听力原文: China and India have roughly the same population, but when it comes to mobile phones, there is no comparison between the two. In India, seven years after the launch of mobile-phone services, there are only 10 million users. In China, half that number signs up as new subscribers every month.

Geography and culture explain some of the differences. The concentration of economic activity in China's eastern coastal region gave its mobile operators big economies of scale, allowing lower prices. In China, telephones quickly came to be regarded as fashion items, something that has only recently happened to India.

But the main difference is regulation. India chose a licensing policy that divided the country into 22 regions, each with two licenses to operate mobile networks. Bidding in multiple regions was restricted. This aimed to promote competition, but led to a fragmented market with a baffling array of operators, none of which has economies of scale. Limited spectrum also hurt service quality.

Which is the most appropriate title for the passage?

A.A Comparative Study of the Telecom Industry in China and India

B.Differences on Use of Mobile Phones in China and India

C.Geographical and Cultural Differences between China and India

D.Different Regulations on Mobile Phones in China and India

There are several explanations for why the circle is divided into 360 parts. Probably the
best explanation is connected with the Babylonians(巴比伦人).

Many, many centuries ago, large distances were measured in the Babylonian mile. The Babylonian mile equaled about seven of our miles. Because of its length, the time needed to travel the Babylonian mile became a measure of time. One day was said to be twelve Baby-Ionian time-miles.

About one thousand years before Christ, the Babylonians began keeping records of star movements. They needed a way to record how much time passed between the moment they first saw a star and then observed it again. They used the Babylonian time-mile as their measure of time.

In order to have small units of time, the Babylonians divided their time-mile into thirty parts. The Babylonians believed that each trip around the sky was a circle. One complete trip around the sky, they reasoned, took one day.

You already know that one day was the same as twelve Babylonian time-mile. Since each time-mile was divided into thirty parts, the circular trip around the sky was 12×30, or 360 parts long. That is how there came to be 360 4egrees in a circle.

The purpose of this passage is to explain ______.

A.how the Babylonians measured the time of star movements

B.why the circle is divided into 360 degrees

C.the Babylonian mile and the Babylonian time-mile

D.the Babylonians' ideas about the sky

听力原文: A new study suggests that very young children who watch a lot of television may have attention problems later in school.

Children with attention problems cannot sit still or control their actions. They talk too much, lose things, forget easily and are not able to finish tasks.

The new study tested the idea that television watching by very young children is linked to attention problems by the age of seven. It involved more than 1,300 children. There were two groups of children, aged one and three. Researchers asked the parents how often the children watched television. The parents also described their children's actions at the age of seven using a method that can tell if someone suffers from attention problems.

The children who watched a lot of television at an early age were most likely to have attention problems. Every hour of watching television increased the chances of having attention problems by about ten percent. For example, children who watched three hours a day were thirty percent more likely to have attention problems than those who watched no television.

One of the researchers said there are other reasons why children should not watch television. Earlier studies have linked it with children becoming too fat and too aggressive. Other experts say the new study is important, but more work needs to be done to confirm the findings and better explain the cause and effect.

(30)

A.Attention problems.

B.Participating problems.

C.Communication problems.

D.Speaking problems.

第二篇

The idea of test-tube babies may make you starry-eyed with delight at the wonders of modern medicine or bleary-eyed with considering the moral/legal implications of starting life in a laboratory. But if you've ever been pregnant(怀孕)yourself, one thing is certain: You wonder what it's like to carry a test-tube baby. Are these pregnancies normal? Are the babies normal?

The earliest answers come from Australia, where a group of medical experts at the Queen Victoria Medical Center in Melbourne have taken a look at the continent's first nine seemed to proceed according to plan, but at birth some unusual trends did show up. Seven of the nine babies turned out to be girls. Six of the nine were delivered by Caesarean section(剖腹产术). And one baby, a twin, was born with a serious heart defect and a few days later developed life-threatening abdominal problems.

What does it all mean? Even the doctors don't know for sure, because the numbers are so small. The proportion of girls to boys is high, but until there are many more test-tube babies no one will know whether that's pure coincidence(巧合)or something special. The same thing is true of the single heart defect; it usually shows up in only 15 out of 60,000 births in that part of Australia, but the fact that it occurred in one out of nine test-tube babies does not necessarily mean that they are at special risk. One thing the doctors can explain is the high number of Caesareans.

The Australian researchers report that they are quite encouraged. All the babies are now making nomal progress--even the twin with the birth defects.

The passage imples that the first test-tube babies were born in______.

A. Canada

B. Britain

C. America

D. Australia

Pain is easier to endure if you know you can end it. Speakers at a session on pain at the
British Association's psychology section have new evidence to support this idea for two common experiences of pain: in childbirth and at the dentist's. On the other side of the coin, their inability to control pain may explain why some people with continual pain have psychological problems as well.

Dr. J. Robinson found out about the phenomenon of self-controlled pain almost by accident. He was studying the effects of analgesics used to control pain during childbirth and as part of the experiment made it possible for women having their child to press a button which gave an automatic injection—instead of having all injections made by the doctor. Afterwards these women did not say that they had less pain than other women in childbirth, but they did use considerable less of the drug.

J. Atkins, a dental surgeon, has observed a similar phenomenon. As part of their efforts to make dentistry painless, Atkins and researchers at Aston University in Birmingham offered patients a switch they could flip to turn off the dentist's drill whenever they chose. But, after trying the switch on 50 patients Atkins gave up; none of the patients had ever flipped the switch.

Perhaps the extra endurance was because the Aston team also use other methods to make dentistry painless. Apparently few other dentists are so considerate. The end result, according to the Birmingham survey, is that British people avoid going to the dentist, with the consequence that almost 30% of people in England and Wales have lost all their teeth, and more than seven out of ten have lost at least six teeth. Less than half of the public pay regular visits to the dentist. To find out why, Atkins and psychologist Cumberbatch interviewed a sample of patients attending a dental hospital. The most common reason people gave for not having dental check-ups were fear and pain.

By using a little care and taking time to explain what will happen, Atkins feels, dentists could overcome these fears. There are techniques for giving injections without pain, and a "calm unhurried approach" to drilling can make that painless, too.

Sadly, few dentists seem to take much trouble with their patients. "I am not nervous when I go to the dentist, and I do not have any pronounced sympathy for those who are, " said one dentist. "I tend to take the point of view that they are being unreasonable at my expense."

The passage most possibly comes from______.

A.a medical textbook

B.a psychology textbook

C.a popular magazine

D.a serious magazine
