听力原文: People management skills are the most important skills a manager can develop. What differentiates a leader from a manager is that the leader has acquired not just the technical and strategic skills but the interpersonal skills to make things happen.

No doubt on your way up through the ranks, you have come across managers who are lacking in interpersonal skills, though they may be good at other aspects of their jobs. And you know, their future will be affected greatly by this lack of human skills.

Our program is totally devoted to developing those managerial skills in people on their way to the top. It covers motivating, assessing, rewarding, leading and developing people. Very simple models of interpersonal relationships are used to focus attention on understanding one's own behavior, its impact on others, understanding the goals of others and integrating a group into a winning team.

Professor John Hunt, Program Director, deliberately limits the number of people on this program to guarantee personal attention between tutors and participants. To match the content precisely to your needs, we ask you to do some pre-course work which includes a survey of those who work with you. This data is linked to our own large databank on how effective managers operate. We then work with you to develop your own specific goals as a manager.

(26)

A.Managers who want to strengthen their leadership.

B.Managers who want to improve their strategic and technical skills.

C.Managers who lack managerial skills in general.

D.Managers who lack human management skills.

下列各 Instinctively, the first thing we want to know about a disease is whether it is go
ing to kill us. Twenty-five years ago, tiffs was the only question about AIDS we couJd anwer with any certainty; now, it is the only question we really camaot answer well at all. By now, those of us in the AIDS business long term have cared for thousands of patients. No one with that kind of personal experience can doubt for a moment the deadly potential of H. I. V. or the life-saving capabilities of the drugs developed against it. But there are also now htmdreds of footnotes and exceptions and modifications to those two facts that make the big picture ever murkier (扑朔迷离). We have patients scattered at every possible point: men and women who cruise on their medications with no problems at all, and those who never become stable on them and die of AIDS; those who refuse them until it is too late, and those who never need them at all; those who leave AIDS far behind only to die from lung cancer or breast cancer or liver failure, and those few who are killed by the medications themelves. So, when we welcome a new patient into our world, one whose fated place in this world is still unclear, and that patient asks us, as most do, whether this illness is going to kill him or not, it often takes a bit of mental stammering (口吃 ) before we hazard an answer,Now, a complete rundown of all the news from the front would take hours. The statistics change almost; hourly as new treatments appear. It is all too cold, too mathematical, too scary to dump on the head of a sick, frightened person. So we simplify. "We have good treatments now, we say. "You should do fine. " Once, not so long ago, we were working in another universe. Now we have simply rejoined the carnival (嘉年华) of modern medicine, noisy and encouraging, confusing and contradictory, fueled by the eternal balancing of benefits and risks. You can.win big, and why shouldnt you, with the usual fall-safe combination of luck and money. You have our very best hopes, so step right up: we sell big miracles but, offer no guarantees. What does the author say about AIDS?

A.It is definitely deadly twenty-five years ago.

B.The patients want to know everything about it.

C.We can answer anything about it with certainty now.

D.We could not answer questions about it well before.

minutes in a drug store are five times more likely to make a purchase than those who spend half an hour there?

M: I saw that article, too. But think, if someone runs into a drug store for 10 minutes, he is usually there to make a specific purchase.

W: And someone who spends more time there may be just looking?

M: Exactly. Haven't you ever gone into a store thinking that you'll buy something and then talk yourself out of it?

W: Yes, I have. Especially when I thought I could get it for less elsewhere, or I really didn't need it after all.

M: Exactly, but, if you run in to buy something specific and have very little time, you pick it up, pay for it immediately, and then leave.

W: That's true. Maybe we should learn a lesson from that. Take your time end you'll spend less money.

M: I doubt if that would be true in all stores though. In a department store, for instance, you may see a sweater or some thing you never intend to buy, and buy it because you have time to look around.

Dolphins have the power to make people feel better just by their presence, according to a
leading marine biologist.

"I cannot explain it in scientific terms but, without any doubt, everyone who sees them in the wild is lifted by them," Jonathan Gordon, of Oxford University zoology department, said.

