Recycling Resources (资源再生)Increased population increases the need for natural resource

Recycling Resources (资源再生)

Increased population increases the need for natural resources and also increases waste products.Making a new useful product out of a waste product decreases our need for natural resources. Recycling means using something over again after it has been used once.

Have you ever seen a piece of recycled paper? About one third of all the paper products made each year are made from waste paper. For example, recycled paper is usually used to make paper sacks. 'Recycling paper, such as newspapers, reduces the number of trees that must be cut each year to make new paper.

Each person produces a lot of solid waste. In the United States, the average is eight kilograms of waste per person each day. Most of the waste is garbage and rubbish.Finding places to dispose of solid waste is a major problem.

In many cities solid.wastes are collected and the rubbish is burned in incinerator plants (焚化厂).Air pollution control devices are used to prevent pollution Heat produced in the burning may be used to generate electricity.Waste that is not burned is taken to a dump. One kind of dump for the disposal of solid wastes is a sanitary(卫生的)landfill(垃圾填埋场). This method involves burying the waste and bulldozing (用推土机推) soil over them. Parks, baseball fields, airports, and other developments may be buiIt on completely filled landfills,

Recycling solid wastes decreases our need for methods of disposal. The metal in broken cars can be recycled and made into new steel.Worn out rubber tires can be turned into new ones and used again.Plastics and other rubber products can be recycled.Metal cans and glass bottles can also be recycled.Increased recycling can help meet the increased demand for natural resources.

By recycling resources, people imitate nature.Elements important to life are naturally recycled.Nothing lasts forever.Wooddecays, iron rusts (生锈), and concrete is worn away by wind and rain. All natural resources used by people eventually go back into the air, water, and earth.

第 41 题 What is the main cause of the increased waste, according to the passage?

A.Expansion of cities.

Deconstruction Rather Than Demolition by Daniel Ross Arlington(May 8)- As mentioned in last weeks article, at the end of a buildings life, demolition generates large amounts of materials that can be reused or recycled, principally wood, concrete and other types of masonry, and drywall. Rather than demolish an entire building, consider "deconstructing" all or part of the structure. Deconstruction is the orderly dismantling building components for reusing or recycling. Last weeks deconstruction of two buildings to make way for a convention center expansion is being cited as an example of how far a community can go to recycle construction materials. The city plans to use recycled construction materials to help build the convention centers 150,000-square-meter new wing. Half the wing will be taken up by a new library hall, shopping areas and restaurants. Robin Baily, construction manager for the city of Arlington, said that last weeks controlled deconstruction of the vacant office buildings at 253 and 326 Martin Street collectively produced more than 180 tons of debris, and was transported from the downtown site to regional recycling centers run by Youngearth Recycling, Inc. The remaining non-recyclable materials were safely disposed of in a landfill. Yoon-sook Huh, president of the Citizens Coalition for Waste Reduction, which lobbied the city council to adopt the new policy, said the efficient use of resources is a fundamental tenet of green building construction. This means reducing, reusing, and recycling most if not all materials that remain after a construction or renovation project. Through careful planning, reusing and recycling of construction materials can actually be more economical than disposal.

What does the article discuss?

A.A proposal to build two new office buildings

B.Rising costs of construction materials

C.The impact of a city"s recycling program

D.The demolition of a library

The Issue of Package

Maybe everyone has such an experience that you have to unwrap several layers of packaging when you enjoy a piece of candy. But this overuse of wrapping is not confined to luxuries. It is becoming increasingly difficult to buy anything that is not done up in beautiful wrapping.

The package itself is of no interest to the shopper, who usually throws it away immediately. So why is it done? Some of it, like the cellophane on meat, is necessary, but most of the rest is simply competitive selling. This is absurd. Packaging is using up scarce energy and resources and messing up the environment.

Recycling is already happening with milk bottles which are returned to the dairies, washed out,and refilled. But both glass and paper are being threatened by the growing use of plastic. More dairies are experimenting with plastic bottles.

The trouble with plastic is that it does not rot. Some environmentalists argue that the only solution to the problem of ever increasing plastic containers is to do away with plastic altogether in the shops, a suggestion unacceptable to many manufacturers who say there is no alternative to their handy plastic packs.

It is evident that more research is needed into the recovery and reuse of various materials and into the cost of collecting and recycling containers as opposed to producing new ones. Unnecessary packaging, intended to be used just once, and make things look better so more people will buy them, is clearly becoming increasingly absurd. But it is not so much a question of doing away with packaging as using it sensibly. What is needed now is a more advanced approach to using scarce resources for what is, after all, a relatively unimportant function.

