A study comparing prices in 150 major cities has found that cities in Western Europe have

become more expensive to live in since the full introduction of the euro currency (货币). The report also noted a fall in living costs in cities where there are economic (经济的) or political problems such as Buenos Aires in Argentina and Harare in Zimbabwe.

The findings are shown in the latest worldwide cost of living study conducted yearly by the Economist Intelligence Unit, a business research organization based in London. The information is meant to help big firms set payments for people working away from their home country. As in last year's study, two Japanese cities, Tokyo and Osaka, were found to be the most expensive places to live. The report also says that cities in the euro zone (欧元区) , have become more expensive relative to other places since the introduction of euro notes and coins. For example, Paris now has the tenth highest costs; it was in fourteenth place a few years ago. Berlin has gone from fiftieth to thirty-first place. Those findings will strengthen the opinion that businesses have exploited disorder over the new currency to push up their prices. But as in past years, the highest costs in Europe are outside the euro zone. London, for example, is the seventh most expensive city in the world to live in. New York, which has the highest prices in America, is in 11th place. The biggest fall in relative costs has taken place in Buenos Aires. That partly shows the fall of the Argentine currency, following the country's inability to pay the money it owes. The cheapest major cities were found to be Tehran in Iran and Harare, capital of Zimbabwe.

What is the text mainly about?

A.The economic development in Europe.

B.The results of a study.

Which Vitamin Boosts Brain Power?

Vitamin E has been touted for its anti-aging and anti-cancer benefits because, as an antioxidant, it counters the destructive action of molecules called free radicals. Now a study has shown vitamin E may also help the memory loss and impaired thinking that occurs in the elderly.

Researchers at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging in Chicago conducted a three-year study involving nearly 3,000 people older than 65 to investigate the cognitive effects of vitamin E in food and supplements.

By comparing the average scores of four different tests of memory and perception, the researchers were able to track change in cognitive function with age. The participants also completed dietary questionnaires periodically, which enabled the researchers to determine their vitamin E intake.

The study found that the higher the intake of total vitamin E, the less change there was in the people's average test scores each year. And those men and women who consumed the most vitamin E had a 36 percent lower rate of decline in their average test scores than those who consumed the least vitamin E. Other antioxidants, such as vitamin A, carotene and vitamin C, had little effect on the results.

Those who took supplements but got little vitamin E from food appeared to have the same protective benefit from the vitamin as those who consumed high amounts of E in their diets, says Martha Clare Morris, an assistant professor at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. Several clinical trials are underway to compare protection from cognitive decline in people taking a supplement or a placebo, she says. In this study, the majority who took a supplement reported taking 400 IU a day.

Vitamin E is

A.very popular among some people.

B.effective in memory enhancement.

C.very helpful to the elderly actions.

D.destructive in aging and cancers.

听力原文: A new federal study shows that adults made little progress in theft reading skills between nineteen ninety-two and two thousand three? Researchers tested nineteen thousand people over the age of sixteen. (29) Those who took part were tested on how well they could read and understand information used in everyday life. The study found that eleven million adults, or five percent, cannot read English. They could not answer even the easiest written questions. Four million of them most likely cannot speak English either. Fifty-six percent of adults can perform. moderate or complex .activities. Moderate can mean finding information in a book. Of that number, thirteen percent can perform. complex tasks like comparing two different newspaper commentaries. Researchers say part of the problem is that many young Americans do not read much for pleasure anymore. Also, there are greater numbers of non-English speaking immigrants. (30) Reading skills can directly affect the ability to earn a living. The best readers were found to earn up to twenty-eight thousand dollars a year more than those who lacked simple reading skills. Adult reading skills were about the same or lower across every level of education. This was true even among people who have completed college. By race and ethnic group, blacks and Asians had the biggest increases in English reading skills. Overall, American adults improved the most in answering questions that involved numbers. (31) The Department of Education says the literacy findings show the need for reforms especially at high school level.

(30)

B.Ability of reading and comprehension.

C.English speaking.

D.Listening ability.
