？ Is it just a harmless celebration？ The word "Halloween" actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a change of All Hallows Eve. All Hallows' Day, or All Saint's Day, November 1, is a Catholic day. But in the 5th century BC, summer officially ended on October 31. It was believed that, on that day, the spirits of all those who had died throughout the year would come back in search of living bodies for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the after life. Naturally, the living did not want to be taken away. So on the night of October 31, villagers would put out the fires in their homes, to make them cold and unwanted. They would then dress up in all manners of strange customs and noisily walked around the neighborhood, being as wild as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for living bodies. Some accounts tell of how they would burn someone as sort of a lesson to the spirits.

Each year, on System Administrator Appreciation Day, we pause to recognize many contributions that have made by our system administrators during the year. This year's System Administrator Appreciation Day will be held on December 10 and not December 5 as announced earlier. The Event Planning Committee is looking for your help to make this year's celebration the best yet.

We are looking for ways to increase employee involvement in the event. For instance, would you like to help schedule the event program or bring food？ Would you have time to set up decorations？ Or perhaps you'd be willing to help by wiping off the tables, disposing of garbage, storing leftover food and removing decorations after the event.

An informational session will be held on Thursday, November 24 in room 208. If you would like to volunteer to help out at the 7th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day, please contact Ms. Becky Walls at 504-2961.

We all know April 1st can also be called April fool's Day. But do you know where it came from？ Do you know this day used to be a nation's New Year？

This is the case in France in sixteenth-century, which, when you think about it, may make more sense, for April is the time when spring returns. And the idea of beginning a year with spring would so easily be understood. The celebration for the New Year is pretty much the same as it is today. People hold and join all sorts of parties, singing and dancing into the late night.

Then in 1562, a new calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory for the Christian world. And the New Year began to be celebrated on January first. For any nation, the celebration of New Year is something that can not be replaced by other occasions. And the change of the New Year's date would not be accepted in an easy way. That's also why some people chose not to believe it when hearing the news. So they insist to celebrate New Year on April first, others played tricks on them and called them April fools.

Americans play small tricks on friends and strangers in a similar way on the first of April. One commonly-played trick is pointing down to a friend's shoe and saying, your shoelace is untied. And the examples we mentioned at the beginning of our passage is among the limitless ways for children to play tricks on their classmates, friends and so on. Most April fool jokes are in good fun and not meant to harm anyone. The cleverest April fool joke is the one where everyone laughs, especially the person upon whom the joke is played.
