was still working hard in the students who had gone through the special tutoring, and they continued to do well in reading tests. __________ (49) However, some researchers still doubt the study.__________ (50)

根据以下材料,回答题

Science Fiction

(1) Amongst the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles arepublished every year and are read by all kinds of people.

Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been based on science fiction stories.

(2) It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form. of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modem stories.

(3) Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H. G Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages.

(4) Modern science fiction writers don"t write about men from Mars(火星)or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection of the world which we live in now. Because of this, their writing has obvious political undertones (含义) .

(5) In an age where science fact frequently overtakes (超过) science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology.

根据以下材料,回答题

Tales of the Terrible Past

It is not the job of fiction writers to analyze and interpret history. Yet by writing about the past in a vivid and compelling manner, storytellers can bring earlier eras to life and force readers to consider them seriously. Among those taking on the task of recounting history are some black writers who attempt to examine slavery from different points of view.

Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison deals specifically with the legacy of slavery in her book Beloved. The main character in this novel, a former slave called Sethe, lives in Ohio in the years following the Civil War, but she cannot free herself from her horrific memories. Through a series of flashbacks and bitter reminiscences, the reader learns how and why Sethe escaped from the plantation she had lived on; the fate of her husband, who also tried to escape; and finally, what happened to the child called Beloved. Morrison"s scenes of torture and murder are vivid and strongly convey the desperation of the slaves and the cruelty of their owners.

Charles Johnson"s Middle Passage approaches slavery from a different, yet no less violent, vantage point. His main character, Rutherfprd Calhoun, is a ne"er-do-well free black American who stows away on a slave ship bound for Africa to collect its "cargo". Put to work after he is discovered,Calhoun witnesses firsthand the appalling conditions in which the captured Africans are transported.

When they finally rebel and take over the ship, he finds himself in the middle—— and is forced to come to terms with who he is and what his values are.

Neither Beloved nor Middle Passage is an easy read, but both exemplify African American writers" attempts to bring significant historical situations alive for a modem audience.

The Difference between Man and Computer

What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don&39;t yet __________ (51) for? The answer is simple: People read newspaper stories for a reason: to learn more about __________ (52) they are interested in. Computers, on the other hand,don&39;t. In fact, computers don&39;t __________ (53) have interests; there is nothing in particular that they are trying to fred out when they read. However, these physiological and social goals give __________(58) to several intellectual or cognitive goals. 根据以下材料,回答题

Privacy in the 21st Century

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the Websites you"ve visited, or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it"s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission.0 It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen——the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it"s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is: Does that matter? For many Americans, the answer apparently is "no".

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it.

A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is "slipping away, and that bothers me".

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收费站 ) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (优惠劵) .

But privacy does matter——at least sometimes. It"s like health: When you have it you don"t notice it. Only when it"s gone do you wish you"d done more to protect it.

Why does the author list several cases that your information can be accessed without your permission? 查看材料

A.To introduce the topic.

B.To remind the importance of privacy.

C.To inform. what 21 st century is like.

D.To call for the action against the spread of website.

根据下面材料,回答题。

Hints for Reading Practice

1 Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some regular activity. For example, one famous surgeon always spent 15 minutes reading something before he went to sleep each day. Whether he went to bed at 10 p.m. or 2:30 a.m. made no difference.

2 "Speed Reading" courses teach students how to read more quickly. In such courses, teachers often ask students to find out how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this too: look at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and write down the page number you have reached.

3 Obviously, you should not increase your reading speed if you do not understand what you are reading. If you find something you don&39;t understand in the book, or you cannot remember clearly the details of what is said, why not read the chapter again?

4 Take four or five pages of an interesting book you happen to be reading now. Read these pages as fast as you can. Don&39;t worry about whether you understand or not. If you keep doing this"lightning speed" reading for a period of time, you will usually find that your normal speed has increased.

5 Most paragraphs in an article have a topic sentence that expresses the central idea. The opening paragraph often suggests the general direction and content of the article, while paragraphs that follow expand or support the first. The closing paragraph often gives a summary of the most important points of the article.

Paragraph 2 __________ 查看材料

A.The organization of an article

B.Check your reading speed

C.A way to increase your reading speed

D.Check your understanding

E.Read something every day

F.Read extensively
