It was not yet eleven o’clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger. W
hile the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pockets for money, the boatman lifted a lantern. By the newly risen moon, he took a very careful look at the stranger's appearance. He was a young man of eighteen years with brown, curly hair, well-shaped features. His bright, cheerful eyes were nature's gifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment (装饰. 听力原文: Cambridge must be one of the best-known towns in the world, and can be found on most tourists' lists of places to visit. The main reason for its fame is its universities which started during the 13th century and grew steadily. Until today there are more than twenty colleges.

The oldest college is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1284, and the most recent is Robinson College, which was opened in 1977. The most famous is probably King's College, because of its magnificent church.

The university was exclusively for men until 1871 when the first women's college was opened. Another was opened two years later and a third in 1954. In the 1960s, most colleges opened their doors to both men and women. Almost all the colleges are now mixed, but it will be many years before there are equal numbers of both sexes.

What is the main reason why Cambridge is one of the best-known towns in the world?

A.Because it is a favorite place for tourists.

B.Because it has a famous university.

C.Because the town was started in the 13th century.

D.Because the university has twenty well-known colleges.

听力原文: Isn't it amazing how small the world has become in recent years? Of course, the
physical size hasn't changed, but the world seems much smaller than it did a few hundred years ago. That's because of our improved ability to visit faraway places, contact one another, and instantly learn what goes on in other places.

A thousand years ago, people rarely left their town or village. Trips to nearby areas were made on foot or horseback, and there were fears of wild animals, bandits, and bad weather. Trips abroad were almost impossible for all but the richest and most powerful people. Communications were also limited, as it took weeks or even months to send letters long distances.

About 150 years ago, train travel made trips hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away possible. Also, with the invention of the telegraph, messages could be sent long distances at a low price. Many barriers of distance and communication were starting to fall.

In the 20th century, inventions such as the automobile, airplane, telephone, and television changed people's lives greatly. People could travel across a city in a few minutes or across the world in a few hours. Televisions allowed people to witness important events while they took place. Computers and the Internet let people send letters instantly, access huge amounts of information, and make new friends around the world.

As local communities continue to link together to form. the global community, there will surely be many new tools and methods that make the world seem even smaller.

Which of the following statements is NOT true about life 150 years ago?

A.Travelling long distances were easier than before.

B.Messages could be sent quickly.

C.Crossing the ocean could be done safely.

D.The fear of wild animals became a big barrier of communication.

Musicals, which developed out of the British comedy at the end of the 19th century, are st
age productions that use popular-style. songs and dialogs. They put together music and play, as well as song and dance.

In Europe, the US and Japan, the musical is a popular form. of performing art. Musicals generally attract more people than do plays or classical music concerts. However, most Chinese people are still not familiar with this form. of art.

In 1987, the American musical The Music Man, a heart-warming story about a traveling sales- man who tries to trick a small town into buying his musical instruments, was introduced in China. In 1990, Sunrise was put on stage in Shanghai. It is considered the first Chinese musical in China's history. But neither of these achieved as great a success as had been expected. This makes it clear that in China, musicals are still at their earliest stage of development.

By comparison, developed in many Western countries for years, musicals have achieved great success on Broadway (in New York City) as well as in London's West End, both of which are famous for their musicals. The musical has become an important form. of art in these countries.

What do we know about musicals in many Western countries?

A.They are not taken as a form. of art.

B.They are highly enjoyed and welcomed.

C.They are used to teach performing art.

D.They are not as popular as concerts.

听力原文: In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each farm family lives on its own fields, often beyond the sight of any neighbors. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning, American farmers stay on their land throughout the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on buses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas, there are small schools serving a few farm families, and the children walk to school.

Of course life keeps changing for everyone, including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, and television sets. And of course there are modern machines for farming. All of these have changed farm life.

For many years, however, farming in America was often a lonely way of living. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new methods, and to trust their own ideas instead of following older ways.

(30)

A.They live in bigger houses.

B.They live in villages or in towns.

C.Each family lives on its own fields.

D.They use modern machines in farming.

听力原文: In the 1930s, archaeologists discovered spear points in the New Mexico town of Clovis, dated from around 13,000 years ago. The individuals who made them have since become known as the "Clovis people" and are believed by many to have been the first people to enter North America.

The "Clovis first" theory proposes that around 14,000 years ago people traveled across a land bridge that existed between Siberia and Alaska. Once in North America, their journey took them through a corridor that opened up between the ice sheets in Western Canada making them the first to be able to enter the interlor of the continent. It's an elegant and almost biblical explanation; but more recent fossil finds question the theory. Some researchers believe the first people entered North America much earlier—perhaps as long as 20,000-30,000 years ago.

In more recent years, the Pacific coast has been seen as an alternative route of entry-possibly at an earlier date than the Clovis. There is little direct evidence to support this, but fossil evidence from the islands of south-east Alaska tells us that this region, or part of it, was free of ice and may have been a refuge for animals throughout the ice age.

If animals such as bears and foxes lived here then why not people? Fossilized human remains have been found on Alaska's Prince of Wales Island and much further south on the Channel Islands off California. These are thought to be as old as some of the Clovis .finds and it may only be a matter of time before older remains are discovered.

If people did travel down the coasts between islands, they must have used boats. Although the coastal route still lacks a lot of hard evidence, the relatively recent discovery of a stone tool off the coast of British Columbia has added support to the idea.

Why are "Clovis people" believed to first enter North America?

A.Some fossils have been discovered.

B.They were found to have lived in the area known as the refuge during the ice age.

C.Some spear points were discovered.

D.It is in accordance with the biblical explanation.
