How Should You Build up Your VocabularyExactly what do you do during a normal day? How do

How Should You Build up Your Vocabulary

Exactly what do you do during a normal day? How do you spend your time? Paul T. Rankin very much wanted an answer to that question. To get it, he asked sixty-eight individuals to keep an accurate, detailed record of what they did every minute of their waking hours. When he consolidated (巩固) his findings, he discovered that the average individual spent 70 percent of his waking time doing one thing only--communication. That meant either reading, writing, speaking or listening.

Put that evidence alongside of the research findings uncovered by the Human Engineering Laboratories. In exploring aptitudes and careers involving, among other things, data from 30,000 vocabulary tests given yearly, they discovered that big incomes and big vocabularies go together. Vocabulary, more than any other factor yet known, predicts financial success.

And it all fits. Each word you add to your vocabulary makes you a better reader, writer, speaker and listener. Furthermore, linguistic scientists are quick to point out that we actually think with words. If that is so, new words make us better thinkers as well as communicators. No wonder more words are likely to mean more money. What better reason for beginning right now to extend your vocabulary?

Take reading. What exactly do you read? Common sense says you read words. Research confirms that fact. "Vocabulary in context" contributes 39 percent to comprehension. That' s more than any other factor isolated and studied--even more than intelligence. And "word discrimination" contributes more to speed of reading than any other factor--28 percent. In short, your efforts to improve vocabulary will pay off in both comprehension and speed.

Suppose, as you' re reading along, you lumtebs across a strange word. Did you find your self stopping for a closer look at lumtebs? Pardon the spelling slip. That' s actually the word stumble (偶然发现). The letter just got mixed around. Obviously you now know that strange words do slow you down--or even stop you completely. Furthermore, strange words hinder (妨碍) comprehension. Which is easier to understand, "eschew garrulity" or "avoiding talking too much"?

What you need is a vital ,dynamic approach to vocabulary building. Hybrid (混合种) corn combines the best qualities of several varieties to ensure maximum productivity. A hybrid approach to vocabulary should, in the same way, ensure maximum results. That' s why you should use the CPD formula.

Through Context

When students in a college class were asked what should be done when they came across an unknown word in their reading, 84 percent said, "Look it up in file dictionary." If you do, however, you short-circuit the very mental processes needed to make your efforts most productive.

But there' s another reason. Suppose someone asks you what the word fast means. You answer, "speedy or swift". But does it mean that in such contexts as "fast color", "fast woman", or "fast friend"? And if a horse is fast, is it securely tied or galloping (飞驰) at top speed? It could be either. It all depends. On the dictionary? No, on context--on how the word is actually used. After all, there are over twenty different meanings for fast in the dictionary. But the dictionary doesn' t tell you which meaning is intended. That' s why it makes such good sense to begin with context.

Through Word Parts

Now for the next step. Often unfamiliar words contain one or more parts, which, if recognized, provide definite help with meaning. Suppose you read that someone "had a predilection for reading mysteries". The context certainly isn' t too helpful. But do you see a prefix, suffix or root that you know? Well, there' s the familiar prefix pre-, meaning "before'. Look back at th

听力原文: When you have a dog it is necessary to care for it carefully. In return you will
be loved by your dog.

The most important part of dog-care is to keep the dog clean. Not only does the dog have to be kept clean, his environment should also be clean. The bed he sleeps in can be made with anything like a rug or a dog mattress.

Proper feeding is also important. A dog should be fed in the same place and on a regular schedule. During feeding time it should be quiet, ff your dog refuses to eat, don't force him. Remove his food and don't feed him again until his next feeding.

Food should never be left before a dog for over thirty minutes under any circumstances, If he does not eat over a long period of time, your dog should be taken to a vet. Another important thing is to keep fresh water available to the dog during hot weather.

One important thing is exercise for dogs. Vigorous exercise helps to build strength and keeps dogs healthy. A regular walk at a fixed time of the day is enough for smaller dogs. Large dogs, though, require a run in an open field.

How long should food be left before a dog?

A.As long as possible,

B.At least 30 minutes.

C.All day.

D.No more than 30 minutes.

听力原文: Bad as well as good moods spice life and build character. The key is balance.

We often have little control over when we are swept by emotion. But we can hove some say in how long that emotion will last. Psychologist Dianne Tice of Case Western Reserve University asked more than 400 men and women about their strategies for escaping bad moods. Her research, along with that of other psychologists, provides valuable information on how to change a bad mood.

Of all the moods that people want to escape, rage seems to be the hardest to deal with. When someone in another car cuts you off on the highway, your thought may be, That jerk ! He could have hit me ! I can't let him get away with that! The more you stew, the angrier you get. Such is the stuff of hypertension and reckless driving.

What should you do to relieve rage? One myth is that ventilating will make you feel better. In fact, researchers have found that's one of the worst strategies. Outbursts of rage pump up the brain's arousal system, leaving you much angrier, not less.

