If there is any single factor that makes success in living, it is the ability to be benefi

ted by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze (分析) defeat and actually learn something from it in his next undertaking (从事的工作). Wrongly taking defeat for failure, you are sure indeed to fail, for it isn't defeat that makes you fail; it is your own refusal to see the guide and encouragement to success in defeat.

Defeats are nothing to be afraid of. They are common incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to get rid of its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success but nothing can cause within us such a strong wish to succeed. If you left a baby grasp a stick and try to pull it away, he will hold it more and moro tightly until his whole weight is hung up. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you make full use of the power which defeat gives; you can compete with it far more than you are able to.

How much does the writer know about success?

A.He knows at least several examples of success.

B.He knows every success in life.

C.He knows every success that has been achieved by man.

D.It is not referred to.

第2题

Thus far, our holiday has been simply a friendly sign of the survival of the love of lette
rs amongst a people too busy to give to letters any more. As such it is precious as the sign of an indestructible instinct. Perhaps the time is already come when it ought to be, and will be, something else, when the sluggard intellect of this continent will look from under its iron lids and fill the postponed expectation of the world with something better than the exertions of mechanical skill. Our day of dependence, our long apprenticeship to the learning of other lands, draws to a close. The millions that around us are rushing into life, cannot always be fed on the mere remains of foreign harvests. Events, actions arise, that must be sung, that will sing themselves. Who can doubt that poetry will revive lead in a new age, as the star in the constellation Harp, which now flames in our zenith, astronomers announce, shall one day be the polestar for a thousand years?

听力原文: I grew up in Scotland. And that was where I first became interested in mu- sic. I've never been outside the country before I joined a rock group. Scot- land has no music industry as such. Everything in terms of the industry goes through London, which makes it quite difficult for Scottish artists to really attract any national attention in the United Kingdom. I think Scottish artists work just by themselves a lot of the time. Edinburgh is a very artistic city. It's sort of known as the artistic center of Scotland and also has quite any effect on the UK scene because it has an arts exhibition every summer and a film week every year. There are a lot of chances at that time for us to attract a huge following. There have always been a lot of popular music groups. The Scots are very friendly and really love to get together. Playing in the bars and cafes is a very common way of reaching the fans. They all sing a- long. There are a lot of great things coming out of Scotland now which is very exciting. It goes in waves. It's becoming quite common for the record companies to come north. And at the moment, I think Scotland is enjoying a sort of rebirth in a sense. With the huge success of Scottish artists over the last ten years, twenty years, they have to rethink. There's just a lot of new development and much more variety now than there was when I was fifteen.

What does the speaker mainly tell us about?

A.Music in Scotland.

B.Art events in the UK.

C.Music industry in London.

听力原文:Publicity is any promotional communication about an organization or its products

听力原文: Publicity is any promotional communication about an organization or its products that is presented by the media but is not paid for by the organization. Publicity usually takes the form. of a news story appearing in a mass medium or an endorsement (认可) provided by an individual informally or in a speech or interview.

There are three channels for gaining publicity. One is to prepare a story (called a news release) and make it known to the media. The intention is for the selected newspapers, television stations, or other media to report the information as news. The second channel is personal communication with a group. A press conference will draw media representatives if they feel the subject or speaker has news value. Company tours and speeches to different groups of people are other forms of individual-to-group communications. The third channel is one-on-one personal communication, often called lobbying (游说). Companies lobby law makers or other powerful people in an attempt to influence their opinions, and also their decisions. In addition, firms will give products to highly visible people in hope that the people will be seen u sing them.

Publicity can help to accomplish any communication objective. It can be used to announce new products, publicize new policies, recognize employees, de scribe research breakthroughs, or report financial performance—if the message is viewed by the media as newsworthy (有新闻价值的) or by the group or individual receivers as interesting or useful. This is what distinguishes publicity from advertising publicity cannot be 'forced' on the audience. This is also the source of its power. The credibility (可信度) level of publicity typically is much higher than advertising, If we tell you our product is great, you may well be skeptical (怀疑的). But if an independent, objective third party says our product is great, you are more likely to believe it.

—You will hear a talk presented by a reporter. This talk is about various kinds of problems occurring during the east-west cooperation upon vehicles and machinery on the third market.

—For each question 23—30 mark one letter for the correct answer..

—After you have listened once, replay the recording.

A.a news release

B.lobbying

C.a press conference

Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used--what a culture produces. Ex
amining a culture's tools and technology can tell us about the group's history and way of life. Similarly, research into the material culture of music can help us to understand the music culture. The most vivid body of material culture in it, of course, is musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art. Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a th6usand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra.

Sheet music or printed music, too, is material culture. Scholars once defined folk music cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America. Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs. Besides, the ability to read music notation has a far-reaching effect on music and, when it becomes widespread, on the music culture as a whole.

One more important part of music's material culture should be singled out. the influence of the electronic media--radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the "information revolution", a twentieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nineteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modem nations; they have affected music cultures all over the globe.

Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance because ______.

A.it helps produce new cultural tools and technology

B.it can reflect the development of the nation

C.it helps understand the nation's past and present

D.it earl demonstrate the nation's civilization