"You only ever see them in the wild if they want you to see them. They are the only wild animal that comes to man of their own free will and that makes you feel privileged. You get a buzz because they are joyful, and you can prove scientifically that they spend a lot of their life playing. '

Professor Gordon works for the International Fund for Animal Welfare and spends months on, the organization's research boat. "If things aren't going well on the boat and you are depressed, the sight of dolphins lifts you and makes you feel better at once. They cannot be doing this on purpose, but I can believe that people who are intensely depressed or suffering from some kind of mental blockage could be eased by swimming among them. "

"I cannot go along with those who claim they have magical powers but even though I am scientifically hardheaded I have to admit they somehow make you feel good."

That view is shared by the authors of Beyond the Blue, a book on the healing power of dolphins. The authors say that when the mind is calm it triggers the release of a chemical also found in the anti-depressant drug Valium.

Jenny Sheridan, of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, said: "Swimming with dolphins will not repair any brain damage. But if the child is suffering from lack of confidence it might help."

Mark Simmonds of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said: "The interaction of dolphin with sick children can be instrumental in recovery. No one can explain why. But the behavior. of these beautiful animals induces awe and pleasure in children."

This passage is mainly about ______.

A.the relationship between dolphins and people

B.the healing power of dolphins

C.dolphins and people's depression

D.animals and treatment of diseases

第10题

阅读理解The question of whether our government should promote science and technology o
r the liberal arts in higher education isn’t an either/or proposition (命题), although the current emphasis on preparing young Americans for STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) -related fields can make it seem that way.

The latest congressional report acknowledges the critical importance of technical training, but also asserts that the study of the humanities (人文科学) and social sciences must remain central components of America’s educational system at all levels. Both areas are critical to producing citizens who can participate effectively in our democratic society, become innovative (创新的) leaders, and benefit from the spiritual enrichment that the reflection on the great ideas of mankind over time provides.

Parents and students who have invested heavily in higher education worry about graduates’ job prospects as technological advances and changes in domestic and global markets transform. professions in ways that reduce wages and cut jobs. Under these circumstances, it’s natural to look for what may appear to be the most “practical” way out of the problem: “Major in a subject designed to get you a job” seems the obvious answer to some, though this ignores the fact that many disciplines in the humanities characterized as “soft” often, in fact, lead to employment and success in the long run. Indeed, according to surveys, employers have expressed a preference for students who have received a broadly-based education that has taught them to write well, think critically, research creatively, and communicate easily.

Moreover, students should be prepared not just for their first job, but for their 4th and 5th jobs, as there’s little reason to doubt that people entering the workforce today will be called upon to play many different roles over the course of their careers. The ones who will do the best in this new environment will be those whose educations have prepared them to be flexible. The ability to draw upon every available tool and insight—picked up from science, arts, and technology—to solve the problems of the future, and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, will be helpful to them and the United States.

56. What does the latest congressional report suggest?

A. STEM-related subjects help students find jobs in the information society.

B. The humanities and STEM subjects should be given equal importance.

C. The liberal arts in higher education help enrich students’ spiritual life.

D. Higher education should be adjusted to the practical needs of society.

57. What is the main concern of students when they choose a major?

A. Their interest in relevant subjects.

B. The academic value of the courses.

C. The quality of education to receive.

D. Their chances of getting a good job.

58. What does the author say about the so-called soft subjects?

A. They benefit students in their future life.

B. They broaden students’ range of interests.

C. They improve students’ communication skills.

D. They are essential to students’ healthy growth.

59. What kind of job applicants do employers look for?

A. Those who have a strong sense of responsibility.

B. Those who are good at solving practical problems.

C. Those who are likely to become innovative leaders.

D. Those who have received a well-rounded education.

60. What advice does the author give to college students?

A. Seize opportunities to tap their potential.

B. Try to take a variety of practical courses.

C. Prepare themselves for different job options.

D. Adopt a flexible approach to solving problems.