"This overuse of wrapping is not confined to luxuries. " (Line 2, Paragraph 1) means __________. 查看材料

B.more wrapping is used for luxuries than for ordinary products

C.too much wrapping is used for both luxury and ordinary products

"Recycle newspapers and save a tree. Collect bottles and calls so they can be reused in the manufacturing of new products."

Protecting our delicate environment seems to be on the agenda of politicians, government leaders, and citizens in many parts of the world to show support for mother nature. The concept of green consumerism has gained impetus more and more over the last decade, and the public feels moved to join in and help. However, three essential keys needed to power this movement include a more informed public, the development of improved technology, and a greater demand for recycled materials.

Let's use paper as an example. The first step is to raise public awareness about the recycling process, to explain the kinds of materials that can be recycled, and provide ways on how to properly dispose of them. Local governments should educate the public on how to properly sort reusable materials from those, like waxed paper, carbon paper, plastic material such as fast food wrappers, that can't be recycled very easily. Then, a system of collecting these sorted materials needs to be established. Give the public information they can grasp, and then you will increase your chances of gaining followers.

Second, technological progress has been made on many fronts, but governmental agencies need to step up their support for companies involved in recycling by providing tax incentives, lowcost loans, or even grants to upgrade equipment and to encourage further research.

The final key is to increase demand for the growing surplus of resources waiting to be recycled. This problem has appeared in various regions of the world where the technology to process the used materials lags far behind the amount being collected for recycling.

Recycling is a crucial link protecting our planet. The three keys mentioned are important ways to achieve this end.

(30)

A.Important Keys to Recycling Paper.

B.Technological Advances Improve Recycling.

C.Steps to Improve Recycling.

D.A Greater Demand for Improving Recycling.

听力原文:W: Why are you packing all these old bottles and newspapers together? Will you se
ll them?

M: Of course not. I'm just going over to the recycling center this afternoon. Sometimes volunteers come by these apartments and collect waste paper. Sometimes I take the old bottles and papers there myself.

W: How do people deal with these old things?

M: Manufacturers use waste paper for things like paper bags, towels, napkins and boxes.

W: My god! Am I wiping my mouth on the towels from the dustbin?

M: You can't say so. Used material must be treated carefully and scientifically before reusing. For instance, an old newspaper can be recycled by de-inking and pulping.

W: Does the recycled paper look the same as the paper made from virgin wood pulp?

M: Well, inevitably, owing to its dingy color, art books and high quality magazine paper wouldn't use recycled paper. However, I suppose it's suitable for things like greeting cards, calendars and writing paper. After all, who cares about the drab color if waste paper can help to preserve forests?

W: Yes, forests may be one of the most valuable natural resources in the world. Regretfully, some people in my country haven't realized the importance of the environment protection.

M: In America, a few years ago people were really enthusiastic about reusing waste paper. But with the decreasing demand recently, interest has been waning. I think the government should do something to make people resume their enthusiasm in recycled paper.

W: Absolutely right. In addition, manufacturers need to find new commercial uses for recycled paper. Perhaps we can read comic books made from it just like in Japan.

Sustainable Communities

According to the World Wildlife Fund, people are currently using resources 25 percent faster than they can be replaced. If we continue down this course, we will need a second planet by the year 2050. Sustainable communities attempt to change that course by drastically altering how citizens interact with the environment.

Alternatively known as green communities or ecovillages (生态村), sustainable communities vary in their approaches to sustainable living, or a way of life that meets the population's basic needs in ways that can be continued indefinitely for future generations. Some communities focus solely on enriching the environment, while others also aim to improve social and economic conditions as well.

Characteristics of Sustainable Living Communities

Sustainable communities generally strive to minimize waste, reduce consumption and preserve open space. Ideally, they don't use resources faster than they can be replenished, and they don't produce waste faster than it can be assimilated back into the environment. Granted, some communities are more radical than others--living entirely off the grid and eschewing the use of government:--printed money--but the basic principles are similar.

Designing the neighborhood to encourage walking or bicycling is one way sustainable communities put these first two principles into practice. Less driving means less gas and emissions. Many ecovillages also incorporate work space into homes or encourage telecommuting. They also might zone part of the development for commercial use, essentially making the community a serf-contained environment where residents don't even have to leave for shopping or entertainment. This design sometimes is called a live- work-play lifestyle.

Using green building techniques is another staple of sustainable communities. Here are a few examples:

- Architects design buildings to take advantage of the sun's lighting and heating capabilities.

- They install energy-efficient appliances.

- They try to use local sources of materials as much as possible to cut back on the environmental costs of transport.

- They build with durable, non-toxic materials that have either been recycled or sustainably harvested.

You might see straw bale (草捆) houses, which essentially use bales of straw as the structural building blocks; cob houses, which are a mix of straw, clay and sand or earthbag homes, which are exactly what they sound like, homes made out of bags of dirt.

