The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be【B11】by the case history of the【B12】twins, Peter and John. Peter was【B14】by parents of low intelligence in an【B15】community with poor educational opportunities. John,【B16】, was educated in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. This environmental【B17】continued until the twins were【B18】their late teens, when they were given tests to【B19】their intelligence. 听力原文: A critical factor that plays a part in people's susceptibility to colds is age. The University of the Michigan School of Public Health has done a study that revealed some general rules for the public. It says that infants are the most cold-ridden group. On an average, infants will catch more than six colds during their early years. Besides, boys have more colds than girls when they are under the age of three. When they grow older than three years old, it is easier for girls to catch cold than the boys. Girls might catch three colds, while boys catch two on average.

Generally speaking, the incidents of colds continue to decline while people are growing older. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections. This is because people in this age group are most likely to have young babies. Adults who delay having children until their 30s and 40s experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more limited space than those occupied by rich people, and crowding will increase the possibility of cold infections.

第一篇

Medical bills in the United States have risen violently since 1960's and steps need to be taken to reverse this trend or the average American will not be able to afford medical care. The major factor in increasing the cost of medical care has been the dramatic increase in the cost of hospital services. The rise in the cost of hospitalization can be only partly blamed on inflation (通货膨胀)since hospital bills in the last two decades have risen at a considerably higher rate than inflation.

Another factor cited by doctors as a major cause for the increase in the cost of medical care is malpractice(治疗错误). Increasingly large awards for malpractice have caused doctors to increase their rates to cover the higher malpractice insurance. Because of the large malpractice awards, doctors are also prescribing more conservative and more extensive and therefore more costly treatment for patients as a defense against malpractice claims. Whatever the causes of the wild increases in the cost of medical care are, the government needs to take strong action before it is too late for Americans.

The passage is mainly about ______.

A. the increasing cost of malpractice insurance

B. factors causing the increase in U. S. medical bills

C. steps for Americans to take to obtain medical care

D. the dramatic medical profession

High Blood Pressure

There is evidence that the usual variety of high blood pressure is,in part,a familial disease.Since families have similar genes as well as similar environment, familial diseases could be due to shared genetic influences,to shared environmental factors,or to both. For some years, the role of one environmental factor commonly shared by families, namely dietary salt, has been studied at Brook—haven National Laboratory. These studies suggest that chronic excess salt ingestion(摄取)can lead to high blood pressure in man and animals. Some individuals, however, and some rats consume large amounts of salt without developing high blood pressure. No matter how strictly all environmental factors were controlled in these experiments, some salt-fed animals never develop hypertension(高血压)whereas a few rapidly developed very severe hypertensions followed by early death. These marked variations were interpreted to result from differences in genetic constitution.

By mating in successive generations only those animals that failed to develop hypertension from salt ingestion,a resistant strain(the R strain)has been evolved in which consumPtion of large quantities of salt fails to influence the blood pressure significantly. In contrast,by mating only animals that quickly develop hypertension from salt,a sensitive strain(the S strain)has also been developed.

The availability of these two strains permits investigations not therefore possible. They provide a plausible laboratory model on which to investigate some clinical aspects of the human developing methods by which genetic susceptibility(敏感性)of human beings to high blood pressure can be defined without waiting for its appearance.

The main idea of this passage is__________. 查看材料

A.Genetic constitution,or hereditary factor is all important factor that may underlie hypertension

B.Excessive use of salt may cause high blood pressure

C.Shared environmental factors may lead to familial disease

D.There are two different kinds of strains in animals which cause their different reactions to excess salt ingestion

The Corruption of Power

The rights we are granted by the Constitution to guarantee the basic freedoms of speech, religion, petition, press, and assembly. By exercising these rights, freedom can be discovered, and can also be costly. The corruption for power is a popular factor in the decay of American rights. For example, if the underdog wishes to attack the wrong doings of leaders, the underdog's accusations may be twisted and undermine the real issue. The power to distort often gives the assistance to higher authority, and often leads to victory. Therefore people often lose rights that they have originally been given. Given the fact that out of all Americans today, two percent are millionaires, and fifty percent of this number happen to be Jewish people; this might reinforce the belief that the persecution lead the Jewish to become a strong entity that would not be defeated. America's leaders seem oblivious to the corruption that they are leading to, by denying the rights of one to support the powerful. "Money is the root of all evil, and a man needs roots."

Of all American people, Jewish millionaires are

A.1%.

B.2%.

C.5%.

D.50%.

听力原文: After two decades of growing student enrollments and economic prosperity, busine
ss schools in the United States have started to face harder times. Only Harvard's MBA School showed a substantial increase in enrollment in the 1993 school year. Both Princeton and Stanford have seen decreases in their enrollments. Since 1990, the number of people receiving Masters in Business Administration MBA degrees, has dropped about 3 percent to 75, 000, and the trend of lower enrollment rates is expected to continue.

There are two factors causing this decrease in students seeking an MBA degree. The first one is that many graduates of four-year colleges are finding that an MBA degree is not a guarantee for a plush job on Wall Street, or in other financial districts of major American cities. Many of the entry-level management jobs are going to students graduating with Master of Arts degrees in English and the humanities as well as those holding MBA degrees. Students have asked the question," Is an MBA degree really what I need to be best prepared for getting a good job?" The second major factor has been the cutting of American payrolls and the lower number of entry-level jobs being offered. Business needs are changing, and MBA schools are struggling to meet the new demands.

What is the main idea of the talk?

A.Schools offering MBA courses.

B.Economic prosperity brought by MBA graduates.

C.Changes in enrollment for MBA schools.

D.How to obtain an MBA degree.
