One of the more discernible trends in the financial-service industry in re cent times has
been the adoption of programs designed to encourage more personalized relationships between an institution's employees and its clients, particularly those clients who are major depositors. The expression most commonly used to describe this type of program is "relationship banking". A good definition is provided in the 1985 book "Marketing Financial Services":

In relationship banking the emphasis is on establishing a long-term multiple-service relationship; on satisfying the totality of the client's financial service needs; and on minimizing the need or desire of clients to splinter their financial business among various institutions.

Implicit within any definition of relationship banking is recognition that the financial-service requirements of one individual or relatively homogeneous group. A successful relationship banking program is, therefore, dependent in a large part on the development of a series of "financial-serviced packages": each designed to meet the needs of identifiable homogeneous groups.

Another dimension of relationship banking is the development of highly personalized relationships between employee and client. In most financial institutions today the client is serviced by any employee who happens to be free at the time, regardless of the nature of the transaction. Personalized relation ships are therefore difficult to establish. In a full relationship banking pro gram, however, the client knows there is one individual within the institution who has intimate knowledge of the client's requirements and preferences regarding complex transactions. Over time, the client develops a high level of confidence in this employee. In short, a personalized relationship evolves between client and employee.

With what subject is the passage mainly concerned?

A.The decline of the financial-service industry.

B.Variety within financial services.

C.A way of making banking more personal.

D.Increasing everyday banking transactions.

In Britain arrangements for inviting and entertaining guests at a wedding are usually the
responsibility of the bride' s family. In most cases it is mainly friends and relations of both families who are invited but when the bride' s father is a businessman of some kind, the wedding reception may pro vide a useful occasion for establishing social connections with clients or customers who has the job of sending out the formal printed invitation cards.

In the case of a church wedding, the vicar (牧师) of each parish in which the bride and bride groom lives is normally informed about a month in advance of the ceremony so that an announcement of the coming wedding can be made in church on each of three Sundays before it takes place. Anyone who may know of an existing marriage of either partner is ordered to give information about it, though this means of avoiding bigamy (重婚) must have been more effective in the days when people move about the world less than they do today. Often up to a hundred or more people attend the religious service and the bride usually wears the traditional long white dress and veil, while her bridesmaids, who are often children, wear long dresses in attractive colors. This may also happen in the case of a civil wedding in a register office but is probably less usual.

The reception which follows may be held in a restaurant, a local hall or, when there are few guests, in the bride' s own home. Refreshments are provided, a special iced wedding-cake is cut (usually to the accompaniment of speeches) and distributed to the guests, toasts are drunk and dancing may follow. At some point in the celebrations, the bride goes off to change into everyday clothes and then leaves the party with her husband to go on their honeymoon, the journey they will make together, often in romantic surroundings abroad.

It is the bride's parents who normally have to ______.

A.make all the arrangements for the wedding

B.provide hospitality for the people attending

C.decide who shall be invited

D.pay all the expenses involved

A Completely Different Product And A New Way Of Doing Business

When James Dyson introduced the DC01 vacuum cleaner in 1993, few people could have guessed that within a few years it would be the biggest selling vacuum cleaner in Britain. With no bag and a number of space age design features, it was unlike any other vacuum cleaner.

Today, the Dyson company employs 1, 050 people at its headquarters in Malmesbury. The company has an annual turnover of &150 million and Dyson vacuum cleaners are sold all around the world. In addition, the company has won many design awards and, most surprising of all, Dyson cleaners are on display in several of the world's leading museums of modem art.

Dyson is not a typical company. For example, everyone who starts work at Dyson makes a vacuum cleaner on their first day. This way, all the staff know what the company produces and how they pro duce it.

Designers and engineers work together to design and test theft ideas, unlike other companies where they are separate departments. Dyson also believes in direct communication--no one sends memos in the office, they go and speak to each other. And no one wears suits. James Dyson doesn't insist on this, but he does believe that wearing a suit stops people from thinking creatively. Judging from the success of Dyson. fewer companies will wear suits in future !

The standardized educational or psychological tests, which are widely used to aid in selec
ting, assigning or promoting students, employees and military personnel, have been the target of recent attacks in books, magazines, the daily press, and even in Congress. The target is wrong, for, in attacking the tests, critics divert attention from the fault that lies with ill-in formed or incompetent users. The tests themselves are merely specified condition. Whether the results will be valuable, meaningless, or even misleading depends partly upon the tool itself but largely upon the user.

All informed predictions of future performance are based upon some knowledge of relevant past performance. How well the predictions will be validated by later performance depends up on the amount, reliability and appropriateness of the information used and on the skill and wisdom with which it is interpreted. Anyone who keeps careful score knows that the information available is always incomplete and that the predictions are always subject to error.

Standardized tests should be considered in this context: they provide a quick, objective method of getting some kind of information about what a person has learned, the skills he has developed, or the kind of person he is. The information so obtained has, qualitatively, the same advantages and shortcomings as other kinds of information~ Whether to use tests; other kinds of information, or both in a particular situation depends, therefore, upon the empirical evidence concerning comparative validity and upon such factors as cost and availability.

In general, the tests work most effectively when the traits or qualities to be measured can be most precisely defined(for example, ability to do well in a particular course of training pro gram)and least effectively when what is to be measured of predicted cannot be well defined, for example, personality or creativity. Properly used, they provide a rapid means of getting comparable information about many people~ Sometimes they identify students whose high potential has not been previously recognized.

In this passage, the author is primarily concerned with ______.

A.the necessity of standardized tests

B.the validity of standardized tests

C.the method used in interpreting the results of standardized tests

D.the theoretical grounds of standardized tests
