听力原文: Pushing China's foreign exchange reform. ahead by another step, the central bank on Friday carried out its first currency swap deals with local banks. It hopes that this could help bring more flexibility to the market.
The People's Bank of China confirmed that it was carrying out its first foreign exchange swap deal on Friday, but would not give more details. A Beijing-based trader for a major state-owned bank said that the central bank offered one-year currency swaps worth $ 6 billion at 7.85 Chinese yuan per dollar.
In spot dealings, the yuan closed at 8.08 to the dollar on Thursday. Analysts said that it wasn't clear exactly what system the central bank was using in its swaps transactions, but said it could be selling dollars and buying yuan on the spot market, and a year later could reverse the deal at the set rate.
That would have the effect of removing yuan from the money market. At the same time, the central bank could use the swap rate to signal its expectations about how fast it expects the yuan's value to rise, they said.
Tile swap deal didn't seem to have any immediate effect on the spot market.
Late Thursday, China's State Administration for Foreign Exchange announced it would also introduce a new currency trading system allowing bank market members to trade directly with each other. It also invited qualified members to apply to become market makers for yuan spot trading.
A market maker agrees to act as either a buyer or seller in a financial transaction when no other party can be found. Currently, the central bank is China's key market maker in U.S. dollar trading due to tight restrictions on for eign exchange dealings, though regulators earlier announced they were considering letting other banks become market makers.

听力原文: World oil demand is slowing down, led by weaker economic growth in the U.S. and China, the International Energy Agency said Wednesday. While the agency didn't say high oil prices are damping demand, weaker economic growth is projected in the world's leading economies, as the U.S. and China lose steam from earlier strength this year and Japan's rebound is cast in doubt as investors worry about inflationary pressures caused by the high cost of energy.
For the first time in more than half a year of constant upward revisions, the IEA, advisor to the world's biggest economies, didn't change its forecasts for how much more oil the world will need.
But it did increase its estimated overall demand by 750,000 barrels a day, reflecting changes to historical data stretching back 10 years. That left world oil demand in 2004 at 82.2 million b/d, up 2.53 million b/d on the year. Growth will moderate in 2005 to 2.2%, or 1.8 million b/d, at 84 million b/d.
A global slowdown is beginning to affect oil demand, according to IEA figures.
Government efforts to cool down China's overheating economy will cut oil demand growth more than half from 24.6% in the second quarter to 9% in the third, the IEA said. But uncertainty remains about the future in China where restrictions on trucking and economic growth could push down demand, while extra refining capacity could boost it.
Why do people doubt about the pickup of Japan's economy?
A.Low domestic demand.
B.High energy cost.
C.Deflation.
D.Weaker economic growth in the U.S. and China.

There are many moving stories about Project Hope. Here is one of them.
On June 10, 1992, a car stopped at the front gate of the China Youth Development Foundation(基金会)(CYDF) in Houyuasnensy Lane, Beijing. Two men came out of the car, donated(捐)3,000 yuan and did not want to write down their names. When staff workers insisted that they say who they were, they at last wrote down "a veteran(老)Communist Party member". Four months later, the two came again to donate a further 2,000 yuan on behalf of the same person.
After many inquiries(调查)they finally found out that this veteran party member was the late Deng Xiaoping. The CYDF decided to send his two contributions to aid children unable to go to a primary school in Baise, Guangxi where Deng led the famous Baise Uprising(起义)in December 1926.
Later, 25 pupils from the school jointly wrote to Deng, saying that they were excited and felt closer to him though he lived far away in Beijing.
In 1994, four of the 25 pupils were invited to Beijing and reported one by one their study results in the Great Hall of the People: Zhou Biaoliang scored 91 in Chinese and 98 in mathematics; Huang Chengwu, scored 86 and 94; Huang Huabai 81 and 91 and Deng Hongxia 85 and 88.
Zhou was born in Shiren Village of Pigguo County. In 1992, she suffered greatly and couldn't go to school when her house was burned down and her father was injured in a traffic accident. She left the school with tears in her eyes. When she was cutting grass to feed the pigs she heard from her teacher that she could continue her schooling the next day and simply could not begin to accept that she was being supported by the respected Deng Xiaoping. She felt herself the luckiest girl in the world.
After graduating from primary school, Zhou Biaoliang with excellent results entered a secondary school. At the school she was elected as a "three-good" student. She said that is the best way to repay the late Deng Xiaoping.

A.Two men came to the CYDF twice and donated 5,000 yuan to this organization for its development.
