ds of young people. This influence, known as peer pressure,is quite common among children. Why are children so easily affected by what their peers do,think,or say? Most of us,children included, feel a strong need to be liked by others. We seek acceptance and friendship. In order to gain them,we act like our friends, and listen to their advice, whether or not it is helpful. Some of us even begin to think like our friends, sometimes at the expense of our own beliefs and values. An example that comes to mind is the young person who gets involved with drugs because his peer group is experimenting with them. Parents may try to exert pressure to keep him away from drugs, but frequently peer pressure is too great. This conflict between being your own person and,at the same time, responding to the pressures of a group remains a problem for young people.

Why We Must Fire Bad Teachers
The relative decline of American education at the elementary- and high-school levels has long been a national embarrassment as well as a threat to the nation&39;s future. Once upon a time, American students tested better than any other students in the world. Now, ranked against European schoolchildren, America does about as well as Lithuania, behind at least 10 other nations.
For much of this time—roughly the last half century—professional educators believed that if they could only find the right pedagogy, the right method of instruction, all would be well. They tried New Math, open classrooms, Whole Language—but nothing seemed to achieve significant or lasting improvements.
Yet in recent years researchers have discovered something that may seem obvious, but for many reasons was overlooked or denied. What really makes a difference, what matters more than the class size or the textbook, the teaching method or the technology, or even the curriculum, is the quality of the teacher. Much of the ability to teach is innate—an ability to inspire young minds as well as control unruly classrooms that some people instinctively possess (and some people definitely do not). Teaching can be taught, to some degree, but not the way many graduate schools of education do it, with a lot of insipid or marginally relevant theorizing and pedagogy. In any case the research shows that within about five years, you can generally tell who is a good teacher and who is not.

听力原文: Crime is a serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is [29] juvenile delinquency—that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years, juvenile delinquency has been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crime, stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons.
These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in need. Young people often dislike and resent the adult world. [30] They will do things to show that they are rebels. Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like.
There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. [30] In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everybody knows everyone else.
Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something wrong with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow up in. I feel that [31] the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.

A.Crimes committed by young people.
B.Crimes committed by needy people.
C.Influence on young people.
D.Stealing and violence.

根据下列文章,请回答 36~40 题。Valuing Childhood
The value of childhood is easily blurred(模糊)in today’s world.Consider some recent developments:The child-murderers in the Jonesboro,Ark Schoolyard shooting case were convicted and sentenced. Two boys,7 and 8,were charged in the murder of an 11-year-old girl in Chicago.
Children who commit horrible crimes appear to act of their own will.Yet,as legal.proceedings in Jonesboro showed, the one boy who was able to address the court couldn’t begin to explain his acts, though he tried to apologize. There may have been a motive—youthful jealousy and resentment. But a deeper question remains:Why did these boys and others in similar trouble apparently lack any inner, moral restraint?
That question echoes for the accused in Chica90,young as they are. They wanted the girl’s bicycle,a selfish impulse common enough among kids.
Redemption(拯救)is a practical necessity. How can value be restored to young lives distorted by acts of violence? The boys in Jonesboro and in Chicago will be confined in institutions for a relatively short time.Despite horror at what was done, children are not—cannot be—dealt with as adults, not if a people wants to consider itself civilized. That’s why politicians’ cries for adult treatment of youthful criminals ultimately miss the point.
But the moral void(真空)that invites violence has many sources.Family instability contributes. So does economic stress. That void, however, can be filled. The work starts with parents。Who have to ask themselves whether they’re doing enough to give their children a firm sense of right and wrong. Are they really monitoring their activities and their developing processes of thought?
Schools, too, have a role in building character. So do youth organizations. So do law enforcement agencies, which can do more to inform. the young about laws, their meaning, and their observance(遵守).