Along with green building techniques, sustainable communities rely on green gardening methods. They landscape with native, drought-tolerant plants and raise them organically to reduce water and keep pesticides and herbicides out of the environment.

Many communities also set aside a significant portion of their land as open space. Serenbe, for example, reserves 80 percent of its 900 acres for green space, that is, 720 acres of rolling hills, woods and streams free of development, quite a contrast to the concrete-laden urban sprawl of Atlanta just 32 miles away.

Another way sustainable communities reduce their ecological footprint is by capturing and recycling their wastes, often creating their own contained natural cycles. Instead of treating normally perceived waste products such as rainwater and sewage as pollution to be gotten rid of, residents mm th

There is no question that some "greenwashing" is going on in the corporate world. Byernwer
k, a Bavarian utility, began selling "Aqua Power" last year when Germany began to let customers choose their electricity supplier. Bayernwerk markets Aqua Power as 100 percent green, renewable, hydroelectric energy. But any customer who signs up gets power from the same mix of sources as before: hydro, gas, coal and nuclear. Nothing changes except some accounting, and there is no net benefit to the environment. There is a benefit, though, to Bayernwerk, which charges more for Aqua Power and has been swamped with orders for it.

Greenwashing takes many forms. "Companies often advertise themselves as environmentally friendly even though they might have some pretty hideous environment records, "says Jill Johnson of the group Earth Day 2002. California's PG&E, the utility that settled out of court after the real Erin Breckovich accused it of polluting groundwater, runs pro-environmental ads. But PG&E is due in court in November on charges of polluting wells in a second California town. "PG&E has a very good environmental track record, "says spokesman Greg Pruett, citing recycling and waste reduction. Weyerhaeuser, the timber company, cuts old-growth trees in Canada but trumpets the 100 million tree seedlings it will plant this year.

Overall, the greening of corporate America is real and has not been as hard to achieve as some environmental activists imagined. That is especially true for greenhouse gases and climate change, the focus of Earth Day 2000. "Now there is more recognition by companies that there may be an economic advantage to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases," says Paul Portney, president of the think tank Resources for the Future. More and more companies are changing the way they heat and light their buildings and design their factories to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as their energy bills. (Energy-efficiency upgrades can save a company roughly $ 1 per square foot of office or factory space every year.) The reductions often exceed those called for in the 1997 international agreement on greenhouse warming called Kyoto Treaty, whose goal of reducing greenhouse emissions 7 percent from their 2000 levels is deemed so threatening to the economy by oil, coal and chemical companies that the White House does not dare to submit to the Senate for ratification.

The "Aqua Power", sold by the Germany utility Bayernwerk, is ______.

A.green energy

B.less expensive

C.ordinary electricity

D.not popular

As the 2lst century begins, a number of leaders in politics, education, and other professi
ons believe that the United States must adopt some new values to go along with the old traditional ones. What new values should Americans adopt? This is a very difficult question to answer. Certainly, a greater value should be placed on the conservation of natural resources; Americans should learn to use less and waste less. But conservation has never been a strong value to Americans, who have believed that their country offered an endless, abundant supply of natural resources.

Recently, progress has been made--more and more Americans are recycling their paper, cans, bottles, and other goods--but old wasteful habits die hard. Furthermore, the need to protect the environment may conflict with the need for jobs, as in the Northwest, where conservationists battle lumber companies that want to cut down ancient redwood trees. A belief in the value of conservation is still compared with other American values; it can become stronger only as Americans see the need for it more clearly.

In addition, Americans may need to place a strong value on cooperation on a national scale to achieve important national objectives. The American idea of the national good has never been based on national cooperation but rather on the freedom of the individual, maintaining those conditions that provide the greatest freedom and prosperity for the individual. It is far more difficult for Americans to accept shared sacrifice for the common good and well-being of the entire country. For example, although the majority of Americans believe that it is extremely important to balance the national budget and reduce the deficit, they do not want to see cuts in government programs that benefit them personally.

The American value of competition also hinders the development of a spirit of national cooperation. Competition sometimes encourages feelings of suspicion rather than the mutual trust that is necessary for successful national cooperation. Although Americans often cooperate successfully on the local level--in neighborhood groups and churches, for example—they become suspicious when the national government becomes involved. For example, on the national level, they may see themselves as part of an interest group that is competing with other interest groups for government funds. A request by the national government for shared sacrifice may be seen as coercive and destructive rather than voluntary and constructive. However, the demands of the 21st century may compel Americans to place a greater value on national cooperation to solve problems that affect them all, directly and indirectly.

The best title of this passage could be ______.

A.Which is Better, New Value or Old Value

B.Conservation vs. Need for Jobs

C.The Need for New National Values

D.Cooperation and Competition