A more effective technique is "reframing," which means consciously reinterpreting a situation in a more positive light. In the case of the driver who cuts you off, you might tell yourself: Maybe he had some emergency. This is one of the most potent ways, Tice found, to put anger to rest.

Going off alone to cool down is also an effective way to defuse anger, especially if you can not think clearly. Tice found that a large proportion of men cool down by going for a drive—a finding that inspired her to drive more defensively. A safer alternative is exercise, such as taking a long walk. Whatever you do, don't waste time pursuing your train of angry thoughts.

Your aim should be to distract yourself.

The techniques of reframing and distraction can alleviate depression and anxiety as well as anger. Add to them such relaxation techniques as deep breathing and meditation and you have a store of weapons against bad moods. "Praying, "Dianne Tice also says, "works for all moods."

The young man asked, "How, Mr. Addison, can you invent so many things and achieve your fame?"

The scientist said, "It seems that you have been thinking of becoming famous every day."

The young man nodded, "Yes. I have been dreaming of being a person as notable as you. Every minute I am thinking of how to become reputable. I don' t know when I can achieve my fame."

Addison told him, "Don't worry, young man. If you want to be a famous man this way, you will have to wait until you die!"

"Why should I?" the young man was puzzled.

Addison said, "What you dream is actually a high building. You never think of how to build it with bricks. Thus the building will never come into reality. However, your story can serve as a mirror. 听力原文:F: Hi David. Can you give us the background on your book and why you wanted to wr
ite it?

M: I've always been fascinated with the power of online content and web sites to tell an organization's story to the market. My background is with online news companies. I worked at Knight-Ridder and NewsEdge, by the way. There had been many books written on ' how to create a web site' but all were focused on either the technology aspects, or the design aspects, for instance, logos, colors and so on. I wanted to write about the content of sites-the editorial aspects.

F: For our audience, can you talk about how they can make their web site more ' action' oriented for their visitors?

M: First, it is critical to know your goals for the site and to build a site around those goals. If you want to sell a product, identify who the target market is and why they should buy it. Next, one of the most important aspects is to write for your buyers. Most sites are egotistical and they fail to deliver what buyers want. If you are selling a product, don't organize the site around 'prod uct A','product B', and so on. If people don't know your business, they won't care about your products. Instead, figure out how to organize into pages for buyers. That might be based on their problems.

F: You reveal in your book the true importance of delivering great content, are there tips for making certain that any site delivers this?

M: The best content brands your business as a leader. Don't sell too hard. Instead, show you are an organization to do business with. For example, if you run a catering business, you might be tempted to create a site about your "product" and include various menus and pricing and so on. Instead, how about offering content that helps people who might hire a caterer with their problems? For example, you might create a set of landing pages such as ' Ten tips for a great cocktail party' or 'Indoors or out—how to entertain in the summertime'. These sorts of things are great for search engine marketing and they brand your catering business as smart and someone who it would be a pleasure to do business with.

F: Your book also makes the insightful point about providing content about the way a company does business and how it sends a signal that says, ' We have nothing to hide', why is this so important today in doing business?

M: I always tell people to put as much content as possible on the site. Some organizations resist because they don't want to ' give away secrets to the competition'. Guess what? You competitors already know about your company. But your potential customers do not.

F: How does providing good and friendly content on your Web site level the playing field for small businesses in regard to larger organizations?

M: Every organization is equal on the Web. That is especially true of brands that are not famous already. If I find two surfboard dealers online and I need a surfboard, I will buy from the one that looks the best on the Web-best content, easiest to reach, and so on. I don't care if it is one person in a garage in Hawaii.

F: Finally, can you briefly cover three of the best practices from web marketers that our audience can apply?

M: 1. Know your goals 2. Build content for your buyers 3. Understand your sales consideration process and build content for people at each stage.

听力原文: Your professor has asked me to talk to you today about the topic that should be of real concern to civil engineers: the erosion of the US beaches. Let me start with some statistics, Did you know that 90% of the coast in this country is eroding, on the gulf of Mexico for instance, erosion averages 4 to 5 feet per year? Over the past 20 years, there has been an increase in building along the coast, even though geologists and environmentalists have been warning communities about problems like erosion. Someway, communities have tried to protect their buildings and roads and to build seawalls. However, geologists have found that such stabilizing structures actually speed up the destruction of the beaches. These beaches with seawalls, called stabilized beaches, are much narrower than beaches without them. You may wonder how seawalls speed up beach loss. The explanation is simple. If the flow of the beaches is gentle, the water energy is lessened as it washes up along the shore. It is reduced even more that returns to the sea so it doesn't carry back much sand. On the other hand, when the water hits the nearly vertical face of the seawall, it goes straight back to the sea with the full force of its energy and it carries back a great deal of sand. Because of the real risk of losing beaches, many geologists support a ban on all types of stabilizing construction on shorelines.
