Non-British, and even some British, must be having difficulty understanding the present di
fferences that have cropped up in London between Queen Elizabeth II and her prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. The important thing to know is that Mrs. Thatcher is prime minister in the government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but has no rank and no authority in a lot of places that are associated with Queen Elizabeth. Thatcher is solely and exclusively British. The Queen is a good many other things besides a British Queen. The Queen must act on Mrs. Thatchers advice in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but she has to act on the advice of other people in other places. And now we have a case where the advice she is getting from some of her ministers in some of those other places is at variance with the wishes of Thatcher. It puts her in a difficult position. Not even all the islands covered by the phrase "British Isles" are under the British Parliament or are even British. For example, the Isle of Man lies in the middle of the Irish Sea and is equidistant, from England. Scotland. Wales, and Ireland. But its political antecedents are Scandinavian. Its citizens call themselves Manxmen. They have their own local legislature. They recognize the Queen as the Lord of the Isle of Man, not as at British Queen.

The video game poses a world a much simpler world than our own. wherein success is very cl
early defined and, for a time. clearly attainable. Through practice, a player can control this world for a while. He can escape from the anxieties of real life into a place where his own actions always count, where he can be a hero. When the game is over. he hash' t lost or been beaten. Is a surfer beaten when he files from a wave?

Most video games call for some semblance of hand-eye coordination, and some hospitals are now using them in rehabilitation programs for brain-damaged patients. It has been found that some patients who were otherwise thought to be unreachable have been "brought out" through their use. Moreover experimental re- search is now being conducted regarding the feasibility of video games as a test for drunken driving. Intoxicants act to slow reaction time and impair coordination -- and nowhere is this kind of impairment more measurable than on the video game play field. Some day a poor showing at "Six-Pack Man" may cost you your license.

Video games for the microcomputer are net restricted to mere "twitch" games, however. Strategy games are at last as popular, and among these are the so-called "fantasy role-playing" adventures. These games allow the player to construct a whole new personality, choosing strengths and weaknesses from a list of possible character traits.

Nowadays, more and more adolescents are crowded in electronic game houses for whole days to experience what they perceive to be excitement. In the due course, they train their abilities in confronting with new situations, and what's more, they learn how to communicate with their targeted rivals, in a novel and friendly way. But there is such a large amount of criticism concerning the electronic games that they are generally seen as a vile ways of discovering hostility and belligerence. And the managers of such businesses are severely criticized by the schools and parents alike. On the other hand, this business seems never fading, but instead it becomes a success in many places, even it is strictly controlled by certain policies.

One might choose, for instance, a character who is extremely dexterous and swift, but these positive traits must be traded off against others, such as strength and endurance. Players have a tendency to become extremely attached to their characters. My preference runs toward brawn as opposed to brain, which probably reflects some compromise between reality and my own desires. I'm also attached to extrasensory powers, which are likewise denied to me in the real world.

According to the article, the video game player can ______.

A.be successful in his life if success is clearly defined

B.control the world of our own for a time

C.forget about the uneasiness of real life for a while

D.never lose the game when he plays a hero

It was the first snow of winter. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess(课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss king, my kindergarten teacher, may still remember this one.

I managed to get into my snow pants, but I struggled with my jacket because it did not fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother. Finally it was time to have Miss King help me with my boots. She said, "By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots."

I handed her my boots, and she managed to get the first one into place and then worked the second one on, too.

I said, "They are on the wrong feet". She struggled to get the boots off and tried again. Then I said, "These aren't my boots, they are my brother's boots and I hate them!" Somehow, she managed to act as though I was not an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. Seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, "Now, where are your gloves?"

I looked into her eyes and said, "I did not want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots."

According to the passage, the little girl got______from her brother.

A.the pants and jacket

B.the jacket and boots

C.the jacket and hat

D.the gloves

听力原文: Culture means the general way of life of a people. This simple definition implies that culture refers to the customs, traditions, social habits, values, beliefs, language, ways of thinking and daily activities of a people. It also includes the history of civilization. In tile broad sense, there are two types of culture, that is, material culture and spiritual culture. Material culture is concrete and observable, while spiritual culture is implicit and abstract.

Because human language is a direct manifestation of culture, learning a second language involves learning a second culture. For the teacher of a second language, he or she should make sure to develop the students' awareness and knowledge of the culture of the target language they are learning. This includes understanding the values of the target culture, acquiring a command of the etiquette of the target culture and understanding the differences between the target culture and the students' own culture. As students progress through a foreign language program, it is expected that they will increase their awareness of the cultural characteristics of the speakers of the language under study. This broadened cultural knowledge may touch on all aspects of culture: the people's way of life as well as the geographic, historical, economic, artistic, and scientific aspects of the target society. We know that each culture has different etiquette patterns. And therefore, in a foreign language course, students should learn the appropriate etiquette patterns expected of the people living in the country where the target language is spoken. Students should also learn how to interpret unfamiliar cultural conventions and how to act appropriately when communicating with the persons of the foreign culture.

(26)

A.Artistic and economic.

B.Concrete and observable.

C.Scientific and historical.

D.Implicit and abstract.
